« Red Sox In Talks For Brian Schneider? | Main | Blue Jays To Meet With Pavano's Agent »
11:02pm: Jim Salisbury backs up the idea that the Phils could receive DeRosa and the Padres could get Happ. It's worth noting that the Cubs could trim $5.5MM off the payroll by sending out DeRosa and using Fontenot at second base.
10:31pm: MLB.com's Lyle Spencer says the Angels have not taken themselves out of the Peavy sweepstakes.
Also, Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune supplies more info. A third team would definitely be involved in a Cubs trade. DeRosa could wind up a Phillie, and Michael Wuertz is a new name of interest for the Padres. Peavy's agent Barry Axelrod said again that Peavy will require a full no-trade clause upon a deal. One more thing - Towers said trading Peavy could free up money for Trevor Hoffman.
9:00pm: MLB.com's Corey Brock says the legwork on this trade "has essentially been completed." No deal has been reached, but Towers says he's facilitated a three or possibly four-team deal. The third and possibly fourth teams (Orioles, Phillies) have agreed to players. There could be some haggling remaining on players sent from the Cubs to Padres.
Brock says all Towers needs now is the go-ahead from Hendry. Peavy, by the way, was spotted at the Meetings.
8:35pm: Jayson Stark gives his take on the Peavy-Cubs situation. He says Hendry is dealing with restrictions due to the team's ownership situation, despite his comments.
8:01pm: Scott Miller of CBSSports.com says Jason Marquis and Angel Guzman (among others) could end up with the Padres in the three-team deal. The Padres could get J.A. Happ and/or Chris Coste from the Phils. Miller adds that the Phils are known to have interest in Mark DeRosa.
6:53pm: Rosenthal says the Phillies are now in the mix as a possible third team in a Peavy trade. Those talks are preliminary. Rosenthal says the Cubs can't complete a deal for Peavy until their new owner is decided.
5:33pm: Roch Kubatko says the O's are still interested in Pie, but may only get him for Olson straight up if Olson is to be flipped to San Diego in a Peavy trade.
2:37pm: Joel Sherman learned from Towers that if he doesn't reach an agreement on a Peavy deal with the Cubs at the Meetings, he will keep the pitcher to start the season. The Dodgers are apparently the only other team to which Peavy has approved a trade.
Sherman adds that the Cubs "are willing to let [Peavy] keep his no-trade clause." Not sure if Sherman is trying to say the Cubs would replace Peavy's partial no-trade rights for 2011 and part of 2012 with full no-trade powers.
2:33pm: Kevin Towers told Ken Rosenthal he's talking to only the Cubs about Peavy. He expects to have a good idea on whether to drop it or move forward by the end of the Meetings. Towers approached Ned Colletti but talks didn't get far.
12:22pm: Jerry Crasnick says Kevin Towers and Peavy's agent Barry Axelrod drove together for the 4.5 hour ride from San Diego to Las Vegas, but Axelrod says they only talked about Peavy for about three minutes. Also, Axelrod brought a sweet mix CD.
11:44am: Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald says the Cubs and Padres did not talk about Peavy on Sunday but will today. He's heard the Padres might be concerned with Vitters' hand/wrist.
1:14am: Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times says the Cubs first want to trade Jason Marquis and acquire their left-handed hitting outfielder before Peavy. Wittenmyer's sources do believe the Cubs will eventually acquire San Diego's ace. However, his sources say the Tom Krasovic report about a five-for-one framework being in place is exaggerated.
Wittenmyer hears that the Orioles would be willing to swap Garrett Olson for Felix Pie; the Cubs would then send Olson to the Padres in the Peavy deal.
12:54am: According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, Padres GM Kevin Towers "envisions a way to do a [Jake Peavy] deal now only with the Cubs." We've heard rumors of the Padres and Cubs trying to rope in the Orioles or Rays as a third team.
Heyman adds that Peavy would approve a trade to Chicago "without any significant reworking of his contract or other major concessions." Does that imply that the Cubs would not have to guarantee Peavy's 2013 option ($22MM) or grant him a full no-trade clause?
Keep in mind that despite all the virtual ink that will be spilled on Peavy over the next four days, Jayson Stark sees "just about a zero chance" he's dealt at the Meetings. Still, the Cubs and Padres seem to already have a framework in place involving Sean Marshall, Kevin Hart, Josh Vitters, and maybe Ronny Cedeno.

i'm glad we've they've decided there's a possibility a trade can be made...
i'm sure by dangling brian giles they could get the devil rays interested.
but, for some reason, this all seems to big and good to be true.

