« Red Sox To Sign Tazawa? | Main | Angels Begin Talks With Sabathia »
9:24pm: I can't remember a day where so many rumors were floated and then debunked. The latest: Perez's agent and a source familiar with the team's thinking tell MLB.com's Bill Ladson that no multiyear deal is in the works with the Nationals.
4:06pm: ESPN's Enrique Rojas talked to free agent southpaw Odalis Perez, who said he has received offers from the Yankees, White Sox, and Nationals. Perez intends to stay with the Nationals, and his agent is working on a two or three-year deal with them.
Perez, 31, posted a 4.34 ERA in 159.2 innings for the Nats this year.

No thanks, he wasn't that great in the NL with no DH, so how would he be in the AL with a DH?
Posted by: Spieg7 | November 24, 2008 at 04:11 PM
I would expect Perez to be a solid 4/5 starter/long reliever option for any of those teams. He showed last season that he's still got something left, and at 31 he's still fairly young. I wouldn't give him three years, but on a deal like 2/10 with a team option at $6M and a $500K buyout, I think that'd be a solid risk for any of those teams.

i guess its good to have a plan ZZZ
Posted by: GeneralManager | November 24, 2008 at 04:13 PM
... wow, the Yanks are rumored to be in on pretty much every SP this offseason.
Posted by: GoTribe | November 24, 2008 at 04:15 PM
Yeah I can't see Odalis in pinstripes. I think he would get decimated in the AL East.
That being said, he's a good low risk, low $$ signing if he stays in the NL.

I'd been really excited if it was Oliver, but whatever

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
(YANKSFAN reaches for the bottle of pills labeled "IN CASE THE YANKS SIGN A WACK FREE AGENT PITCHER TAKE TWO") and drink with water.

Is he CC's best friend or something? Is he the twin brother of Oliver Perez and this is a ploy to entice him to sign with us? What the hell!!??
Is this "PLAN W part C"?
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | November 24, 2008 at 04:19 PM
Yeah, unless it's as a long reliever, I'm not sure the Yanks want to hold a press conference introducing Odalis Perez to the fans.
Posted by: Papelboner | November 24, 2008 at 04:22 PM
Yeah I'd like to specify that Perez would likely not be able to post an ERA under 4.75 in the AL, and a 5.00+ ERA would be likely. But in the NL I think he should be able to post a solid ERA and eat some innings.
Posted by: scribbletone | November 24, 2008 at 04:24 PM
I bet this report is false, that seems to be the theme today.
Posted by: Cardsfan387 | November 24, 2008 at 04:27 PM
Hey Tim,
This has nothing to do with Perez, but did we totally miss this rumor?
As I was reading faketeams.com, I came across this post.
Maybe I'm blind and did not see the MLBTR post, but anyways John Perrotto has a new post up for Baseball Prospectus.
Inside of the article, Perrotto mentions that "The Red Sox plan to outbid everyone, including the Yankees and Angels, for free-agent first baseman Mark Teixeira, unless someone comes in with an offer of $200 million or more."
I don't have the subscription, so I'm unaware of any more rumors.

I mean, Perez wasn't so bad when he was on the Dodgers, he just went downhill when he got injured then joined the Royals. He's not a bad 5th starter or long reliever. Adds Depth.

Hey Tim,
Was wondering why my recent post was just deleted. Are you not allowed to post a comment twice on the same thread?

I think lesson #1 when training to become a sports agent is to include the Yankees in every free agents bag of rumors to drive the price up.

I haven't deleted any comments today.
I am not sure about that Tex report...seems like it could be partially conjecture. If it was some kind of scoop it would make more sense as a lead item.

I bet you Cashman is sitting around scratching his head saying "Did I make an offer or place a call regarding ODALIS Perez?" Maybe Odaliz is floating names around because he quickly made it clear that he would prefer to come back to the mighty Nationals.

yankeesgirl:
Don't worry I bought enough for all of us..haha. I had a case of them left from 2006 when Zito, Meche, Padilla, etc were on the market.

Or maybe the Yankees are just making sure that they don't go into next season depending on Wang, Joba, Pettitte, Hughes, Kennedy and Aceves if they somehow don't let anyone. It's not the worst thing ever, unless it happens because there's no CC, A.J. or Lowe.
Posted by: scribbletone | November 24, 2008 at 04:53 PM
If he went to the Yanks, they'd probably DFA him in a month. He'd get slaughtered in that division.
Forget CC, Odalis Perez FTW!!!
Posted by: bigpat | November 24, 2008 at 05:03 PM
Yeah I guess depth means something but I think we already have in house guys that can put up the same number as Odalis probably wood (5.00 era/150-170 innings).
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | November 24, 2008 at 05:05 PM
wow...would. lol
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | November 24, 2008 at 05:06 PM
Why would the White Sox be looking at Perez? They already have 2 lefties in the rotation and one possibly ready to contribute.
I don't believe this rumor.

WTF is with the Yankees obsession for mediocre and borderline minor-league pitchers?
Posted by: InvalidUserID | November 24, 2008 at 07:23 PM
I think this would be a very low risk move for the sox. They need another starter and if we can sign him for nothing I say why not.
Posted by: ChiSoxKilla23 | November 24, 2008 at 10:06 PM
Eh, looks like I was right...it was a false report, what does that make now...4 or 5 for the day?
Posted by: Cardsfan387 | November 24, 2008 at 10:59 PM
Damn... 4 or 5 false reports... one would think that's statistically unlikely. Same source screwing with people?
As for Odalis Perez... I will become a religious man if the yanks sign Perez with the belief that he'll be an effective number 5 starter. He's this year's Livan Hernandez, will get a couple of mil because some team believes he'll be okay just eating up innings.

Cards make an offer to Arthur Rhodes.

Personally, I'd love to see the Yanks sign Odalis perez. He'd be a great BP pitcher for the rest of the league with that crap he throws. If he is smart, he'll stay in the NL, that guy is mediocre in the NL only, he comes to the east and it's back to signing minor league contracts and trying to find a job once again.
Posted by: johns | November 24, 2008 at 11:40 PM
We all know Odalis Perez is going back to the dodgers!
