« Yanks Decline Options On Giambi, Pavano | Main | Boras Wants Posada Money For Varitek »
According to MLB.com's Jason Beck, the Tigers will enter the mix for free agent shortstop Rafael Furcal. A one-year deal would be ideal for the Tigers, if Furcal is willing to entertain it. However, Furcal will be the best available shortstop if he reaches the open market.

one year deal aye? if thats true they have no chance at him.

What?
The Tigers just need a guy to play good defense and be a decent hitter at the plate. They need to spend money on pitching. They can find offense from Cabrera, Guillen, Granderson, Polanco, Sheffield, Joyce, Ordonez and Inge.

I'd like the giants to go after Furcal 2 year deal
Posted by: GiantsBob | November 04, 2008 at 05:20 PM
Tigers should go after Greene...
And Scribble...are you really considering Sheffield and Inge offensive threats now? You are right though, Cabrera, Guillen, Granderson, Joyce, Ordonez and Polanco make that lineup (if performing) very strong...

what about the sox going after furcal?
Posted by: redsoxhotstove | November 04, 2008 at 05:26 PM
if furcal doesnt sign with the dodgers it will be because hes getting paid elsewhere. I see no less than a 3 year deal with 4th option. sometin like 3/40 might get it done. I can see the Twins actually paying that for someone of Furcals caliber. They were willing to talk about 3/30 for o cab, and hes not half the player furcal is.

what about the sox going after furcal?
what happen to lowrie? you cant have him sit in the minors and they would need to trade him for something good.
Posted by: 661dodgerblue | November 04, 2008 at 05:29 PM
"what about the sox going after furcal?"
no...
whatabout giving jed lowerie a chance.. hes ready.... as proven...
Posted by: GoSoX | November 04, 2008 at 05:30 PM
To block Lowrie again? The Red Sox won't go after Furcal because they have to keep the payroll on Lugo because he has such negative value.
Posted by: B3NG4L | November 04, 2008 at 05:30 PM
lol lugo, it must be hard to play ss in boston
Posted by: 661dodgerblue | November 04, 2008 at 05:32 PM
Tigers should give him two years
Then it will give them some flexibility with the better developement of either Cale Iorg or Danny Worth
Posted by: pskip13 | November 04, 2008 at 05:33 PM
...although I don't think ss should be the first priority
Posted by: pskip13 | November 04, 2008 at 05:37 PM
Milwaukee should spend some money on him. Move Hardy to 3B or see if Furcal would be willing to man 2B.
Then, they'd have a legit leadoff man too
Posted by: jza1218 | November 04, 2008 at 05:38 PM
Once again he will probably resign with LA and if he doesnt it wont be for a 1 or 2 year deal. Why would he? he is by far the top SS in a very very thin market there is no reason to take a deal like that when other clubs will offer more....
Posted by: Den_Orath | November 04, 2008 at 05:39 PM
What happened to the talk about the Tigers not increasing payroll? Furcal is clearly going to cost some dough to leave LA. And the Tigers have multiple other holes. This looks to be a pipe dream, all things considered.
Posted by: DodgersBruin | November 04, 2008 at 05:41 PM
lolololol good luck getting Furcal out of LA
Posted by: mattkemp27 | November 04, 2008 at 05:42 PM
The Braves should try to send Yunel Escobar and a prospect to Detroit in exchange for Maggs. It would plug in holes for both teams plus Detroit would have some cash freed up to spend on pitching. Atlanta would get some much needed pop from the right side of the plate and Detroit would get a solid .295 - .300 hitter who plays great defense. (His arm is as good as Furcal's.)