I see what you're saying, Green_Grove, but as a Cubs fan....I'm roped in! Come on, with Peavy we have the best rotation in baseball, by far.
Now all we'll need is that left handed bat for the lineup.
If all plays out well, we'll be downright scary this year.

Sorry for being obtuse but whats the deal with Garrett Olson ? Is he any good ? is he like a #3 pitcher ?
Posted by: BaseBallz | December 08, 2008 at 01:43 AM
As a padres fan, i love jake peavy and he has won us many games...
But he's never really won "the big game" over his career, he hasnt had to many chances...
But idk, if he's the guy that brings them over the top to the world series.
Hopefully we get a nice package with vitters in exchange. he truly is a great pitcher, in petco or wrigley or any other park for that matter.
Posted by: Green Grove | December 08, 2008 at 01:53 AM
Would the Cubs consider expanding the deal with the Orioles to make it Olsen and Luke Scott for Pie and Marquis?
Scott: LH power bat the Cubs say they need.
Olsen: Pitching "prospect" spun to Padres in Peavy deal.
Pie: O's would give him 550 ABs in LF and see what happens, like they did with Adam Jones this season.
Marquis: Cubs get rid of his salary; O's get a desperately needed SP.
Posted by: mstrchef13 | December 08, 2008 at 01:58 AM
no good. in order to send marquis to the orioles the cubs would have to keep his contract. further luke scott is more valuable than marquis.
Posted by: roguesaw | December 08, 2008 at 05:19 AM
Just a thought, but the O's are also looking to move Ramon Hernandez and the Padres are in need of a Veteran catcher.
Hernandez isn't ideal but he would be a decent pickup for the Padres if somehow the Cubs ate some of his salary in the deal.
Pie/Jones/Markakis would be a decent young OF for the future of the O's but I am suprised they are willing to move the pitching because they suck there too.
Posted by: KangarooBoxer26 | December 08, 2008 at 07:22 AM
That would be a good deal for the Cubs, but I think Cedano would have to be included or the Padres wont do it. The Cubs dont need Marshall, and he hasnt impressed me much at all...and Vitters is a player for the future, so the Cubs can sacrifice him in the trade to win now. Cedano and Hart will be the big losses for the Cubs, but both can be easily replaced.
I think if there is no 3rd team, and I hope there isnt...especially with the Orioles involved, then the Cubs will have to add a 5th player. I dont want to give up Fontenot, but maybe Donald Veal?
Posted by: namesake49 | December 08, 2008 at 07:28 AM
Boy, I like how Axelrodme says the Cubs put a winner on the field year after year..ha,ha,ha!!!!! What, two years of winning the division, with huge payroll, and all the sudden their the best? Uhhhh..NO!!
Posted by: Brian | December 08, 2008 at 07:36 AM
I thought the whole idea of getting a third team was so we didn't have to give up Vitters. I thought Vitters took the place of the pitching we don't have. I was thinking that if we swapped Pie for Olson our deal would look like:
Orioles: Pie
San Diego: Marshall, Olson, Cedeno, Colvin/Fontenot/Hart
Cubs: Peavy
Posted by: cubs4ever | December 08, 2008 at 07:46 AM
Axelrod and Towers are now acting like little kids! They know the Braves offer was way better than ANYTHING the Cubbies can throw out there, and Towers now realize he screwed up! How else do you explain the cheap shots he throwing at Frank Wren? He figures he can say the Braves embarassed him, and all is forgiven in SD when the return for Peavy is no where close to what the Braves offered! Man, this dude is worse than a 15 year girl!!
Posted by: Brian | December 08, 2008 at 08:00 AM
You need Vitters to GET that front line pitching that the Cubs lack. You cannot get good young pitching for Pie, Cedeno, Marshall, etc. It's going to involve Vitters.
Posted by: Bdlugz | December 08, 2008 at 08:06 AM
Brian,
It's really interesting to see so many Braves fans so sure the Braves package was WAY better than anything the Cubs could use. Obviously not.. GMs are not stupid, they would not hurt themselves or their teams by taking a clearly lesser deal.
The Cubs deal would likely involve a top 10 prospect with a huge ceiling. A pitcher who's proven himself as a potential #4 starter, a solid relief prospect, a cheaper solid defensive SS, and a higher ceiling pitcher from a 3rd team.
I fail to see how this is WAY worse than a very very good defensive and average offensive SS, two pitchers who have a good ceiling but could not push their MLB ERA below 5.50, and a fast center fielder with pretty solid defense and is average offensively, but has a pretty solid ceiling.
As much as the Braves fans may love their package, it really wasn't anything that would blow you out of the water. Personally, If i'm the Padres and rebuilding for 2010-2012, I'd take the guy with monster potential in Vitters.
Posted by: Bdlugz | December 08, 2008 at 08:42 AM
Obviously, Towers likes the deal with the Cubs better or he would have taken the Braves offer in the first place. I seriously doubt Towers cares which team Peavy goes to, he just wants the most in return. Morton and Reyes have not done anything at the ML level (Morton was one of the worst starters in the NL with more than 15 starts last year). Marshall has had an ERA in the 3's his first 2 ML seasons. Vitters is the best prospect in the whole conversation to date, bar none.
The Braves wouldn't give up any of their top tier prospects and the Cubs appear willing to do that - that is the difference. If Braves fans are upset, they should blame Wren for not wanting to trade any of their top 5 prospects for a CY winner - not Towers.
Posted by: Banks1954 | December 08, 2008 at 09:13 AM
As a Padres fan, my thoughts:
First, the Cubs' offer nets us more players, filling several holes. And we have many.
That being said, Escobar is likely the best overall player featuring in either offer. The problem is that whilst I'd love to get Escobar, he was more of a "win now" player than the prospect Hanson could have been.
The Cubs' offer features the best prospect overall in Vitters, better than Hernandez.
Finally, the biggest part of the deal for Towers is getting pitching back for Peavy. In that sense, Marshall is a better pitcher than Morton, and Olson may still have unfulfilled potential.
I'm still not blown away by the Cubs' offer, simply because I feel we're getting quantity more than quality. I would have been more impressed by 2-3 top prospects rather than an OK 5 for 1 deal.
I think the Yankees could easily come in and offer Hughes, Kennedy and Jackson and steal Peavy, or the Angels offer Anenhart, Wood and Willits or another good pitching prospect.
Posted by: tomfromsd | December 08, 2008 at 09:15 AM
The problem with the Braves package is that the first half, if not more, of Yunel's service time would be waisted when they weren't competing. I think its pretty clear that Towers prefers the Cubs package because:
1. It has more upside
2. There is more pitching
3. The centerpiece of this deal would be ready when they are ready to compete again, in 2 to 3 years.
I'm not sure how you can blame him. Its as simple as this. The braves can still have him, but like many said from the beginning, it seems like you need to be giving up Heyward or Hanson to make it happen. Wren isn't willing, which is his call...and he may be smarter for it. However, the Cubs are willing to give up that type of prospect, and it seems that is what Towers wants.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 08, 2008 at 09:17 AM
Adenhart, not Anenhart.
I should explain the following statement before someone comments on it:
" think the Yankees could easily come in and offer Hughes, Kennedy and Jackson and steal Peavy, or the Angels offer Anenhart, Wood and Willits or another good pitching prospect."
What I mean is not that this will happen, or that it's likely to happen, but rather that the Cubs' offer is probably the best so far but by no means unbeatable. Whether another team jumps in or not is speculation, but there is room for improvement here without overpaying for Peavy.

