« Tigers Acquire Gerald Laird | Main | Red Sox Rumors: Bloomquist, Lugo, Varitek »
According to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Cardinals GM John Mozeliak recently shifted his focus from trades to free agency in regards to his pitching staff. They briefly mulled the idea of jumping in on Jake Peavy but decided against it.
Strauss suggests four free agent starters the Cardinals might consider signing for the short-term: Oliver Perez, Andy Pettitte, Randy Wolf, and Brad Penny. The Cards have about $15-17MM to work with, but they won't be chasing the big fish free agent starters.
Straus adds that it now looks like the Cardinals will retain second baseman Adam Kennedy.

Why woul;d the Cardinals think they can get Perez "For the Short Term", he figures to get at least 3 years from someone, likely 4.

This is def. the most frustrating thing being a Cardinals fan is year after year having to only have one or two good players and then cast offs or guys who have been injured their whole career and the Cardinals are naive enough to believe this is the year they will put it together. Why wouldn't the Cardinals want to go after Peavy he would be under team control for at least 3 more years he is entering his prime in my opinion I'd rather have an established all-star/cy-young pitcher than a few prospects who MAY turn out to be good. By the way my prediction for Ludwick this upcoming season
.274 BA 18 HR 75 RBI, anyone who thinks he is going to do what he did last year is insane!

I disagree. With the raise in salaries there is a greater need to lean on your farm system (esp. for teams not in NY, Chi, LA Boston). Giving up what we'd have to give to get Peavy just is not worth it. We do need more pitching but this is not the way.
Ludwick will probably fall inbetween your projection and last year's numbers. If he can repeat last year I'd be impressed...but not likely. 25-30 HR, .270-.280, 80-90 RBI would be good from him.
