« Minaya To Receive Extension | Main | Burnett, Jays Talking Extension? »
9:18pm: The Steinbrenners want to know Cashman's decision by next week, according to SI.com's Jon Heyman. If he agrees to stay, the two sides will then hammer out a contract.
9:06am: The Yankees officially want GM Brian Cashman back, according to Kat O'Brien of Newsday. Hal Steinbrenner told O'Brien, and Cashman confirmed the team's desire. The two parties have yet to discuss dollars on a possible contract. Cashman prefers to wait until after the season.
O'Brien's sources say Cashman is torn on this decision, in part due to concerns for his family. Hal played down his brother's "advisory board" talk; that may not be an issue.

I for one hope Cashman does return. Losing Cashman could very well mean losing the youth movement, and if any Yankee fan cares about building another dynasty team, then abandoning the youth movement would be a terrible mistake.

I can't understand why Cashman would want to stay with all the other opportunities out there that don't include the meddling Steinbrenners. If he stays, there will be tremendous pressure to "do something" to alleviate the humiliation that the Yankees have sufffered from having the highest payroll in baseball and not being able to "buy" a world series. That pressure will either result in tremendous stress on Cashman as he tries to stick to the plan or some awful decisions with long term consequences (e.g., C.C. signed to a 7 year $160 mil. contract).
Posted by: MickS | September 23, 2008 at 09:34 AM
Mick, I don't really think this season was all that "humiliating". With all the injuries that they've had combined with the fact that we know going into 2008 that it would be a semi-rebuilding year in the toughest division in baseball, I'd say they did alright with what they had.
Cashman is a smart guy. He knows about his opportunities elsewhere, but he also knows that his youth movement is going to pay dividends soon. As the GM that was the architect of this movement, I would certainly want to stay and finish what I started.
Posted by: jlemoine | September 23, 2008 at 10:10 AM
jlemoine, I'd say that having a "semi-rebuilding year" with a $200 mil. + payroll is pretty humiliating in its own right.
Posted by: MickS | September 23, 2008 at 10:25 AM
I'm fairly confident he'll stay. He won't get the same or near the same budget freedom or compensation elsewhere.
Posted by: Scottsdale01 | September 23, 2008 at 10:25 AM
Fair point, Mick, but when you have a bunch of highly paid vets, they're going to get old at some point. Every team built like that needs to take a year eventually to groom the new guys when the old guys get...well, old.
The Red Sox missed the playoffs in 2006, but won the World Series in 2007. I don't see anything humiliating in missing the playoffs for the first time in 13 years.

That list makes sense.
Git r done.

I will also disagree that this was NOT a rebuilding year. The Yanks handed out huge contracts to aging players (Rivera and Posada). Not to mention inking the biggest contract ever with A-Rod. This team was designed to win now.
And I get that your players age and you need to transition. BUT what the heck is your $200m payroll for, if not to buy some protection against regression. We aren't talking about the A's here. The Yanks, with their resources, have absolutely NO excuse when it comes to missing the playoffs.
And while they have dealt with injuries so have every other club. Off the top of my head I can think of about 5 clubs that suffered more devestating and less predictable injuries.
It's very simple - the Yankees had a flawed plan to start the season. They had a payroll around $200m but instead of buying insurance in the starting rotation, they relied on unproven kids. Banking on Kennedy and Hughes was foolish. They also should have realized (like everyone outside the Bronx did) that Melky had no business being a starting CF. Finally, handing a very old (for catchers that is) Posada a new 3 year deal and then being shocked when he goes down with injury is laughable. Didn't anyone perform a little due diligence and research what happens to catchers when they land on the wrong side of 35?
The beauty of this is that we aren't judging the Yankees in hindsight. Go back and read the posts about the Posada deal. Read about the Johan deal (where most non-Yankee fans pointed out the folly of passing on Johan and opting to put all their trust into Hughes/Kennedy). Even check out the Lohse signing. How many people suggested that $5 for 1 year of Lohse might be a good investment?
So, here we stand at the end of 08. The Youth Movement of 08 will now end up in history. The Yanks will revert to their old methods of buying up every FA available. The world will continue to be jealous and envious and ultimately laugh when the Yankees fail.

As far as I know the Yankees aren't at liberty to take players from other teams while the other team controls that player. So, Peavy, Oswalt and Guerrero likely won't be Yankees next year, unless you know something no one else knows.....