Uh, no. I wouldn't take some 19 year old whom there is a good chance will be a bust (like all prospects.) If he is damn great, why the Cubs dumping him with 3-4 other players for a pitcher with an eight-figure salary and a better-than-average chance of injury? Two huge injury risks in Peavy and Harden? Boy you can just see the 2009 postmortem "why the Cubs failed" stories written already!
Anyway, Towers is doing his usual song-and-dance again. The Braves' package was better (than the Cubs'), the Cubs package is good enough for Peavy and he isn't jumping on any of it. I bet at this point Peavy is a Padre till July 2009.

Sure, if Peavy says so...and it seems to me that he wants to be in Chicago. If the Cubs could get him without guarenteeing the option or giving him a full NTC...I would be a little more comfortable giving up Vitters. I still hate it though...the cubs system would be gone at that point.

Ugghhh...do we really have to go over this again??
1. The Cubs are in win now mode. They would trade Vitters because, while they LOVE his potential, he doesn't help in the next 3 years, which is their legit window. Its not that hard to figure out...
2. Peavy isn't a "huge" injury risk. He has him concerns, like many pitchers do, but they obviously think he will be ok.

Agreed tomfromsd...I think as a Cubs fan and as a Pads fan, we are on the same page.

It seems pretty clear that he does prefer Chicago. the only reason I bring these 2 up is because Peavy expressed "some" interest in them.
As far as trading Vitters, you have to give up quality to get quality. Jake is a great pitcher. You guys will fall in love with him.
Posted by: tomfromsd | December 08, 2008 at 09:23 AM
"Two huge injury risks in Peavy and Harden?"
Peavy has averaged 193+ IP over the last 6 seasons. Maybe not a workhorse, but you can't seriously say he's a "huge injury risk."

