Darvish Wants 200 Wins In Japan
Don't look for Yu Darvish to be pitching in America any time soon. Patrick at NPB Tracker speculates that Darvish might actually be thankful for Junichi Tazawa taking some of the MLB spotlight and speculation off of him.
Darvish told a crowd of over 43,000 fans that he "isn't dreaming of Major League Baseball," and wants to win 200 games in his Japanese career. He's got a ways to go, but he's about 25% of the way there with 48 career NPB wins.
Darvish, 22, has posted a 31-9 record with a 1.85 ERA and 418 Ks through 408.1 IP in the past two seasons. He also said he would accept an invitation to play for Japan in the World Baseball Classic.

Given that he is 22, he could feasibly get 200 wins before he's 30 and then come over and play in the MLB. However, he may never want to come over here...

He's living the rockstar life in Japan right now. If he thinks he can do that, plus get a mega-huge paycheck in the US, he'll swim the Pacific himself to play here.

I don't believe this at all. I think Darvish will be tempted to come over to the MLB once he sees the level of MLB play in the WBC...I actually believe being on a team with Okajima, Dice-K, and Ichiro will eventually influence him to come over. I expect next offseason

I guess this is somewhat good news for NY fans that didn't want Cashman to sign another Japanese pitcher. He was the only one I read that Cashman was thinking of signing.

what a p$%#y!! nobody wants a coward in america. alot of players in japan are probably afraid to come to play ball here. take a gyroball and shove it up your a$$!!

Us in the West might be able to fully understand why a player anywhere would want none of the Yankees or whoever else. In all of Asia he and his popstar wife is maybe one of the most famous pairs around. Similar personalities might be how David Beckham and his wife were to England. It's true that money talks, but, he's making quite a bit of money outside of baseball due to his very special status. I can see him possibly never playing here like other Japanese Leaguers, or, until maybe when he's past his prime, like Beckham.

We have to remember that Americans believe they are the only ones with money in the world, which is generally true in many comparisons, but, here we're talking about regions of the world in Asia that have the highest per capita income, yes, even compared to the US, and, in some ways places like China and Korea are less harder hit by the worldwide mortgage crisis.

I think you guys need to realize its also not all about money. The MLB is the best there is. Period. The NPB is pretty far behind, and this guy has repeatedly said that he wants to be the best he can, and wants to achieve the most he can. The best he can do is coming over and playing in the MLB for whatever team. The NPB may be a great league, and players in Japan may love it over there, but in no way shape of form is the level of play close to the MLB...if he wants a real challenge, he should come play in America. Its not all about money...

Alright, a few things people need to remember:
1) Japanese leagues have control over their players for I believe 10 years (maybe more), which means Darvish has 6 or 7 years left under control. Yes that means he'll still be 28 or 29 by the time he gets to make his own choice but my point is still 6 or 7 years left.
2) With the way things are going for the NPB I actually would be surprised if the Fighters post Darvish. While yes, a 75M posting fee could potentially pay off a teams obligations for a couple of years, the rumors are the NPB is worried about the loss of prominent players. Add to that the NPB is a much smaller league than the MLB and therefore has much more to lose. When long run potential loss is worse than short run gain no team will accept that gain.
3) The Tazawa situation has damaged MLB/NPB relations.

I know i can't believe that Darvish 'thinks' that American baseball isn't vastly superior to playing whatever they do over in Japan with those balls, bats and gloves.
He should just admit that he hasn't played baseball yet, put down the nerf ball (or whatever they use (lychee fruit?)pick up an American baseball and get over and play for the Yankees so he can stop being such a hypocrite.

Baseballz, i would never in a million years play for the yanks, neither would a lot of stars. Why is he a coward and stupid for not wanting to lose his family, superstar status, and very comfterble lifestyle to play on the most hated team on earth. He is only 22 and you want him to just leave everything behind for a team that didnt make the playoffs. Please realize that most everyone out of NY hates the bombers. Maybe he jus wants to be a superstar in Japan.

From your comments i can only assume that you are from the south side of Hiroshima, or possibly Nagasaki.
Because if you were on the south side of anything American you would know that Baseball here rocks.
So all i have to say is, hey, put down the kimono, turn on some american baseball, and just bask in all the awesome unreflectve American glory.
Cause, If you aren't already tanned, you will be a light shade of brown after being exposed to the awesome reflection of American awesomeness.
And that me brighting up the day of some poor chap on the southside of Nagasaki.
Now you can't go saying Americans havenever done anything nice for Japan.

That's why where ever you go, you see Yankees hats and any stadium that the Yankees play in, half are cheering for them (outside of Boston, obviously). Good point. Let me remind you that before all the TBers jumped on the Rays bandwagon this year, when the Yankees played there it was virtually a home game.

Exactly. Not to put down Japanese baseball, but anybody that is any sort of competitor wants to go up against the best competition there is. I understand that he enjoys himself where he is, but if your passion is baseball, don't you want to play with and beat the best? It's like making the varsity team and opting to play for the JV team. Especially for a guy as talented as Darvish appears to be. And it's not as if he is coming to America because Americans are the best baseball players, the best baseball league in the world just happens to be in America. It's where the cream of the crop are from all over the world.

Didn't the Yankees drop a truck load on Kei Igawa? I'd say the Matsuzaka investment is working out slightly better than the one for Igawa.

thats not the point. it sure as hell wasn't even close to matsuzaka's. the point is that you clowns have a yankee double-standard for everything. so youre saying that if the "investment works out", then its ok? so if they sign CC for a lot of money, you guys wont complain if he does good for the duration of the contract? riiiight.
