« Mets Join Yanks In Sabathia Chase? | Main | Rosenthal's Latest: Swisher, Wood, Hermida »
We learned yesterday that the Diamondbacks offered Randy Johnson around $2-3MM, while he would've settled for $8MM. Now he's on the open market, and could be a bargain on a one-year deal. The Angels are not interested, but MLB.com's Ken Gurnick says Johnson is high on the Dodgers' list. This would be a fine way for Ned Colletti to kick off his offseason.

Having Randy Johnson as your #5 pitcher can never be a bad thing. It'll also help the PR department as he chases win # 300. He had an ERA+ of 117 last year, making him almost 20% more productive than an average pitcher. Even if he drops down to a 100 ERA+, having that in the #5 spot of a rotation is always welcome.

Randy Johnson is a miserable old man who will have an ERA over 5.00 and break down around July and for good measure will be a horrible influence on the young pitchers and the clubhouse. NO THANKS.

Sdecee,
Why do you think he'd be a horrible influence on young pitchers? What justification do you have for this? Randy's chasing his 300th win. There were no reports of him being "a miserable old man" last year in Arizona.

The Dbacks were incredibly stupid for not resigning Johnson for $8 mil. He's going to get at least 10 wins, and they would have made all the money back on Johnson's 300th win t-shirts, hats, mugs, wall calendars, and flame throwers.
Whoever picks up Johnson for $8 mil is going to get a steal of a deal. You get 10 wins, a veteran to teach your young guys, and all the merchandise money you can imagine.

I am not so happy about this rumor. Randy is way past his peak and I can't imagine getting much more than 10-8 out of him next year (IF he remains healthy).
I haven't liked him since his first day in NY. When he got in that argument with the sports reporter. He just looked like a jerk.

"Randy Johnson over Brad Penny? lol, Ned is as dumb as he has always appeared to be."
You're assuming Penny is healthy. There's a significant chance that Penny's shoulder requires surgery. If that's true, then letting him go was easily the correct choice.

Welcome to LA Randy, I would love to have you here. If we can sign RJ and then another SP like CC (iffy with the Yankees offer) or Oliver Perez or Ben Sheets, and then we have a rotation that can be 6-7-8 pitchers deep just like last year, with James Mcdonald starting in AAA and coming up if a starter gets injured, and then having Stults, Park, and Kuo ready to come in and spot start right behind him.

Dodgersbruin:
The justification I have is watching him up close for two years in NY. His first day he got into a pushing incident with a photog and belittled the poor man. He was a pariah in the clubhouse...nobody liked him and he was zero help to the young pitchers. He is the epitome of the me-first player and you can have him. He may have been better in AZ but he has history there that he doesn't have in LA where he will be a broken down mercenary. Not worth the risk. If Maddox was a little bit younger I would love to have him work with the kids but not this jerk.
Sign Raffy, CC and bring back Beltre & Lowe and I will take my chances.

Trust me, you don't want Oliver Perez here for the money he will command. He is a space cadet who can blow up at any time and rarely answers the bell for big games. I believe the Mets, who need starting pitching as much as anybody, will let him walk if the numbers get stupid. Lowe would be a much better signing for three years even at his advanced age as sinkerball pitchers last longer anyway and Lowe has shown he steps up during big games.

I just don't see the plan in all this.
Does Ned want to focus on pitching or hitting? He claims he wants pitching but all he ever does is talk to Manny. Now, after Joe Torre said the team should focus mainly on pitching, he decides that Randy Johnson is the way to go. If they're going to shy away from CC because of 24 million a year and then offer Manny 20-22 a year, than they're out of their minds. CC and Lowe are the only two reliable elite pitchers on the market, we need one of them or we're toast.

"Randy Johnson over Brad Penny? lol, Ned is as dumb as he has always appeared to be"
You are joking, right? Penny likely isn't injured any more, but appears frightened out of his mind to throw at more than 70% or so. You can't have that on the mound. Meanwhile, Johnson is still an above average pitcher. We are talking 3-4 quality and the price is right.

Unless Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp suddenly fill out their 30 HR a year potential next year, the Dodgers need Manny at least as much as they need CC. As for Lowe, he seems pretty clear that he doesn't want back in L.A. I would bet that convincing Maddux to not retire or to coach would help change that, but don't see it as likely.