"As far as trading Vitters, you have to give up quality to get quality. Jake is a great pitcher. You guys will fall in love with him. "
Agreed. Its nothing against Jake...just that the Cubs have 1 real blue chip prospect in their system, and his timing would fall exactly in line with when Aramis' contract is up...
However, Hendry and the Cubs are in win now mode, and I'm not sure I can blame them.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 08, 2008 at 09:38 AM
We can't be 100% sure if Peavy prefers the Cubs over the Braves unless Towers takes the offer you Cubs fans are commenting. If Towers takes that offer without coming back and asking for more and more, like he did with the Braves, then, yeah, it's pretty obvious Peavy wants to be on the Cubs. You just can't believe some writers, because they are all trying to churn up an interesting story with all the competition with other writers..I mean, am I right?
Posted by: Brian | December 08, 2008 at 09:44 AM
As soon as this deal is about to be made Towers will try to get Angels involved and probably the Braves again too, just to try to get more out of the deal.
Posted by: wisbrave | December 08, 2008 at 09:53 AM
"We can't be 100% sure if Peavy prefers the Cubs over the Braves unless Towers takes the offer you Cubs fans are commenting."
Umm, I'd say we can be about 90% sure. Everything we have ever read has indicated this, from all the writers. Its nothing against the Braves, but the Cubs were a 97 win team last year, and he seems to want to win now.
"As soon as this deal is about to be made Towers will try to get Angels involved and probably the Braves again too, just to try to get more out of the deal."
I doubt it...I think Towers is actually waiting on Hendry here. Hendry wants to get the bat he wants and see where they are from there.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 08, 2008 at 10:03 AM
As much as I would try to do the trade without giving up Vitters, does anyone remember the last Cubs prospect that was traded in 1 of these Peavy-type deals and wound up being any good? Dontrelle? He had 1 good year and now he's terrible. Before that, Palmeiro?? If Vitters truly is part of a package for Peavy, something tells me that Hendry doesn't think he is that special of a player. He has refused to trade certain prospects in the past (Pie, most recently, whoops) so his supposed willingness to deal Vitters just leads me to believe his ceiling is not as high as we might believe. As for Cedeno, Hart and Marshall. See ya. Nothing special about any of them and they won't be missed though Marshall could make a decent #4/#5 starter.
Posted by: amhcubby12 | December 08, 2008 at 10:09 AM
Ricky Nolasco is going to be pretty darned good, so I'd say he was the last one.
I think Hendry LOVES Vitters...but he also realizes that he is being paid to win right now, and right now is their window. He isn't worried about 5 years from now, he is worried about the next three. Hendry wants to get this thing done, meaning a WS. If he believes that adding Peavy to a 97 win team can do this, he will give up anyone that isn't a core part of it.
I understand the philosophy, but don't love it. Just saying that they are in win now, and Vitters aparently isn't changing that.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 08, 2008 at 10:20 AM
Bdlugz,
I don't think the Braves deal is on the table any longer, so the Padres wouldn't be taking the lesser deal as much as they'd be taking the only adequate deal (which is how I'd describe both rumored packages) on the table.
A few more things...Calling Vitters a top 10 prospect is a bit of a stretch. He's certainly a very good prospect and his ceiling might be among the 10 highest in baseball, but I think his actual ranking this year is probably top 20-25 at best. You also describe Olson as a higher ceiling prospect from a 3rd team and describe Morton as Reyes as guys with good ceilings who couldn't push their MLB ERA below 5.50, but Garrett Olson's ERA in majors last season was 6.65. Towers may very well be higher on Olson than the Braves pitchers, but citing MLB ERA as a reason the Braves pitchers aren't that valuable is a tad ridiculous when you're also arguing that Olson is very valuable.
I'm also getting sick of all the Cubs fans on here describing Escobar as an average offensive SS. The guy had the 3rd best OBP in baseball among SS last season, posted an OPS+ that was above league average for all positions, and by all indications 2008 was a down year for Escobar due in no small part to a lower BABIP than expected. No he doesn't have tremendous offensive upside, but he's a very good bet to be around a .300/.370/.420 player over the next 5 years, numbers that would consistently rank among the top 5-10 for SS.
Posted by: nixa37 | December 08, 2008 at 10:38 AM
Banks1954,
