K-Rod to the Rangers?! Is he insane? If the Rangers are spending that kind of money on a free agent pitchers, it would/should probably be a starter.

I noticed he didnt mention bradley at all. Tim, what is your prediction for Bradley? Do he and the Rays seem like the best fit, and can they afford him? What kind of deal do you see him getting?
Posted by: delmonmvp | November 03, 2008 at 09:01 AM
Yes, he is insane. He has Lidge for MVP. Case closed.

K-Rod to the Rangers is an awful idea.
The Rangers have the best farm system in baseball and seem to be on pace to be serious contenders in a couple years. Considering that, what good does signing a declining, expensive closer to a long term deal do? The Rangers need to continue to compile building blocks for the future, not waste assets.

Oh I see, so the Red Sox essentially take the offseason off this year. That makes sense. Or not.

I have been disappointed with Heyman's work lately but read the column anyway.
If the Astros can sign Sheets 2 years for 28 million I think thats a great deal for them. Its worth a roll of the dice to sign Sheets for two years and have him and Oswalt at the top of the staff.

And the Tigers as a dark horse to Lowe? They would have to shed lots of bucks.
Posted by: HypnoToad | November 03, 2008 at 09:14 AM
While it would be nice to have K-Rod on the Rangers, no way they need to be spending that kind of money on a guy that will only pitch one inning when they have so many arms in their system that could fill that spot for a lot less then 5yrs/75 mil

This wasn't predicting 40 FA! This was like 12-15 predictions and the rest just comments on who they are? Heyman sucks!

Is calling him Jon Hymen in bad taste?
Posted by: HypnoToad | November 03, 2008 at 09:20 AM
3,7,8, and 9 are the only ones I see happening. Sabathia will not be a Yankee, Teixeira is not going to settle for $18.5/year on average, Burnett will be Jay, F-Rod worth $15/year? Nope, Lowe will be a Dodger, Brave, or BoSox.
Posted by: BravesRed | November 03, 2008 at 09:23 AM
We cant wait for your list Tim, we will be nicer to you; partly because you are sensible.
Posted by: HypnoToad | November 03, 2008 at 09:25 AM
These are not predictions, they are guesses, much like any of us would make. Take em for what they are ..something for us to talk about before the hot stove really gets going.

Much like everyone else here, I cannot see the Rangers making a real play for K-Rod. If anything, I think that the only higher-profile free agent attempts they will even consider will be towards starters.
If the Rangers hire Mike Maddux, would that open the door to a serious offer to Sheets and maybe a stronger consideration on his part?
Posted by: casey | November 03, 2008 at 09:37 AM
Casey:
They did hire Mike Maddux. Washington wanted Petersen was good to see Nolan lay down the law.
Daniels is def dumb enough to sign K rod.
Posted by: kinsler5 | November 03, 2008 at 09:38 AM
I'm not so sure about that. While there have been as many godawful trades to go along with his good trades, Daniels' signings have actually been decent-to-solid in most cases. the one's that haven't worked out were very low risk to begin with.
Posted by: casey | November 03, 2008 at 09:47 AM
If Yankees already didn't have Rivera, I bet Cushman would try to sign K-Rod.
Posted by: BravesRed | November 03, 2008 at 09:51 AM
I say Bradley stays with Texas. I think he should, anyway.

Half those predictions seem unlikely and WHERES THE BRAVES?...maybe its cuuz iam a braves fan but iam pretty sure frank wren said he will acquire 2 starters this winter...and a left fielder.
Posted by: Braves_4_Ever | November 03, 2008 at 10:01 AM
Heyman is a putz. "Pat Burrell can still hit 30HR - in Citizens Joke Yard". Burrel's Home/Away Splits: 12/21. Thats a pace of 42HR on the road, while 24 at home, yet he can only hit 30 in CBP? We can tell Heyman really does his homework.
Posted by: lorecore | November 03, 2008 at 10:13 AM
K-Rod will not sign with the Rangers. Jon Daniels isn't intelligent, but he's not stupid enough to give big bucks to a closer when the starting pitching is nonexistent.
Braves will pick up a pitcher. They have 40MM to spend.

"I noticed he didnt mention bradley at all. Tim, what is your prediction for Bradley? Do he and the Rays seem like the best fit, and can they afford him? What kind of deal do you see him getting?"
Milton Bradley IMO is an interesting case.
Ben Reiter, another SI author, had Bradley going to the Rays (but then, he also had Pudge going to the A's, and the Padres picking up Anderson, which are outright ridiculous).
I could see something like 2/28, 3/30, with option years, etc.

"Heyman is a putz."
Agreed 100%. He's a moron who has no concept of baseball beyond BA, HR, RBI.
Posted by: icedrake523 | November 03, 2008 at 10:22 AM
with the way Madden runs his team i think Bradley could be a good fit. its just a matter of keeping him incident free. hes proven he can be a good hitter.
Posted by: GeneralManager | November 03, 2008 at 10:27 AM
I think we can all agree that Heyman is in that Steve Phillips category of baseball writers who are completely worthless. The ideas he comes up with are ideas most fans could think of. I mean come on, I probably could have written a better column than that.
Also, JRD,
That's like saying the Cardinals would go after Tex if they didn't have Pujols. Uhh..
