« Chad Cordero Elects Free Agency | Main | Offseason Outlook: Tampa Bay Rays »
ESPN's Jerry Crasnick talked to A.J. Burnett's agent Darek Braunecker, who says his client will make his opt-out decision prior to the start of Monday's GM meetings. We all know Burnett is opting out, of course.
Crasnick believes Burnett and Derek Lowe will seek salaries of at least $16MM per year. He names the Yankees, Mets, Rangers, Red Sox, Orioles and Nationals as potential suitors for Burnett. The Blue Jays will remain in the mix as well.

I would throw the Braves into that list of potential suitors too.

Watch him not opt out. It would be hilarious.
Or an extension be announced. It would just be entertaining. Although it probably won't happen.

i believe that if Burnett opts out he'll be a free agent.
As much as i would like him in an Orioles or Nationals uniform, both teams are gonna have to pay some serious cash to land burnett for a year or more

"i believe that if Burnett opts out he'll be a free agent."
Amazing.
Posted by: hiya | October 30, 2008 at 04:33 PM
As a Red Sox fan, I'd welcome either Lowe or Burnett on a 3 or 4 year deal at 16 per. I know it's overpaying, and I'd prefer 3 to 4, but it's an upgrade that will only cost cash.

As a Met fan, I echo what Keenan and Kel (who loves orange soda?) just said. I will take either one on the Mets on a 3/50 type deal.

I love the smartasses giving phoenix88 crap for what he said. But, there is always the off chance that he opts out and then resigns with the Jays. So you guys should consider that before trying to make this kid look like a dick.

As a Yankees fan, I, too, "welcome either Lowe or Burnett on a 3 or 4 year deal at 16 per." Like Kenan and Kel (Boston law firm?) said, 3 or 4 years makes sense from a team perspective.
I think Burnett is a big-game pitcher and would do well in either Boston or NY. Yes, there is a risk, that is why the less year the better.

And believe me, I like making people look like dicks more then anybody. But sometimes it isn't called for.

Imagine Burnett, CC, Teixeira and Manny all Yanks. If any team could do it, it's the yanks. Laugh if you want and say you stupid ignorant yankee fan, but you all know it's possible with the new stadium and all. Boy, would you guys be miserable or what!

lol, regardless, if he opts out, he is technically a free agent and can sign with any team, including the Jays.

Typical delusional Yankee fan.

If you're going to edit his posts, no need to add anything.

A team that can win. That removes the Yankees. The didn't even make the playoffs this year. Losing to a crappy team like the Rays. You know the last place team last year.
Posted by: XD23 | October 30, 2008 at 06:46 PM
at least you took the lesson to heart.
Posted by: ArodSucksAtLife | October 30, 2008 at 07:37 PM
"and also winning 25 world series total"
The Yankees have won 26 total championships. Idiot.

The Braves will be interested in Burnett when he opts, watch.

I don't see the Braves going after Burnett, simply b/c they've been burned with Hampton, and he has just come off the books.

"i believe that if Burnett opts out he'll be a free agent."
No matter what this statement is true. Even if he resigns, there will at least be a period in which he is a free agent. I don't mean to harp on this comment again but I just wanted to let Nrmax know that this comment is true no matter what.

I want Tex and CC as much as the next yank fan, and they'll prolly get them both, but there is no need advertising it so loudly
Posted by: ArodMVP217 | October 31, 2008 at 12:54 AM
Yeah, but the kid obviously meant that if he opts out he thinks he will leave Toronto in the open market. Because of how he phrased his words, people jumped on him for it. It is like giving somebody crap for a typo. I know he will technically be a free agent, but I think Phoenix88 knew that too. Anybody bothering to come to this site knows that once you opt out, "technically", you are a free agent. I am pretty sure he meant that if he opts out he won't be re-working a contract with Toronto (as was rumored possible). That's all. Somebody remind me from time to time just ignore opwie. He doesn't seem to have much baseball knowledge, but he does seem very experienced in using his mouth on the male anatomy. You go girl.

The Orioles and Nationals need to improve their system and spend their money on scouting, not jackasses like Burnett and old veterans like Lowe.
The Yankees can go ahead and sign CC to a 5-year, $140mm insane contract. Then they can watch him gain more weight than Andruw jones and watch his arm fall off.
Lowe probably has 1-2 solid years left. I'd just go back to Boston if I were him.
Texeira's the most solid FA in my opinion. The problem with him being a Yank is, what the hell does New York do with guys like Damon and Posada? They don't have much left in the tank to man their main positions, and if they can't play 1B either, with Matsui likely taking most of the DH time, what would they do?
If they really want Tex, I'd move Damon to a team with either a smaller park or with a DH need (maybe back to Oakland?) and get a guy like Tavares to lead off for a year or two, until Austin is ready. Posada could swap catching and split DH with Matsui, and they can have their man Tex.
Manny isn't going to New York. He wants to whore himself for as much money as possible but he'd be restricted both in his appearance and in is actions way too much. I bet the Braves would pay him enough, or the Angels, who could DH him. He'd be a nice addition over Garret Anderson.
If I'm too far fetched, I'll certainly understand any crap I may get for any of this. But to me, this all seems to make the most sense.

Yanks are still gonna suck next year cause they still have no pitching. They're all either old and washed up or too young with no experience like Hughes and Kennedy that haven't proved anything yet!!
Posted by: Jaysfan85 | November 01, 2008 at 12:29 PM
You can have your Carl Pavano and Sydney Ponson sitting on top of your rotation next year!! What a star studded duo!!