Marshall most certainly did not have an ERA in the 3's in each of his first 2 ML seasons. In 2006, his first season in the majors, Marshall posted a 5.59 ERA with just 77 K to go along with 59 BB in 126 IP. Those numbers aren't a far cry from Morton's 6.15 ERA, 48 K, and 41 BB in 75 IP. Morton also has an excuse to a certain extent as he was pitching through injuries throughout the 2nd half of the year.
Posted by: nixa37 | December 08, 2008 at 10:41 AM
"I understand the philosophy, but don't love it. Just saying that they are in win now, and Vitters aparently isn't changing that."
As a Cubs fan, I think we have to have the "win now" mentality, we have our best shot to be good for the next 2-3 years than we've had in a long, long time. What are the chances Vitters is going to give us more production than Aramis or Soriano in the next 4-5 years? Probably pretty small, so even if Vitters does hit the cover off the ball, they would likely trade him anyway if he's that good in the next couple of years.
Posted by: Banks1954 | December 08, 2008 at 10:48 AM
"The guy had the 3rd best OBP in baseball among SS last season, posted an OPS+ that was above league average for all positions, and by all indications 2008 was a down year for Escobar due in no small part to a lower BABIP than expected."
Nixa, you have got to stop using the BABIP argument. Average is .300, and he was over that last year! Sure it wasn't as high as his .370ish (guessing from what I remember) from the year before, but that was obviously lucky. Saying that he was "unlucky" because he has at .312 just shows that the stat is being used incorrectly. Its much, much more likely that his .367 BABIP from the year before was lucky than his numbers from last year.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 08, 2008 at 10:49 AM
Banks,
Did you know that Aramis can opt out of his contract after 2010? Thats 2 years! And even if he didn't his 2012 year is a club option.
Vitters is right in that window to take over...and believe me, if the Cubs believe they can get the same production from a guy set to make fractions of what Aramis does, they wouldn't pick it up. Or, if Aramis opts out, they have someone to step in. Believe me, Vitters might end up being very valuable in 3 years, not the 4 or 5 you are talking about.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 08, 2008 at 10:54 AM
Aduncaroo,
While the average BABIP may in fact be .300, that doesn't at all mean that the expected BABIP for all hitters is .300 (Ichiro is at .350+ for his career). The fact that you are saying he wasn't unlucky last year just because he was above .300 shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the statistic on your part. Yes, his 2007 season was in part due to good luck on BABIP, but that doesn't mean that his 2008 season wasn't in part due to bad luck on BABIP. I think its pretty clear that Escobar is neither fundamentally a .367 or .312 hitter on balls in play , but rather somewhere in between the two though probably closer to the lower number.
Both James and Marcel have Escobar returning to the .327-.330 level in BABIP, which I find very reasonable. Both of those numbers would obviously indicate that Escobar was unlucky on balls in play last year, as I suggested.
Posted by: nixa37 | December 08, 2008 at 11:16 AM
nixa,
I understand the stat very well, but I don't like all that much. I don't like it when people say a guy is "lucky" or "unlucky" because of it, especially in a case like this, when the guy was at .312, which is STILL above average.
Yes, the projections have him in the middle somewhere...however, the guys that have high ones usually have huge line drive rates, or are very, very fast (Ichiro). Escobar doesn't really do either all that well...and I think a .325 BABIP is probably an ok estimate, but to project this number is nearly impossible.
But to go back to my point, the projections have him there mostly because it falls around the average of his first two seasons. However, its more likely that he is worse than a .330 than he is better, do you not agree?
Basically, he was more lucky in his first year than he was unlucky last year.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 08, 2008 at 11:44 AM
"He's heard the Padres might be concerned with Vitters' hand/wrist."
First of all, as a guy who wants to keep Vitters anyway, this is great news!
Secondly, the guy went .328/.365/.498 after coming back from the wrist thing. If there is something of concern, you want him to take more walks...but I think the wrist is fine.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 08, 2008 at 11:59 AM
I don't think that means Vitters stays away. It means more has to be added to the Peavy pot.

as for him as a prospect, though he has been highly regarded in our system for a few years now, no one has ever said he'd be anymore than a third starter.

