« Mets Won't Bid On Sabathia | Main | Giants Considering Top Players »
Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune heard from Randy Johnson's agent that the Cubs would be on the "short list" of teams Johnson would consider. Alan Nero, who represents Johnson, said that his client "would seem to be a perfect fit" for the Cubs.
Sullivan also spoke with Cubs sources who confirmed that they would be interested in Johnson if they can't add Jake Peavy and keep Ryan Dempster.
The Dodgers are also interested in Johnson, who is unlikely to return to Arizona.
Johnson, 45, had a 3.91 ERA in 184 innings last year. He's just five career wins away from 300.

Just go out and sign Peavy and Dempster that way we won't have to worry about bringing in another washed up pitcher
(AKA, J. Marquis).

Karena
You cant just sign Peavy because HE ISNT A FREE AGENT
Posted by: BaseballFanatic40 | November 15, 2008 at 11:00 AM
Sign him so you don't have to face him. Aren't they like 0-15 against him lifetime?
Posted by: cubz23 | November 15, 2008 at 11:04 AM
I think a list of the players the Cubs aren't interested in would be shorter.
Posted by: Kenan and Kel | November 15, 2008 at 11:05 AM
Signing Johnson would be such a step down for the Cubs.
The comment about falling back on Johnson if they dont get Peavy or Dempster would be like going to the bar one night and spending the whole night hanging out with a super hot chick and then having her go home with someone else so instead you go and take home some hurtin cougar.
Johnson's best days are well behind him. The Cubs dont need the added attendance that Johnson's upcoming career wins milestone will bring out so I see no other reason to even be discussing him.
It would be a waste of money, he will sit on the DL again all season.

is cubs running low on money? making all these plan b and c...
Posted by: Braves_4_Ever | November 15, 2008 at 11:11 AM
are the cubs* i mean
Posted by: Braves_4_Ever | November 15, 2008 at 11:12 AM
It's silly to call Johnson a "waste of money" before we even know what kind of money he will command on a one-year deal.
He pitched closed to 200 innings last season with an ERA under 4.00 and an ERA+ well above average. There's definitely value in that, and the Cubs should be ecstatic that Johnson is interested in joining the rotation.

The cougar comment made me laugh, but to say Johnson's best days are behind him is foolish. Did you see his 2nd half stats last year?
Posted by: Smoltz's Beard | November 15, 2008 at 11:31 AM
it think that Randy would be a good idea for the RedSox,
1: They are currently in the market 4 a starter,
2: He would be a great dugout precence
3: He would help the young guns develop,(Masterson, Bowden, Bucholz, etc.)

