I will be SOOOOOOO upset if Tavarez ends up on the Sox!!!

For some reason I have a hard time believing the Mets balked at acquiring Houston Street for Heilman and Feliciano. There must of been more parts involved for the Mets to reject that trade.

TAVERAS

WILLY TAVERAS

T-A-V-E-R-A-S

Not Tavarez

Why is this so stinking hard?!

Yeah id have to agree, i would have thought that Minya would be extatic to get a closer of Streets abilities for just Heilman and Feliciano.

If anything that would be a clear win for the Mets if the Rox agreed to that.

Of course the Reds are interested in
Willy T-A-V-E-R-A-S. He fills a need they don't have.

I mean, Jockitchy says the Reds need a Right Handed power hitter to play Left Field and then allows Josh Willingham to slip through his fingers.

But, oh baby, with the Reds already having Ryan Freel, Norris Hopper and Chris Dickerson on the roster and signed, they just HAVE to sign either Jerry Hairston Jr or trade for T-A-V-E-R-A-S.

See, telling everybody publicly what you need and are looking for then signing and trading for guys to put in positions you already have filled is the sign of a genius at the controls and is what winning teams do.

Either that or a sign of what happens when an organization has a meddling Owner, who hires his buddy as GM and then they go out and hire a couple of washed up GM's (Bavasi and Bonifay) to bloat the Front Office and cause the focus on whatever paln they might have to go out the window and the decision making processes to get bogged down to a point that, whatever they do decide to do, it is too late because some other team has come in signed or traded for that player or players.

the Mets turned down Street for Feliciano and Heilman? What am I missing? I mean, I actually probably like both Feliciano and Heilman more than most Met fans, but that seems pretty reasonable.

Only possible thing I can think is that Minaya has gotten some other inquiries on Heilman that he wants to pursue, and he is assuming that the market on the free agent closers is going to be so limited that he can get K-Rod at a great price. (has to be K-Rod, if it's Fuentes then I'd STILL want to see them get Street, and let them be a righty-lefty closer-8th inning platoon.

I believe that the reason Minaya didn't make the trade is because he is optimistic that he can trade Scot Schoenweis to unload his contract. Then the Mets would need to keep Feliciano as a lefty specialist.

Aaron Heilman is going to be a dominant pitcher as soon as he leaves the Mets.

ctowncowboy,

you'll have to let that willingham situation go.

With that trade, the Mets could have had the following opportunities:

1) given a one-time very good closer in Street the opportunity to pitch the 9th inning, at a very young age of 25 when the '09 season starts. Even though he hasn't been the '05 and '06 Street in recent years, he is still effective and he could very well return to his dominance of his rookie and second seasons with a change of scenery.

2) Changed the entire aura of the team by ridding the team of two of the main cogs in a disastrous bullpen. Even though some Mets fans such as myself don't totally hate those two guys, most Mets fans will have a heart attack if both of these guys are pitching games at Citi Field next year, especially Heilman.

3) Given themselves the opportunity to sign an 8th inning setup man like Juan Cruz to replace one of those guys, most likely Heilman.

4) Left Schoeneweis as the only LOOGY in the 'pen, where he is actually effective. Plus, his contract is a little overpriced but he is serviceable as a lefty specialist and nothing more.

5) Allowed yourself to balk at the ridiculous prices of Brian Fuentes and Francisco Rodriguez.