But if you read that Crasnick story more carefully, they did drive together, but did not take a CAB. I'm sure you meant an "r" there instead of a "b." Pretty funny tho to think of a poor team like the Padres trying to pay for that fare.

While Vitters is a great young prospect we need to remember that he has never succeeded above rookie ball. Now that is not a knock on him but more of a way to temper expectations. It takes a number of high schoolers an extra year to get out of rookie ball, the problem is that usually they weren't as high profile as Vitters. When you look at the other top high school talents, from 07, Moustakas, Dominguez, and Heyward all have suceeded in full season ball. Vitters is a step behind them, he didn't even make Mayo's top 60 prospect list which is not just Mayo's opinion but a compliation from scouts.
I do think to get this deal done the Cubs do need to involve a 3rd team. So I don't think its a stretch to say that the Braves package was better than what the CUBS have to offer. Remember the original reported offer for Peavy was Escobar and Schafer plus a pitching prospect. When Towers wanted a 2nd pitching prospect the Braves switched out Schafer for Gorky's. Cubs don't have the luxarey to switch out parts (esp. after giving away Ceda) Vitters, Marshall, Pie, Hart (Fontenot/Cedeno/ whoever else is needed to get it done) is the best the Cubs have to offer. I'm not saying that the Cubs have a bad offer, Vitters, Marshall, Olsen, Hart + one more is a nice offer. But the Cubs are litterally betting the farm on this deal.

These little bits of nothing from GMs, agents or reporters will fill the week up. Maybe Towers and Axelrod will share the same sink when they wash their hands in the mens room or something.

they couldn't afford to rent a car, or heaven forbid, drive their own?

I don't understand this site. All you do is put together articles from various papers around the country. You provide no insight and I don't know what you're watching right now but an hour ago the yankees were talking to the dodgers about a swap of Cano and Kemp. Benmaller.com does the same thing. Anyone can post about rumors. Didn't you say renteria was signed like 2 weeks ago and you had an exclusive? Very, very weak.
You want up to the minute winter meetings rumors AND ANALYSIS (because we know it takes a brain to interpret and a bot to spit out links to other peoples work)
then go here:

If you were a real 'journalst' in our field or a real blogger, you'd be in Las Vegas. But I doubt any front office personnel would ever give you the time of day due to your lack of knowledge when it comes to Sport mgmt

uhhhh, wouldn't that be mlb.com ? Since he said, "MLB.com has put up the first prospect rankings..."

"When Towers wanted a 2nd pitching prospect the Braves switched out Schafer for Gorky's."
Umm...no. Towers asked that it be changed from Schafer to Hernandez from what i have read.
Stat man...talk about weak. Do you feel better about yourself now? More of a man? He obviously does alright with what he is doing, and doesn't claim to be anything he is not. How is your website doing?

I posted the wrong link.

Ken Rosenthal is actually talking to GM's, agents and aGMs. He's not reading news papers and posting secondary material.
I have my own web site but I refuseto advertise on it. As you can see, I am a sabremetrician and I work for a Major League baseball team. It's hilarious seeing all this and then being in a room with real baseball people. Reality and whats going on in web sites are two totally different things.
So thanks Tim, for putting the time together to provide lnks to major publications all around the country.
If anyone is interested on what it all means and it's impact, please feel free to contact me.
I no longer evaluate fantasy teams. I'm sorry, I just don't have the time to analyze everyone's, and when I cherry picked people got mad but feel free to contact me. If I am not swamped and/or your league drafts early, be my guest to send it over. And if anyone is concerned, I report to the Player personnel director for the NY Mets. His name is Tony the Tiger and no, he is nt the spokesman for Frosted Flakes

Uh, i don't understand, stumbling on a website, disagreeing with it and then posting about it. Move on. It's a wide wide world web, go find something else. you don't like it? Great. No one really gives two bits about your opinion.
God, Padres are really cutting thier budget. A cab? Are there no Enterprises in San Diego. Do neither of these dudes have thier own cars?

