Will Rockies Trade Atkins?

Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post sat down with Rockies infielder Garrett Atkins, who may be traded this winter.  Atkins is comfortable going year to year, even if it increases the chances of a trade.  He's under team control through 2010.

Renck mentions the Indians and Twins as suitors for Atkins.  Tracy Ringolsby believes Michael Cuddyer is on the Rockies' radar (Cuddyer is signed through '10 with an option for '11).

Fellow trade target Matt Holliday says Atkins can hit anywhere, though Atkins hit just .244/.303/.415 on the road over the last two seasons.

This has Kenny Williams written all over it. No one is talking about this and I could easily see the Sox making a move for Atkins at 3B

cuddy plus a b prospect for atkins would be ok by me

Atkins has some strange home/road splits. Even though his average is terrible on the road, he has hit more homers on the road in his career.

I think the Twins will end up getting Atkins. Especially if Holliday gets traded fairly quickly, the Rockies maybe in need for another OF to replace and ask for Cuddyer. Of course all that may depend on when and for how much Holliday gets moved for. If the Rox get an OF or two from the Phillies or my Cardinals, then they may not have a need for another Of, which may throw a wrench in the Atkins to Minnesota scenrio.

If the Twins want a poor-fielding 3B with a .710 OPS, I imagine Cuddyer is capable of at least that.

Hey Tim, where do you think Atkins will end up if he gets moved?

Look at Cuddyer's home/road's too. Maybe both should stay put LOL.

Could the White Sox be a possibility since it doesn't appear that Joe Crede will be resigned?

Atkins is one of the worst fielders in MLB. His splits suggest that his OPS in a fair park wouldnt crack .750. If anyone trades for him or Taveras for that matter...they deserve instant sack

Well for that fact that you presented, viktor06, Atkins needs to be traded to an AL team. That way when his fielding becomes unbearable, he can DH.

"If the Twins want a poor-fielding 3B with a .710 OPS, I imagine Cuddyer is capable of at least that."

Where did you get .710? And where did you get bad fielding? His fielding last year at 3rd was comparable to Beltre, Rolen, and Longoria. He has improved his defense quite a bit.

PS. Don't even think about comparing Atkins to the "Gold Glove" winner at third this year. Atkins has him beat.

The way people talk about him here its like he's chopped liver. I've seen him daily and though he had a poor year (who didn't for the Rox in 08?) I thinh he's pretty damn good player. Since no one wants to give up anything kKeep him and see if Stewart can play left.

I wouldnt want to be fan of the team that has Atkins at DH. But hey, Dayton Moore might jump all over it

mkorpal - you are the winner of the biggest Homer ever award.

plus/minus at 3B: Atkins -11
plus/minus at 1B: Atkins -10

"mkorpal - you are the winner of the biggest Homer ever award."

Why. lets compare Atkins 3B fielding to Wright's 3B fielding

Atkins 94G .964 fielding%, 2.76 RF, .787 ZR

Wright 159G, .962 fielding%, 2.51 RF, .765 ZR

The only reason Atkins was moved to 1st was because Helton missed the 2nd half of the season with a back injury. The perception that Atkins has terrible defense is simply false.

In 07 he played hot corner for the best fielding team in MLB history behind groundball pitchers like Cook, Fogg, and Francis.

He's far from bad.

Amazingly.. the baseball GM's that populate the comments section of this site have deemed Garrett Atkins as some schlub who's all thumbs with the leather that can't get the ball out of the infield outside of Coors Field.

Yet, he was a key member of the Rockies rise to the World Series in 2007. His value is less this year as the Rockies as he and his team, didn't fare as well as in 2007, but his career numbers are more than solid.

He's a career .298 batter with an above average arm that makes all the plays at whatever position he's asked to play, whether that be third base, second base, first base or even a few chances in Left Field

He's a team player that will make his team better. He'd look great with Chief Wahoo on his sleeve.

What say you?

3 posts - and none of you presents actual relevant stats? What an efficiency

Actual stats? You mean like RBIs?
5th among 3B in 2008
3rd among 3B in 2007
2nd among 3B in 2006

:D lol, I hope you are kidding with RBI. Anyway, I see from where you come. We will leave it there

How about a .964 fielding % in 08, which would have placed him about 7th in the league last year?

How about 75 hrs in 3 years?

Yeah. He really sucks.

Not sure why some still say Atkins' defense is bad. He is one of the best fielding 3B in the game. Rolen is the only guy who has an arm as strong as Atkins. In 07, he was tied for 2nd in the majors in double plays by a third baseman.

If Atkins is so slick at 3B, why did the Rox move him to 1B when Helton went down?

Sure, they wanted to get Stewart in the lineup every day, but they could have left Stewart at 2B and played Hawpe at first. And they didn't.

Because Stewart is not a 2nd basemen at all. It was an experiment to see if they could get him playing time, but it didn't work out. Also, not sure when the last time Hawpe payed 1st base, if at all. But Atkins had experience at the position before.

Wow. Please don't make comments on here when they are this absurb. Clearly you know nothing about the Rockies by saying this, so your opinion of Atkins should hold no value to anyone else on here who reads it.

First, Stewart wasn't playing 2B at this point in the season when Helton got hurt.
Second, we wanted to see how Stewart played everyday at 3rd so we could determine if we could afford to lose Atkins or not, so this situation worked out perfectly.
Third, Atkins played 1B full-time in college, whereas Hawpe only played there from time to time.
Fourth, Hawpe has one of the best arms in RF, so why would we take that out of RF.
Fifth, Atkins ability to go from 3B to 1B with no practice shows his fielding abilities.
I could go on and on, but I don't want to. But I hope most educated baseball fans realize the absurdity of this comment. You may not think Atkins is a great fielder, but you have to agree with me on that one.

I'm not an Atkins basher but I'm not an Atkins lover either. He'd be better than what the Indians are dealing with now and for the right price I wouldn't be upset. I still think he'll ultimately wind up at 1B and anybody who knows the Tribe knows that the last thing they need is another 1B (Garko, Aubrey, Mills, Brown, maybe Martinez, maybe LaPorta, maybe even Peralta some day). I really think the Tribe can do a lot better if they're patient and willing to give up a premium package of players.
