The Giants have signed Randy Johnson to a one year deal, the team announced in a press release. Andrew Baggarly and Ken Rosenthal were both right on this one.
MLB.com's Chris Haft heard from a baseball source that the deal guarantees the Big Unit $8MM in 2009 and includes performance bonuses that could reach $2.5MM and award bonuses that could reach another $2.5MM. The AP agrees.
Johnson joins fellow-Cy Young Award winners Tim Lincecum and Barry Zito in a San Francisco rotation that also includes Matt Cain and Jonathan Sanchez. It's hard not to like the signing for the Giants; R.J. Anderson considers it a steal.

stinkin ned colletti, he would of been a perfect fit ont the dodgers. DAMMIT!
Posted by: NedCollettiClueless | December 26, 2008 at 08:49 PM
Would've been a perfect fit for a lot of teams...
Nice move by the Giants assuming it's for a reasonable price.
Posted by: Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 26, 2008 at 08:52 PM
Yeah, very disappointed as a Dodger fan. I am sort of clueless as to what pitcher(s) they'll target now. Maybe they'll focus their efforts towards Wolf or Pettitte.
Posted by: cheba63 | December 26, 2008 at 08:53 PM
Damn. Now I'm going to have to root for the Giants every 5th day.
Posted by: MPM | December 26, 2008 at 08:55 PM
Very, very good signing for the Giants. The NL west just got a whole lot tighter. This is the perfect piece to get them through the year without over commiting until Bumgarner, Alderson, and Pucetas are ready.
Posted by: Nuschler's News | December 26, 2008 at 08:56 PM
Lincecum
Cain
Randy
Zito
Sanchez
Is that a top 5 rotation in baseball? Maybe not, but it's close.
Posted by: supermets | December 26, 2008 at 08:56 PM
I really thought Ned would get RJ in Dodger Blue. I can't imagine who Colletti will bring in now. Does he take the trade route?>
Posted by: jskohl | December 26, 2008 at 08:56 PM
You think they try to trade Sanchez for a bat now? Last time I heard they had a very solid rotation.
Posted by: yankfan1 | December 26, 2008 at 08:57 PM
I think the Dodgers will sign Petitte now, especially given his history with Joe Torre
Posted by: Nuschler's News | December 26, 2008 at 08:57 PM
Agree with Ben. A nice fit for several teams. He indicated that he wanted to stay on the West Coast early on and that is where he is going to play. A good move and fits Sabean's age requirements all in one.
Could be a dangerous team with some offense.
Posted by: studio179 | December 26, 2008 at 08:58 PM
Giants might have a shot at the west this year.
Posted by: nextdaytonmoore | December 26, 2008 at 08:58 PM
Giants rotation >>> Dodgers Rotation
Posted by: NedCollettiClueless | December 26, 2008 at 08:59 PM
very solid signing Mr. Sabean
now lets go sign or trade for a good hitter to put in the middle of that lineup (Nady? Swisher? Manny? Dunn? Burrell?)
Posted by: Bleacher_bum_SF | December 26, 2008 at 08:59 PM
Great fit for the Giants. Hopefully he can reach the 300 wins total with them. Does this signing either propel the Dodgers to pursue Pettitte or will the Giants look to trade a Noah Lowry or John Sanchez for some hitting?
Posted by: Rolling{Night}Hawk{09} | December 26, 2008 at 09:00 PM
This is a good call for them. Randy provides a good veteran presence in the clubhouse and a ton of fans will we want to come see the Big Unit get 300 Ws.
Posted by: BravoMan | December 26, 2008 at 09:01 PM
if randy and zito can find another gear, giants have a shot at the title this year. unless the dodgers secure manny and a good starter, as of right now, the giants are better on paper now
Posted by: 04Forever | December 26, 2008 at 09:01 PM
Yeah, cause pitching was the Giant's biggest weakness...
Even with pitching, you still need to score runs to win a game. I thought they would've seen that from last year's performance.
Maybe the Giants might sign/trade for an actual DECENT hitter.
Posted by: strikethree | December 26, 2008 at 09:02 PM
Awesome move by the Giants.
Posted by: astralpanda | December 26, 2008 at 09:02 PM