I'll agree with most of bjsguess. The Yankees banking on Hughes and Kennedy holding down 2 starter positions was doomed to fail. Perhaps one might have done well but two? No.
There will be no rebuilding year. Not with missing the playoffs for the first time in more than 10 years, new Yankee Stadium and these years with no championships.
With the cash coming off the books and big fish like Tex and CC, the Yankees will go on a spending frenzy.
This team wins the championship in '09
C- Posada
1B - Tex
2B - Cano
3B - Rodriguez
SS - Jeter
LF - Matsui/Nady
CF - Damon
RF - Abreu
DH - Giambi* (one year deal)
OF - Melky to the bench as the 4th outfielder position where he belongs.
SP - Sabathia
SP - Wang
SP - ??? Lefty ???
SP - Mussina (two year deal)
SP - Hughes
Joba back to setting up 'Mo. And dear god, find a reliable lefty. As for the 3rd starter, I would have said Pettitte but he has just stunk it up lately. Kennedy to the 'pen as a long reliever, despite his belief that he should have won the Cy Young.

Oh and I think with a healthy Wang (hahah!), Posada and even half-productive Hughes/Kennedy and this team barely makes the playoffs.
I'm upset this team misses the playoffs during the last season at Yankees Stadium, but this team needed a wake-up call after these past mediocre seasons.

InvalidUserID-
First of all, I agree with re-signing Bobby Abreu and leaving Cano at 2nd. Second, will Brett Gardner be on the roster?? Because he is a great defender, has excellent speed and is starting to hit. I say the Yankees either have Brett Gardner in CF or Johnny Damon. What do you think?
But besides that, it looks like a realistic Play-off team.
Posted by: YankeeFan4life | September 23, 2008 at 03:56 PM
YankeeFan4Life-
I think Gardner will be on the roster but as a backup. I believe Johnny still has few more productive seasons left and it would be good for Gardner to grow without the pressure. He has good speed but aside from the great hit off Papelbon, I've seen him look pretty lost with the bat.
I think Cano should get at least one more year to establish himself as a premier 2nd baseman and to work on shaking his image being "lazy". Hitting all season, not just after the break, and hustling will improve his rep as well as his trade value if the Yankees go that way.
As someone before me mentioned, with a $200+ million payroll and the makeup of this team, this team is built to win NOW. There is no better time to go all out than the first year of the new stadium which would help fans forget about this forgetable season.

Cashman will take the contract that hank gives him, wipe his ass with it, and hand it back to him. He's being polite to not piss off the NY population but he's been gone since last off-season when hank took away his ability to completely run the team, and started trying to make moves of his own, shopping off cashman's work. Cashman will easily find another job with a team that has a little more faith in his ability.

RU KIDDING ME! This guy sucks ass. So he traded for Nady that was great. But look at all the busts he has done. Signing Jaret Wright, Carl Pavano, Octavio Dotel, Kyle Farnsworth, Tony Womack, the list goes on and on. Why dont the Yanks place the guy who was the GM before Cashamn, who made the Yankees great and Cashman took all the credit.
Posted by: yankfan1 | September 23, 2008 at 06:56 PM
The guy you're referring to is Gene Michaels who as far as I know relinquished the position to Cashman.
Gene Michaels did build the team, but Cashman has kept it competive. You can't blame Brian Cashman for them not hitting this year... and you can't blame him for the 200 million dollar payroll that George created. Cashman only got the autonomy the last few years.. I think he'll be back...
As far as this year is concerned, they signed the people they did for good reason.. Alex they basically did need to resign - no matter what anyone says, he is if not the best, one of the best ball players in baseball; and he will come out of it this year. Rivera has had an excellent year, and Posada while old for a catcher, has only been catching for a small amount of time (since the minors). Most catchers run into knee trouble not arm trouble... his knees and back are fine and I think he will come back strong.
I think NY comes back very strong next year, with some implants whether they're from FA, or minor leaguers.. I'd like to see them give this kid Aceves a shot.. him and Coke have looked great this year, and I wonder how they'll do next year... I think between: Hughes, Kennedy, Aceves, Coke, among others.. they'll be able to find at least 1 solid starter out of that bunch.
I like how people think with Wang that the Yankees "barely" make the playoffs.. considering what they've gone through this year, and just got eliminated from the playoffs with 5 games left.. and might have 90 wins this year...
I highly doubt they bring back Giambi, Abreu and Pettite.. They'll throw stupid money at some free agents, but unlike years past.. I don't think they'll be stupid with the money.
The large payroll really comes from old stupid contracts.. like Jason Giambis.. in 9 years, arod's contract will look like a discount...

