« Red Sox Reach Deals With Bard, Penny | Main | Chass On Collusion »
MONDAY, 7:49am: According to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, the Orioles reached an agreement with Hendrickson. The O's still want to add another starter.
SUNDAY, 10:26pm: Spencer Fordin of MLB.com adds information about how Hendrickson will help the Orioles. Fordin writes how Hendrickson's presence will allow prospects more time to develop in the minor leagues.
Fordin also mentions that Baltimore has reportedly been in close negotiations to land Japanese free-agent pitcher Kenshin Kawakami.
8:59pm: Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com is reporting that free-agent pitcher Mark Hendrickson and the Baltimore Orioles are working on a deal to bring the starter to Baltimore.
The announcement, pending a physical, is slated for early this week.
Hendrickson has played with four different franchises since 2002, Kubatko wrote. The 6-foot-9 left-hander is 50-63 with a 5.07 ERA in 215 career games. He was 7-8 with a 5.45 ERA with the Florida Marlins in 2008.

Could of been a good power foward in the NBA.

Tim,
You forgot to mention that Hendrickson played in the NBA
Posted by: Dave from Louisville | December 28, 2008 at 09:55 PM
supermets,
He was being sarcastic about the typo, his point was that Hendrickson is not much of a starter.
Posted by: jlowrance | December 28, 2008 at 09:59 PM
HAHAHA at typo comment #2.
Hendrickson is garbage - how is he getting deals? Wasn't even offered arbitration two years ago.

"Hendrickson is garbage - how is he getting deals? Wasn't even offered arbitration two years ago."
I think baseball teams just seem to think every freakishly tall pitcher will be Randy Johnson, or at least a Jon Rauch or Chris Snyder. Also, Hendrickson was non-tendered in 2007, not 2006, AFAIK.

I feel really bad for teams like the Orioles and Blue Jays in the AL East having to compete with the Yankees, Red Sox, and Rays. They think they have no chance to compete so they sign pitchers off the garbage heap like this.

The Blue Jays and Orioles have market advantages over the Rays, with the Jays actually having an advantage over the whole division other than the Yankees, and may well have the richest ownership in the division. It is how the teams have been run, not the potential.

"the Jays actually having an advantage over the whole division other than the Yankees, and may well have the richest ownership in the division"
true. but to be fair, the yankees also have the backing of the city and its mayor. it's kinda like the person at your office that drives a nicer car than everyone because on top of his higher salary, his rich parents have endowed him with a trust fund

the orioles and blue jays also have not had the advantage of a decade's worth of top five picks. they are victims of their .500 records. they always pick in the middle of the pack. they never had access to the can't-miss bj uptons and david prices of the world

I guess he's the cheapest innings-eater out there, if you could even call him that.
He looks a lot like a taller version of John Smoltz, maybe they seen a head shot of him and called his agent.

FWIW, both Matusz and Wieters were Orioles top-5 picks, and it looks like they were pretty good picks. Markakis was the Orioles seventh pick in the 2003 draft as well.
What has made the Rays special isn't the draft alone. Without getting the gift of Kazmir from the Mets and the gift of Carlos Pena suddenly reaching his all-star potential, the Rays wouldn't be a contender, even with Longoria and Upton.

rays fan have a good nickname for this guy...the tallest guy to never throw 90 MPH (I believe Cork Gaines over at raysindex uses that one)...Lurch was very respectable in the AL East a couple of years ago and is great as just a stop gap

Hendrickson is a GREAT relief pitcher. He was amazing in the Dodgers bullpen in 2007. He's not a good starter. But teams keep putting him in the rotation. If he was signed as a reliever, he'd flourish.

""Typo?"

Seriously? The word "over" and "head" come to mind here.
Posted by: vtadave | December 29, 2008 at 01:01 AM
Not a bad signing. He isn't good by any means, but no team can have too many arms that can at least pitch some innings. You can expect about five and a half innings and a bit under four runs per outing from Hendrickson. That gives you at least a chance to win when he takes the mound.
Plus, since he has had success in the pen, if one of the O's young guys in the minors proves himself to be ready, you can slide Hendrickson into the pen to make room for the young guy in the rotation.

WHO FRIGGIN' CARES!
...And I'm an O's fan.
Mark Hendrickson?!
We'd have been better off with Cabrera, I think! Oh well. None of it matters. We're all just waiting on a few of the young arms to 'pop.' Only then will we make any kind of noise in the division. Tillman, Matusz, Arrieta, Erbe, Olson, Liz, Patton, Hernandez, Bergeson, Britton, Bundy, Butler, Beato (unless last year was the real Beato, in which case, scratch him), Spoone, Justin Moore, and maybe someone out of the Chris Salberg, Cole McCurry, Luis Noel, Rick Zagone, Pat Egan- bunch... That's where our "real" rotation is going to derive from. And that ain't happening overnight! 'Til then, the rest of the East is gonna tee off on whatever crappy castoffs we sign.
Posted by: milehigh78 | December 29, 2008 at 12:18 PM
Well O's fans looks like we will have someone with the first name Mark next year on the field... just not the one we wanted...
Career Numbers vs. AL East are horrible and that was without Arod and now TEX
Way to go Andy and Peter A your having the best off season in the history of the franchise with signings like Mark freakin Hendrickson.... what a waste.....

Take it from a Marlins fan:
Bum in the rotation,
Moderate to good in the 'pen