I still don't think they trade Sanchez, at least not yet. The Giants value Sanchez very high and want a young proven corner infielder for him, who can play defense as well as hit and is signed for more then next year. I'm not certain they will find that at all this offseason as it may take another year off Sanchez starting for him to build his value in other teams eyes to that level.
I think the Giants would sweeten the deal to get the guy they want this year. Someone like Ryan Zimmerman or Chris Davis. I'm not sure those guys will be made available at all though.
Posted by: Nuschler's News | December 26, 2008 at 09:02 PM
Damnit. I wanted the A's to sign him.
If Noah Lowry is healthy, that means Zito goes to the pen.
This could be entertaining.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 26, 2008 at 09:04 PM
Let me speak for all A's fans when I say:
DAMN IT!
Posted by: PL | December 26, 2008 at 09:05 PM
yeah now maybe we can dangle Sanchez for a Bat to get some damn RUN SUPPORT for these pitchers...
Posted by: seanyt1 | December 26, 2008 at 09:06 PM
haha JINX!
re: the first point: Or Sanchez/Cain get traded.
Posted by: PL | December 26, 2008 at 09:06 PM
Nuschler's News-
The Giants should NOT sell low on Jonathan Sanchez. Any trade made this year would probably be a sell low, simply because his ERA was significantly worse than his peripherals indicated. In other words, he pitched like a 3, but ran into some bad luck/bad defense.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 26, 2008 at 09:06 PM
man, if the giants can afford manny, he'd be PERFECT in a place like san francisco. he could do whatever he wanted, they'd love it all.
Posted by: i_spit_hot_fire | December 26, 2008 at 09:07 PM
If Noah Lowry shows he's healthy come spring, I think the Giants make him and Sanchez available but that's a big if. Even if he is healthy, his Trade Value is low due to the injury. He'll need the first half to show he can still pitch and then may be attractive come the trade deadline as his contract is expiring.
I think the FA market needs to dry up some before the Giants make a trade involving Sanchez so they can better assess the other teams actual needs and what they would be willing to give up.
Posted by: Nuschler's News | December 26, 2008 at 09:07 PM
They're still not going to get full value for him, which is a big selling point with Sanchez. I think that any Sanchez trade will be mistake on the Giants' part. If I'm Sabean, I sit on the pitching depth, move Zito to the pen if Lowry comes back and starts the season healthy (let Lowry make some starts to increase his trade value), then trade Lowry at the deadline when someone gets desperate for pitching.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 26, 2008 at 09:09 PM
Melonis Rex- I totally agree with you. The Giants should not trade low on Sanchez at all. His Value will be much higher after 1 more season, as will Matt Cain's and the Giants will probably looking at quite a surplus of starting pitching (is there really such a thing) come next winter as both Madison Bumgarner and Tim Alderson will probably be pushing close to a major league job, if they haven't already got a september callup. Kevin Pucetas and Jose Martinez might also be in the mix.
Noah Lowry and Randy Johnson will be FA next year so on paper the Giants will have only 1 open spot. And really, this team is built to win next season and the year after so anything they do this year is a bonus.
All I'm saying is if the Giants do get an offer they can't refuse, like Zimmerman or Davis, they might have to take it. That wouldn't be selling low this year. Now, I don't really expect that to happen but both those teams are in dire need of pitching and they have a lot of young hitting...
Posted by: Nuschler's News | December 26, 2008 at 09:14 PM
Pablo Sandoval put up great numbers last year. I hear he can play C/1B/3B. If this is so slot him in at 3B i think he deserves at shot based on his upside and the numbers he posted last year....
AVG: .345
HR: 3
RBI: 24
OBP: .357
SLG: 490
OPS: .847