"The guy you're referring to is Gene Michaels who as far as I know relinquished the position to Cashman."
Actually Bob Watson followed Michaels, then Cashman. And as I recall he didn't relinquish the post more than he was reassigned by Steinbrenner during one of Steinbrenner's mood swings. Michaels was the architect but you're right, Cashman made sure the dynasty continued. Then the wild spending after 2001 all can be blamed on Steinbrenner (Read Olney's Last Night of the Yankee Dynasty, he chronicles the rash decisions of Steinbrenner).
"I like how people think with Wang that the Yankees "barely" make the playoffs"
Oh come on. Let's stop the injury pity argument. What if the Red Sox didn't lose Ortiz and Drew for more than a month, several starts of Beckett, had Schilling all season. What if the Rays didn't lose Crawford, Longoria, Percival for extended periods. Same argument. The argument is "what if everything went right for us while business as usual happened for every other team."
The yankees real problem is dependence on old contracts like Giambi, lethargy by Cano, a huge overestimation of the impact of Hughes and Kennedy, etc. There's a great Olney article on ESPN right now, more or less I think he's saying history is about to repeat itself.

Hi Yankees fans...
I don't know if you have been paying attention but Posada cannot play C anymore. So he is your 1B/DH next year along with Matsui, which means Damon/Gardner is CF and Damon/Nady is LF. If I am the Yankees I am looking to acquire of right an RF, may be abreu, but you got to figure that you can get someone younger than him.

I don't know if you've been paying attention but you are neither one of his doctors nor a member of the yankee's staff. There is no definitive answer over the state of his shoulder. Whether or not he can still catch is purely speculation at this point. Yankee's fans have no factual reason to believe he won't be catching next year and thus don't see Posada at first. Their holes are currently pitching/cf/1st

Hopefully Cashman comes back. He has been a great GM, and made alot of GREAT moves. Especially, when your as good of a GM as Cashman, and you work under the Steinbrenner's, you have to be considered one of the best in the business, if not the best.
To the guy that has Tex, CC, Abreu and Giambi on the 2009 team, you're nuts, and probably dont know anything about the economics of baseball. Theres no way in hell they can afford all 4 of those guys. Dont tell me that there the Yankees. I know they are. But I also know that Hal Steinbrenner is in charge of the money. Hes the one who pinted out that they couldnt afford Santana. Tex and Sabathia will ask for at least 100 mill, and Giambi will want alot after having the season hes having. IMO, Abreu should be brought back, as well as Moose should. Im not sure about Pettitte though. CC and Tex will not be Yankees. I have a feeling that Sheets or Burnett will be brought in.

Baseball's worst run team wants their GM back? $600 million plus dollars over three years and only two playoff wins. Sounds like a lot of their other stellar personnel moves.

yanks26goin -
I'm going to assume you are talking about me as the one who suggested the Yankees bring in CC and Tex while keeping Abreu and Giambi. Let me show you my math here.
Salary of key Yankees in 2008:
Pavano - $11M
Giambi - $23.4M
Mussina - $11M
Pettitte - $16M
Abreu - $16M
TOTAL - $77M
So that is $77M just on these key guys.
I'm going to assume that you resign Mussina and Abreu for the same money, give or take a few M.
Pettitte, if he comes back, comes back much cheaper than $16M. I'm going to guess $11-12M, similar to a Mussina deal although he deserves the money less.
Pavano. Get him and his $11M out of here. That leaves $11M free.
Giambi - If he comes back, no way he comes back with a deal worth the same cash. One year, $12-15M. $8M difference from 2008 to 2009. That 8 plus Pavano's 11, $19M.
I don't know what CC or Tex will earn but I'm guessing close to $20M for CC and likely close to the same for Tex as he turned down $17.5M a year from Texas.
So, that is a difference of about $20M. Are you telling me that the Yankees, after missing the playoffs for the first time in 13 years and moving into a new multi-billion dollar stadium, are going to be unwilling to add an additional $20-25M?
The Yankees would be fools not to increase the payroll for EXACTLY what they need: A workhorse ace (lefty to boot) and a young switch hitting first baseman.
