« Kyle Lohse Signs Extension | Main | Will D'Backs Let Randy Johnson Leave? »
According to the AP, the Marlins released righty Sergio Mitre today. He would've been a non-tender candidate later in the year anyway. Mitre had Tommy John surgery in July, so he'll miss at least half of the '09 season. Mitre, 27, can be a decent back-rotation starter when healthy given his strong groundball rate.

Can somebody please explain to me what Non-Tender means?

Basically, teams are required to tender a contract with a player before the Dec 12 deadline. If they're on the 40man roster and aren't given a contract by that date, they're non-tendered, and become free agents.

Mitre was the prized prospect in the Pierre deal, but now the scrub everyone forgot. Tough break, but they got Nolasco and Pinto anyway. White Sox: JUMP ON IT!

I hope he goes to the Mets and blows a lot of games for them.

At least they can afford him

Looks like maybe another guy the Red Sox can throw in Triple-A for a season and help resurrect...or maybe the Tigers will continue their reclamation projects like they did w/ Garcia

I bet he goes to a team like the Nats that can actually try him out in the majors. Too much to fight with in the Sox organization.

I'm hoping the Cubs pick him back up. I've always liked his sinker, and I think at the very least, he would be a good option for a long man.

ballerwhiteboy, I'm not so sure that Mitre was the prize of that trade, I think everyone was higher on both Nolasco and Pinto at the time, at least thought they had higher upsides. Mitre to me was more of a throw-in in that deal.
And yeah, I wouldn't mind seeing the Cubs pick him back up either, in fact every team should be interested in a guy who's had major league experience with a little bit of success. He's got talent but hasn't really blossomed. Given his injury it could take a few years but he could eventually turn in to a pretty good back of the rotation starter while not being too expensive. Certainly worth a shot.

mitre was the marlins ace 2 years ago, during the first half. and during that time he had little run support so his record is misleading. but during the 2nd half he totally tailed off. so at best he a back-of-rotation guy who servicable.