there's absolutely NO WAY Zito starts off the 2009 season in the bullpen even if Lowry is healthy
Now, if Zito has a horrible start to the season like last year and Lowry is pitching decent (if healthy)then maybe Zito gets moved to the pen
Posted by: Bleacher_bum_SF | December 26, 2008 at 09:17 PM
A mix of Renteria 07 and Renteria 08 and the Giants promise not to letting Bocock, Ochoa, or Vizquel take an at bat next year they just might win the NL West easy.
Aaron Miles at 1.5 million.
300 AB from Rocco Baldelli at 3 million.
Thats the division.
Posted by: ArodSucksAtLife | December 26, 2008 at 09:18 PM
Defense might stop Sandoval from playing 3B. That guy is huge.
"All I'm saying is if the Giants do get an offer they can't refuse, like Zimmerman or Davis, they might have to take it. That wouldn't be selling low this year."
Oh yeah. If the offer is right, take it.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 26, 2008 at 09:20 PM
I know the guy is huge but according to espn's depth chart he is listed as their starting third baseman. If it were up to me, he would play 1B because everyone knows thats where the fat kid plays =]
Posted by: Rolling{Night}Hawk{09} | December 26, 2008 at 09:24 PM
Why the hell would the Nationals trade Ryan Zimmerman? For ANYBODY! He is one of the best, if not the best, defensive third basemen in the league and has huge potential at the plate. Oh, and by the way, he's only 24 years old. And he's the face of the franchise.
Posted by: Gvelta | December 26, 2008 at 09:24 PM
Wow. That rotation is def top five IMO. Great signing.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | December 26, 2008 at 09:26 PM
Just because Sandoval has played 3B doesn't mean that's where he should play or they want him to play there. I know Sabean has said it's his spot but he's said that about others recently as well. In October he said SS was Burriss' and now we have Renteria! Last offseason he said 1B was Dan Ortmeiers' and come spring it was Rich Aurulia.
I don't think 3B is Sabean's first choice for Sandoval and would rather have him at 1B but the market is thin right now. We'll see how the rest of the winter plays out but it may change.
Posted by: Nuschler's News | December 26, 2008 at 09:28 PM
That is a very solid rotation they got there. If they can just get some more pop in that lineup, I think they have a great chance to win the division.
Posted by: ramaboy28 | December 26, 2008 at 09:29 PM
hte giants rotation is great
but not top 5 in the league
timmy is a freak
cain is good
but...
sanchez is wild, but can improve
zito is a name, he not that good. he only look good on paper because of his history
and johnson..is a nice pitcher and an great mentor
(i think) to Johnny boy. but not as good as made out to be, lately.
the rotation is not as reliable depth-wised as you think. but on paper, they look good
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | December 26, 2008 at 09:29 PM
I really, really think the Giants should vest it all into a contending effort this year and trade for Beltre. He is the perfect combination of bat and defense, and he would be a bigger upgrade at 3B. Then, either let Sandoval play 1B and sign an OF bat or trade Molina for an OF bat, let Sandoval catch, and go with a Ishikawa/Phelps platoon at 1B. I think the latter might give you production since you're not sacrificing much production at 1B and C, and still adding an OF.
The A's fan in me is going to say the Giants shouldn't give up Alderson or Bumgarner.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 26, 2008 at 09:30 PM
Best rotation in baseball.
Sandoval will play, but I'd rather see him play 3rd and have Ishikawa play first. Ish is strong defensively, and you'll need that anchor is Sandoval at 3rd is a stretch, over a full season, and Renteria has lost a step, and a rookie is playing 2nd (Frandsen).
$8 million is more than I thought Randy would get. A possible $12 million is about twice more than I thought possible for him. Maybe Sabes convinced the new guy that he'd put fannies in the seats. Because it seems like the Giants are on a spending spree.
Posted by: The Management | December 26, 2008 at 09:31 PM
"Why the hell would the Nationals trade Ryan Zimmerman? For ANYBODY!"
I agree. The Nats won't trade Ryan Zimmerman. Worst time to do it, in terms of PR and the fact that his injury would make the trade a sell-low.

Gvelta- I think it would take a lot for the Nats to trade Zimmerman but I don't think he is untradeable. He may be now after missing out on Teixeria but he fact is they still need pitching, bad. Zimmerman could fetch an ace, and a young one at that. Like a Matt Cain, or maybe a Jonathan Sanchez AND pitching prospects, which the Giants have.
I know it's not a popular idea around Nationals fans but the fact is he is arbitration elegible now and what if he decides not to sign that extension this off season? He could bring back the best return for them
Posted by: Nuschler's News | December 26, 2008 at 09:34 PM
these really means that cain and sanchez are more available to trade for sluggers like uggla and cantu
BTW
Zimmerman is not an offensive threat, and if that your face of your franchise then you guys really need Dunn