Posted by: karena | November 15, 2008 at 12:03 PM
i agree with Cubz23...i think it COULD be a good idea. How fast does he throw now days? He comes with a risk tho, thats the only con i have with him. Plus we have 1 pitcher who is a rick already, so i am in the middle with this idea.
Posted by: cubs land | November 15, 2008 at 12:06 PM
I am not saying Johnson is done. However, we already have Harden who has to be watched closely and miss starts. That BP could be heavily used. All the more to sign Woody. So his closer slot is secured and the other guys slide down a slot to pick up the gaps from Harden or Johnson (if that becomes reality). Now if Dempster resigns and they sign Johnson to replace Marquis (if somehow Hendry can trade him), that is ok.
I'm hoping my initial thoughts at the end of the year don't come true and we loose both Wood and Dempster.
Posted by: studio179 | November 15, 2008 at 12:07 PM
I guess they are not viewing Dempster AND Johnson. The reports say Johnson REPLACING Dempster.
Posted by: studio179 | November 15, 2008 at 12:09 PM
it's amazing the cubs have money for randy johnson but not kerry wood.
Posted by: mmontice | November 15, 2008 at 12:17 PM
They have the money for Johnson because he's a starter and Wood isn't anymore. The rotation is in more need then the bullpen.
Posted by: VerizonWireless | November 15, 2008 at 12:55 PM
Trade the 5 players for peavy dumb dempster sign furcal move theriot to second base put derosa in right fukudome and johnson in center. Thatd give the cubs no excuses for not winning the world series. thatd be the best team in baseball ON PAPER. and thats a dream thats a possibility. lineup would probly be something like
Furcal
Theriot/Derosa/Fukudome
Lee
Ramirez
Soriano
Soto
Derosa/Fukudome
Theriot/Fukudome
Zambrono
Peavy
Harden
Lily
Marquis sadley :( unless they can find a stupid team willing to take him on their team.
Posted by: CMichaels6 | November 15, 2008 at 01:02 PM
im fine with loosing dempster as long as they get a guy better than johnson to replace him.
if johnsons the replacement thatd be horrible.
Posted by: CMichaels6 | November 15, 2008 at 01:03 PM
Verizon Wireless,
Randy johnson is going to be 46 next year, and although i understand he is effective at times, he becomes more injury prone every year. I would argue that $5M for Wood is money better spent than $8M for Johnson.
Also let's assume here that the Cubs don't resign Dempster and sign Johnson to a one year deal instead. If the Cubs aren't going to trade Marshall, they really need to give him more of an opportunity to develop in 2009 because the 2010 rotation gets ultra thin.
1) Zambrano
2) Lilly
3) The Shark?
4) ?
5) ?
And as we all know, the Cubs minor league system isn't exactly bursting with close to major league ready SP talent. So ultimately, the
Cubs will be in an even worse position after next year.
Posted by: mmontice | November 15, 2008 at 01:18 PM
mmontice-
You forgot Harden.
Posted by: cubs4ever | November 15, 2008 at 01:43 PM
cubs4ever,
that is the potential cubs 2010 rotation.
Posted by: mmontice | November 15, 2008 at 01:52 PM
I hope the Cubs let Dempster go he isn't worth 4yrs 50 million, let some other team sign him to a 5/70 mill. Dempster will not win more than 12 games again!
Posted by: bcaine | November 15, 2008 at 03:16 PM
Cubs need a bonafide #2 who is consistently good and consistently healthy. As a matter of fact, I would suggest that Zambrano doesn't even fit that description and I won't even dare discuss Harden.
Does Peavy fit that bill? Sure. But the Cubs don't have anyone in the farm system with an impact arm or bat that is near or already MLB ready for the next 2 years that piques a team's interest. The only one that would be coveted is Vitters and even he's yet to prove himself. Therefore, you can scratch the dream of having Peavy unless there's a 3rd team involved which leads me to believe that that is not highly probably.
I say the best option is to resign Dempster and take a risk on Randy Johnson in a 1 year deal with Marquis and Marshall providing depth if they aren't traded for other areas of need.
Posted by: cr_hartley01 | November 15, 2008 at 03:26 PM
If the Cubs have Unit and Harden in the rotation they better have good #6 and #7 starter options too.
Posted by: MPM | November 15, 2008 at 04:21 PM
MMnotice-
Wood is going to need about a contract with 10 million annunally. The Cubs decided that the rotation needed to be addreseed with that 10 million instead of a closer with injury problems. I know he has been healthy but this has been his career year as a relief pitcher. I agree that they should do anything to try to convince him to accept arbitration because I would love to have him back. Simply what I was stating, was that Hendry said he wanted to use the money to shore up the rotation, not make the bullpen better. The Cubs have tons of bullpen arms in the wings and not as many starting arms.
Posted by: VerizonWireless | November 15, 2008 at 04:30 PM
Well maybe not tons of arms, but the arms they have for the bullpen are more plentiful then their starting arms.
2008 Pen
1. Marmol- SU/CL
2. Kevin Gregg- SU/CL
3. Samardzija- SU
4. Cotts- Lefty Specialist
5. Wuertz- Middle Relief
6. Guadin- Middle Relief
7. Marshall- Long man
Waiting in the Wings
1. Guzman- Power Arm(Lou wanted him in the spot that Marmol took in 2007)
2. Ascanio- 23 year old with tons of upside. Comparable to Marmol with the power fastball and nasty slider
3. Hart- Tons of upside still, made the postseason roster after having a great september in 2007
4. Paperlbon- Oneri Fleita is already calling him a major league pticher because he gets leftys out.
5. Pignatiello- gets leftys out
6. Petrick- big power arm that pitched for them during 2007
As you can see, the Cubs have many arms in their farm system with at least some experience in the bullpen or that the organization feels they are about ready to come up and contribute. The need for Wood has become less since they feel they have depth in their minors system.

If the Cubs sign Sheets and Dempster our rotation is set. No Peavy No Johnson no alternate options no nothing.
Zambrano
Sheets
Harden
Lilly
Dempster
* No particular order
Posted by: BLEEDINGCUBBIEBLUE | November 15, 2008 at 11:55 PM
My thoughts are on Getting Zito in a trade for Soriano. the contracts would wash. Sign R. Johnson for 1 year then we would have 3 lefties in the rotation. Sign Furcal or trade for Aybar [Angels} for less money. and sign Abreu
1] Furcal/Theriot
2] Theriot/Aybar
3] Abreu
4] Ramirez
5] Soto
6] Lee
7] DeRosa lf
8] Fukudome/ Johnson cf
1] Lilly
2] Big Z
3] Zito
4] Harden
5] Johnson

The Cubs should save money by trading for Peavy. Let Dempster go and take the draft picks. We have Marshall who can do fine as a #5 after we trade Marquis for free. For th3 2010 rotation there will be some more great pitchers for the Cubs to make big offers for. Halladay being one of them. Can you imagine a rotation of Zambrano, Peavy, Halladay in 2010?
I would trade sign Furcal and trade for Roberts to have our lineup be a OBP machine.
What do you think?
Posted by: uww1 | November 17, 2008 at 12:52 PM
Whoever thinks its a good idea to trade zito for soriano is rediculous. Soriano is very productive and at least worth close to what we are paying him. Zito is horrible.
Posted by: uww1 | November 17, 2008 at 12:54 PM
"Zito for Soriano" all I can say is DUMB!!!!!!