Agreed bruin. I still see the Twins signing him if the dodgers dont. The Twins do not have a legitimate SS candidate in their farm system so they would have no problem with a 3 year deal with an option for a fourth. They also have 30 mil to spend so they could do say 15 mil a year while still having enough for a realiever and a 3b
Posted by: Den_Orath | November 04, 2008 at 05:43 PM
Furcal has been mentioned with the Cubs, too, as they are looking for a leadoff hitter. It wouldn't make much sense with Theriot as their shortstop, but what if they were open to trading Theriot? I really don't have a good concept of what Theriot is worth...he seems pretty average all around, except for his batting average...
There'd be a problem with payroll in that case, I'd assume too, but still.
Posted by: Dave | November 04, 2008 at 05:43 PM
kemp if the dodgers sign manny at 28-30 mil a year a starter like burnett lowe for 16-18 a year casey blake or crede for 6-8 mil a year and have to sign a reliever. thats 50-60 mil. plus arbitration. so they might run out of cash for furcals 15 mil a year. I still give the dodgers the best chance at signing him but its not out of the question that he walks.
Posted by: Den_Orath | November 04, 2008 at 05:45 PM
hes not going to settle for 1 year. and how in the heck can they afford him? They would have to trade mags, and good luck trading an older, over priced vet without eating 6-7 mm per year.
Posted by: clarknaddison | November 04, 2008 at 05:51 PM
Theriot is a nice player, but you would have to package him with another player to get anything worth while.
Posted by: clarknaddison | November 04, 2008 at 05:52 PM
Den,
The Dodgers haven't been linked the either Burnett or Lowe. Furcal is also more of a priority than anyone other than Manny. With Blake Dewitt, the Dodgers can choose between a 2B or 3B in a trade of FA next year. In fact, Torre prefers Dewitt at 3B. Furcal walks if he gets an insane deal somewhere else for more years than the Dodgers will offer, not because the Dodgers acquired too many FAs.
In fact, Furcal is almost guaranteed to sign before Manny.
Posted by: DodgersBruin | November 04, 2008 at 05:53 PM
ok thats a joke Den Orath,
there not even interested in AJ Burnett and Furcal isnt going to cost 15 mil because he loves LA and is going to give them a discount
Posted by: mattkemp27 | November 04, 2008 at 05:54 PM
Kemp,
It's not a discount because he loves LA. It's because he was injured. Very few players give a hometown discount. Furcal was with the Dodgers for less time than he was in Atlanta. He chased the biggest paycheck 3 years ago. He's likely to do it again. He's likely to pick LA if deals are comparable. But don't cite hometown discounts.
If you remember, 2 years ago JD Drew swore up and down he wasn't going to opt out of his contract because he and his wife loved LA. 2 weeks later he signed with the Red Sox.
Posted by: DodgersBruin | November 04, 2008 at 05:58 PM
furcal would be great for the cubs. theriot to second, derosa in right. reed and kosuke platoon in CF
Posted by: kevinhendrix9 | November 04, 2008 at 05:58 PM
Kemp, i suggested another starter because i think the Dodgers will lose out on CC. If you read my post i still said that it was very likely he resigned. i was just putting that out as a possible senario, albeit an unlikely one. was just looking for a little feedback no need to blow things out of persepctive
Posted by: Den_Orath | November 04, 2008 at 06:04 PM
ok dodgerbruin you must not be that big of a dodger fan. Furcal has a great relationship with Joe Torre and loves LA...he has already said that he would sign for less with the dodgers and then any other team
and Den, I do completely agree with you that the dodgers will lose out on CC
Posted by: mattkemp27 | November 04, 2008 at 06:10 PM
please!
give us Jack Wilson!!!
Posted by: pskip13 | November 04, 2008 at 06:27 PM
I would like to see the Tigers sign him only if they trade Ordonez. There is no way that they can afford pitching/catcher after they give Furcal a contract.
Posted by: Rob M. | November 04, 2008 at 07:06 PM
Rob M that is what I was thinking if you sign Furcal then you trade Magglio for the best package and not for one that has to include a SS.
Posted by: RCFOM | November 04, 2008 at 07:14 PM
Kemp, being a Dodgers fan and being realistic are two different things. I'm sure Furcal said the same thing about loving Atlanta 3 years ago, yet the Dodgers offered him the most money per year, and he signed in LA.
Furcal saying he loves Torre and will take less money is akin to Sabathia saying he loves California and might take less money to play in the NL. All it takes it one team to make an insane offer and Furcal is gone, no matter how much he loves LA.
Posted by: DodgersBruin | November 04, 2008 at 08:02 PM
I don't see Furcal going to Detroit. If the $$$ is close or even in the vacinity, he stays in LA.