Or, instead of trading for Beltre, sign Orlando Hudson to play 2B and let Sandoval play 3B. Fits Sabean's MO perfectly. Although we all know how Sabean can f-ck up a Hudson signing.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 26, 2008 at 09:35 PM
For all of those throwing Chris Davis's name out there, keep dreaming.
Posted by: skyharbor215 | December 26, 2008 at 09:39 PM
I'd say they're easily top five IF healthy. If Unit can throw 160-170 IP, he's one of the better pitchers in the league. Pair that with perhaps the best in the league in Lince, one of the best young pitchers in the game in Cain, Sanchez, and Zito as your five, and I think you have a great staff.

but i do have a man crush on tim

LOL sorry i mean Johnathan Sanchez. I have been drinking quite a bit during the hollidays and im just recollecting myself.
Posted by: Rolling{Night}Hawk{09} | December 26, 2008 at 09:47 PM
Honestly, I think if they can get Wiggy on a 1-2 year deal, they would be better off than trading for Beltre. I can't imagine the Mariners are going to let him go very cheaply and he isn't worth any of the top pitching prospects or Sanchez for 1 year.
Cantu, Blaylock, Encarcion, and Crede all should be out of the question no matter what as none are a 3B upgrade overall to Sandoval when you factor in what the Giants will have to also give up to get them.
I really think they should take it slow and unless a team gives them an offer they can't refuse, they sit tight until at least close to the trade deadline and reevaluate then.

Then they are pretty much the best team in the NL.

They still would have a hole at 2B and either 3B or 1B (whichever isn't manned by Sandoval). Zito is still garbage, Sanchez is wildly inconsistent, Johnson is a major health risk.
They'd be much improved, and probably the best team in the West... but FAR from the best team in the entire National League.

The Giants should look hard at making a trade for Nick Swisher from the Yankees. I'm not sure what it'll take to get him but it can't be too much. They need some relief help, backup infielding, a fifth starter, and to restock the minors. Maybe something along the lines of Jose Martinez, Jack Taschner, and Eugenio Velez plus maybe the last year of Dave Roberts for Swisher and Cash.
Posted by: Nuschler's News | December 26, 2008 at 10:18 PM
lincecum over nolasco
johnson over cain
volstad over johnson
john sanchez over anibal sanchez
miller over zito
zito stuck, miller will get better
also the marlins play in the loaded east
while the giants play in bigger park and the no offense west where every park is huge

Yeah, I know Crede is a FA. I just meant to throw him in with the "Stay the Hell away from this player" no matter what. Signing him is not an upgrade to giving the job to Sandoval
Posted by: Nuschler's News | December 26, 2008 at 10:20 PM
volstad and johnson did not even start the whole year
you proved yourself wrong lol
Posted by: Bleacher_bum_SF | December 26, 2008 at 10:22 PM
People are getting a little crazy here.
Johnson is a nice back of the rotation starter. Gives you a near 4 ERA and most likely 130-150 IP. The real question will be his motivation once he hits 5 more wins.
Until Sanchez can put up a WHIP under 1.45 I'm not quite ready to anoint him as a top starter. Cain is a nice #2 and Lincecum is sick. Lowry and Zito ... at this point they are nothing more than warm bodies.
And for those saying Zimmerman is untouchable ... please. There are about 30 players right now I would rather have than Zimmerman. We are 3 full years into his career and he has exactly ONE season where he posted an OPS above 800. He MIGHT turn out to be great. However, I know other players that are already great.
Posted by: bjsguess | December 26, 2008 at 10:23 PM
theres no way josh johnson is better than Matt Cain
miller had a worse ERA than Zito
ill give you volstad over big unit but not by much
Posted by: Bleacher_bum_SF | December 26, 2008 at 10:25 PM
Good sign for the Giants. I'm not sure why so many teams took this long to sign the guy. He's a good #3-4 on any team. I think the DOdgers need to take a look at both Pettite and Sheets now.
Billingsley
Kershaw
Huroda
Sheets
Pettitte
That's pretty damn good on paper.

