I like this idea. Cheap one year deal for a BOR innings eater. The Jays obviously don't need an ace.

I thought AJ talked to Carl about the Yanks. Maybe Carl asked AJ a little about Toronto, too.

I hope Pavano stays in the AL East and the yanks get a chance for some BP off him.

A lot of people liked these moves but a lot also hated signing Ohka and Victor Zambrano (wasted a few million). Isn't it roughly the same?
Hopefully it works if it gets done as it could get ugly....

Ok, what would it take the Reds to get Rios? Pitching prospects?

Okha and Zambrano were reasonable low-cost gambles.
Fans mock them in hindsight for a cheap laugh but there wasn't anything wrong with the gamble they took there.
Pavano enjoys at least one advantage over those two though, he has a good working history with the Jays pitching coach (as does Brad Penny)

Can someone explain to me why B.Abreu doesn't have a contract by now? The guy has done some good work for us, he loves NY, and has been a positive part of the chemistry. And although we know he can play better than he has lately, his numbers are respectable and he's a tough out to opposing pitchers because his skill level commands respect at the dish!- pay the dude, every1 else is eating and getting fat!

My thoughts exactly, Gmbling.
I said last year that the Reds should forget about exercising Dunn's option and, instead, go after Rios. But Ca$htellini just LOVED Dunn so that didn't happen. Plus, the Giants wouldn't give up Lincecum for Rios and Toronto wouldn't take anything less for him.
Now, however, in a bad economy, the Blue Jays Owner just dying, them losing Burnett and finishing low in the AL as far as Offense goes, they might be willing to trade Rios so as to get some young Pitching (Bailey) and free up cash for signing some Offense.
So, forget Maglio Ordonez and Jermaine Dye and focus on a real player that CAN help the Reds for the next four years.

Rios isn't even in the expensive years of his contract yet. Trading him wouldn't free up much money, and the Jays would still be short a COF/DH, and if anyone got hurt they'd have no insurance.

Torgen,
With Rogers dying, the world economy tanking, the US dollar strenghthening agaisnt the Canadian dollar and the Jays being Offensively challenged and playing in the AL East, they are going to have to do something.
They are probably losing Burnett so that hurts in one way but helps in another. It hurts that they are losing a good Pitcher but helps in that it frees up money for them to look for help on the Free Agent market.
Now if the Jays were to trade Rios for Bailey and ??, then the Jays would be dumping a large, long term contract and picking up a young, inexpensive Pitcher who still might turn out to be something good. Plus, they would have him under team control for maybe five or six more years.
With that money freed up, the Jays could go after Pitchers like Lowe or Sheets and also an Outfielder like Burrell or Abreu and still be able to fill in some holes elsewhere.

Does it really make sense to trade away a pre-free agent contract to free up money to sign a free agent to play the same position? Rios's $6MM now is a good deal, and the $12MM he'll be making in later years is no more than you'd be paying a free agent for those years, but the free agent would be a lot older by that point. Also, Rios has a FNTC.

I think Pavano will be an excellent candidate for the jays....i mean he didnt wow too many people in NY but i think he'll get a better chance with TO...I think a lot of people that get signed by the Yankees, especially pitchers, tend not to do too well....mainly cause they get too dependent on the big Yankees line up to bail them out....but with other teams they don't have that big line up so they have to try harder....I know this may sound like an elementary school theory but it could very well be the case....
Now...as far as for how much will he sign with the Jay....I just pray its not more than 8 mil a season.....cause he's not worth more than that....
