« Mets Rumors: Castillo, Heilman, Putz | Main | Jacque Jones Hopes To Play In 2009 »
Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune says the Twins have yet to make a formal offer to Casey Blake, but they're making progress in discussions of the term and salary range. Blake's agent says eight clubs are interested but only four have discussed a contract.
Blake is looking for a three-year deal, and doesn't have any geographic leanings. The Indians, Dodgers, and Rangers are known to be in the mix. T.R. Sullivan believes Blake and Joe Crede are out of the Rangers' price range, however.

Surprised the Phillies haven't been mentioned with him yet (atleast from what I've seen). They're not exactly solid at 3B or LF (if Burrell leaves); Blake's versatility would probably be even more valuable to than most teams.

"to them than to most teams"

I'd rather see Beltre but Blake is solid and, in my opinion, better than Atkins or Kouz. Is there any chance that the Twins are that "mystery" team for Furcal?

Color me completely underwhelmed. Others have made the case for the same production from a Buscher/Harris platoon. If the next move is to re-sign Punto for short I give up.
Fortunately they're still at the thinking about possibly making a framework of some sort of plan for an offer of some type. Ugh.

Beltre in CBP could be a lot of fun to watch. Would be a nice RH bat to replace Burrell as well.

Blake has been a consistent player over his career but he'll be 35 and his production will start to decline during his next contract if he gets three years. He's perfectly suited to a super-utility role but he's going to get a starting 3B salary. He's in a great situation because there aren't that many alternatives.

How did this turn into a Philly discussion. They aren't even mentioned.

As long as he doesn't end up back in Cleveland, I'll be happy.

I'd rather see Crede and Furcal so we don't have to give up draft picks at all. That would be way better, and we have the money but they are too stubborn to fix things in house.

I mean not to fix things in house

Even though it may seem they are close to possibly making a signing worth any kind of significance off the FA market, I still wont believe it until I see it cause I don't want to be filled with false hope just like any other Winter just to end up signing scrubs.

I have an interesting question... could Atlanta make an offer for Blake? It might require Chipper to move to 1B, but he's getting up there in age and can't field third as well as he used to... Any Braves fans think he might fit in Atlanta?

shouldn't the phillies be trying to convince blake to play the outfield.... he really seems like he would excel in philly

we've got enough "Blake types", ie tough hard nosed grinders (Utley, Victorino, Werth, Dobbs and ROllins to an extent). And i don't want another utility guy, although he's really not. I want Magglio Ordonez or Jermaine Dye or just keep Burrell.
Ouch, I sound like Jerome from the Bronx.

"I want Magglio Ordonez or Jermaine Dye or just keep Burrell."
I really don't see Chicago moving Dye now that Swisher is out of there.
I could see one scenario: Dye for John Mayberry, one of Carrasco, Marson and Taylor, and a low level prospect.
KW would likely expect a haul for Dye after getting so little for Swish.
Posted by: scribbletone | November 21, 2008 at 12:23 PM
and that's my fault about him "selling" Swisher to the Yankees?
OK, if I've gotta give one of those I'll give Marson. Carassco's off limits (especially considering our record and trades including pitching with Williams) and Taylor COULD BE Ryan Howard Jr and D'arnaud while much younger could be as good or better than Marson when he develops.
Wait, Burrell and Marson or Dye. I'll keep Burrell and Marson.

The thing about the Twins' 3B situation is that the Buscher/Harris platoon wasn't great, but they weren't bad either. All the guys mentioned besides Beltre are only marginal upgrades that would require giving up a young pitcher or 3x the current combined salaries of Buscher/Harris, so it doesn't make much sense to mess with it.
The money and players are better used on a position where they can get a big upgrade like Hardy at SS.
Blake is old and average. Atkins is expensive (for the Twins) and average. Kouzmanoff is Carlos Gomez expect slow, bad at defense and might hit 20HR, otherwise they both K way too often and get on base 30% of the time at best.
Beltran is the real deal but too expensive for 1 year.
And I really don't understand why some of my fellow Twins fans want Furcal at SS, either. It would be like signing a slightly better Christian Guzman for 12MM a year.

*Beltre

There, we agree on something, Phils. Burrell, unless he's asking for some ridiculous number, easily makes the most sense for the Phillies. No loss of picks or prospects and he's right handed. No reason to let him walk.
Posted by: Not Joe Morgan | November 21, 2008 at 12:56 PM
If your going to talk about the Phillies, then go to a rumor about your team. It's really annoying.
Posted by: tonyjar0502 | November 21, 2008 at 12:59 PM
I'm not a Phillies fan and it stemmed from a mention of Casey Blake. If you want to pigeon-hole everything, go to a team message board. Being scolded for diverging a bit is annoying.

Also Kouzmanoff OPS+ a paltry 70 against LHP last season which instantly makes him a candidate for a platoon anyway, negating any benefit he may theoretically bring.

tonyjar0502,
ya get over it, its a free country.
thanks NJM,
ya the market for Burrell will be very little IMO. Someone at one point said 4 years and 60 million and i almost fell off my chair. How will he field in 4 years. They don't allow walkers in MLB stadiums.
oh and damon's still overpaid.
Appease him and go 2 years for 28 with a club option that WILL be bought out.