look at the stats johnson outperform cain

i know im really bullshitting it. but there pretty even, miller and zito is a toss up
making the scoreboard 2-2-1
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | December 26, 2008 at 10:40 PM
bjsguess- you are right, Sanchez still needs to prove himself. Period. He needs another season of experience. He is more valuable to the Giants than anyone else right now.
What most people don't know is he was bounced between the bullpen and spot starts, and the minors and majors, for a few seasons and never found any consistency. Now that he has settled into a starting role, he has begun to shine. I think last year was very telling, the difference between his first half and second half was remarkable and showed all signs of being tired as a factor. the guy had 8 career starts before last season, when he had 29. In 2006 he had 55/40 minor/major league innings, in 2007 he had 23/52 innings. Last year he more than doubled his total to 158 innings. I think he still has a lot to prove but has shown the ability to be very affective.
Between his natural progression, the Randy Johnson signing, and Cain and Lincecum, Giants fans have every reason to be excited that the rotation is shaping up to pitch with anyone.

with more run support Cain should have easily been 14-8 instead of 8-14 and outperform josh johnson
Hopefully Cainer's bad luck will change with the acquisition of a solid middle of order bat
Posted by: Bleacher_bum_SF | December 26, 2008 at 10:47 PM
if the giants can score then johnson will get 12, but they wont score. trade for cantu!

no thanks to Cantu
maybe Uggla
give me Nady, Swisher, Dunn, Wigginton or burrell over cantu
Pablo Sandoval alone will definitely give the G-men more runs and so will a healthy Fred Lewis and a less pressured Aaron Rowand

NO WAY Uggla is worth Cain
maybe sanchez and a pitching prospect not named bumgarner or alderson
and Dolphin stadium is not that small of a park either

Uggla could be a centerpiece but ugh itl take more than that. Cain has ace like stuff.

1. lincecum
2. cain
3. big unit
4. sanchez
5. zito
i may hate zito, but that is actually a pretty strong rotation 1-5.

at t is bigger and that has been reports of uggla/cain trade so stop pmsing it possible, it a rumor
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | December 26, 2008 at 11:09 PM
that rumor was from October and was never even confirmed by Brian Sabean
do you really think uggla is worth Matt Cain?
Posted by: Bleacher_bum_SF | December 26, 2008 at 11:13 PM
I still can't believe Rosenthal was right lol. And if I were San Fransisco I'd hold onto Cain and Lincecum for as long as I could.

no but uggla is going to take alot. sanchez with another top prospect, the marlins always want a pitcher in a trade. i know the giants have great pitchers other than bumberger and alderson. but im totally bullshitting now and i prob look like an idoit but i honestly think giants and marlins rotation are evenly matched, with a slight giant edge

don't be surprised by the dodgers failure here. after all, the dodgers suck and johnson said he wants to play for a contender :-)
I think the Giants should look more seriously at Wigginton.

Honestly, idk how much they have left to spend but if they got say burell or dun to play 1st maybe sign crede hes still out there i think for 3b and they would then be able to field a decent offense i think good rotation not the best defense, but not horrible, then roll the dice for some releivers maybe trade, not sure for who, hoffman is still out there? idk they could form a pretty solid team!

Here is what I think the giants should do:
1. Keep their rotation as is going into spring trading (don't trade sanchez for EE or cantu)
2. I like the competition at second base (burres, Frandsen, velez) because it gives us more infield options if more than one of them performs well, meaning NO melonis rex we should NOT sign Orlando Hudson.
3. I've been thinking about it, and I've decided power right now is in the outfield so I think we should move Lewis, Rowand, or Winn (Fred will probably be easiest) and sign Burrell or Manny to play Left Field.
Trade Lewis for a couple of unproven players for our farm system, sign manny and next year's team looks like:
Winn RF
Renteria SS
Sandoval 3B
Ramirez LF
Molina C
Isikawa/Phelps 1B
Rowand CF
Burres (my favorite)/Frandsen/Velez 2B
Lincecum
Cain
Johnson
Zito
Sanchez

Giants got a lot better today.
They are still 1 big bat away from being the team to beat in the NL West.
Nice signing.

ok so after looking at how much they were projected to have to spend burrell and dunn look to far out there...but i like the wigginton ideas, crede, nomar? millar?sexson?all may come cheap with some potential?
