« Brewers To Listen On Fielder | Main | White Sox Sign Jayson Nix »
John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer has the latest on Reds reliever David Weathers, who is eligible for free agency. Weathers says he's talked to the Reds about coming back, but hasn't discussed dollars. Weathers considered his two-year, $5MM deal to be below-market. He wanted to stay in Cincinnati at that time (December of '06), but now he's open to any team.
Weathers, 39, posted solid ERAs in recent years despite shaky peripheral stats. It should be noted that he cleared waivers in August, implying the contenders looking for bullpen help didn't think too highly of him. He apparently rates as a Type B free agent, but it's not known whether the Reds will offer him arbitration.

If they don't offer him arbitration, the white sox might listen.

Signs like he might be trying to drive up his own price, although you never know or get the Reds to commit to a multi-year deal. The fact that he cleared waivers is pretty telling

There's no reason to care if he's offered arbitration or not. It doesn't change anything for other teams if he is.

The Cardinals could use him.

How about the Nationals? They seem to always be on out lookout for bargain players.
As Weathers is a type B free agent, even if the Reds offer him arbitration, the compensation is a sandwich pick which means the other team does not give up any draft picks.

I would expect a bunch of teams to be in on Weathers. He's been a very consistent reliever for the past few years, and has closing experience. I could see a team like the Mets offering him something like 2/9, if they added a closer through a trade.

It matters if the Reds off him arb, because they will not get a compensation pick if they don't. It is not relevant for other teams, as cowsarecool220 said.

id love for weathers to leave and the reds get a sandwich pick. weathers era looks nice and all but he will scare you to death when he comes in. gives up hits , walks batters , as a red fan i have no problem letting him walk and bringing carlos fisher up to take his place.

Exactly. It may not matter to anyone else, but it matter to Cincy. No reason to not offer him arb. Downside is one year of Weathers at market value.
Omar should sign Weathers, sign Affeldt, sign Cruz, and resign Ayala. Have an open closer competition in ST, then designate a guy for the spot once the season starts. I would be fine with a bullpen of Ayala, Cruz, Weathers, Affeldt, Show, Smith, Parnell.

Wait, is that comp. pick in the 1st round compensation or 2nd?
Posted by: ballerwhiteboy | October 28, 2008 at 07:54 PM
if im not mistaken it would be a sandwich pick in between the 1st and 2nd round so if a team were to sign weathers they wouldnt be losing a draft pick just the reds would pick one up. if someone knows for sure you might want to correct me if im wrong. if the reds let weathers go i seriously expect them to try everything to keep affeldt

NRMAX, I think that would be a pretty decent idea for the Mets to look at. It won't blow their payroll, plus they'll have even more money to add to their rotation. You know, money to throw at Ollie Perez and another starter, maybe like, a Ben Sheets or something.
And I think the Mets should pull a Maddon move, like not designating a closer, and just use a rotating door: whoever's best for that situation. It seems to work with the Ray's, as they had Percival, then Qualls, Balfour, Price, Howell all had part of closing duties.

nrmax,
That would be a solid plan for the offseason but realistically there would be a legitimate chance that they need a closer by July. Not that it would be a huge issue, that's a better plan than just throwing big money at Rodriguez, but guys like Cruz, Ayala, Weathers and Affeldt haven't really proven much as closers, and it's not a sure thing that someone emerges. You end up like Milwaukee, who had Torres closing games, and although he was decent, that's far from ideal.

Bleedin Blue, Qualls is on the D'Bags, not rays.