"Anyone can post about rumors"
Hence the name, mlbtraderumors.com. good thing you're a saberamtrician, though, since you can't read plain english. is this guy for real?
Posted by: 100backeduptrucks | December 08, 2008 at 12:53 PM
My website is fine, but since I work in baseball I dont update it every day, thanks. Nor do I advertise it on other people's blogs but since you turned into a know it all:
Sorry if I view a web site that has barely an original analysis, or any first hand repoting similar to something like TMZ. A buch of people send in their clips of celebs doing stupid things and TMZ makes a collection of it, makes everyone come to them for juicy rumors which half the time arent much more than a drunk rant published, and people hold onto it for gold.
And my point was if you're going to let someone steer you, why not go to a credible source. Yea, you get a bunch of hits a day, thats great. All I know is last week you had Renteria signing with all these minute by minute updates. Were you makign that up or what? You;re playing telephone. You hear something who hears something who hears something and people think it's a story.
How's your life going, Aduncaroo? Checking in from work? Your organe stand has wireless? W
hat's it even matter, Peavy is not likely to get traded this year anyway anymore so forget about it. Towers asked too much, everyone laughed and now he'll either have ro get a lower
And if you want to talk rumors, then why don't you get on the trade thats shaking Las vegas that involves 4 teams, Peavy going to the yankes, Cain going to the Padres Matsui going to the Gaints and a bunch of Yankee prospects going every where. But the Post didn't report that so none of you know. Exactly, if it's whispered, it's heard. It's not reported. And by the time it's been whispered it's been reported and picked up incorrectly several times.
How do I know? Oh my gosh, I'm in Las Vegas.
So again, Acuundaro, how's your life? Mine's fantastic. I guess with the info I knew if I didn't have a job for a professioanl team I'd say it's be great. Seeing how I helped work out a deal for $400M for citibank and a 800M deal for jets/Gaints stadium for MetZLife when I worked for IMGworldwide, but what do I know.
I come for the entertainment, not the "news."

Wow, how defensive. I struck a nerve. yes, I questioned the site. I don't understand it and I wanted an explanation but since you're so bright all I got was attacks.
I don't understand a site dedicated for rumors if they're spit back out, and if someone of them are not correct.
You guys are right. My opinion shouldn't matter to you. Just like yours doesnt to me.
But still, no ones been able to expain it but I thank you for your intelligent insight.

I'm doing very well though, I appreciate you asking. Those of us that are actually professional don't need to cite where we work and what "deals" we have made, and blah blah blah. Why don't you let some knowledge of baseball and some well thought out meaningful posts do the talking for you. Just an idea...

Hey Stat Man -
For someone who supposedly despises this site, you're sure posting an awful lot on it.
How about you shove off, quit throwing around insults and go back to your "baseball job". No one is impressed by you.

Wow statman those are some pretty nice credentials... I bet you get all the fly chicks and mad ass too... i wish i could work an 800MM deal... your a damn fool... did you do stats for F-ing BOZO the clown or somthing... quit talking about the deals you made in your monopoly game you played in your moms basement you Dumb ass... rosenthal blows and half of his stuff is BS... NO WAY that guy gets all of those rumors on his own... if this sight sucks so much why do you feel the need to post on it? go back to NY and keep working out those big monopoly deals with your grandma... what a

stat-well, first, i contributed to the drinking fund for the floor i lived on in college. then, i contributed to the group of cubs fans trying to raise enough money to buy the team, though my $1.00 wasn't nearly enough. however, i continue to contribute to this site by occasionally posting something that matters, though i'll be the first to admit sometimes my ideas aren't the greatest or particularly ground-breaking. but i don't think i'm going to contribute to you making any more of an ass of yourself, but i'll happily remember you visiting, and i'll still post once you've moved on. oh, and the site is a news aggregator, essentially just a collection of links with some editorial content added by the moderator, a guy named Tim (great job Tim) and his staff (great job everyone else as well), who started doing this for fun, then found he could make some pretty good coin doing it. but, best of luck advising the mets, i hope they find a bullpen through your tutelage.

guys like you make the internet fun. thank you.
Posted by: 100backeduptrucks | December 08, 2008 at 01:29 PM
statman if you are working for the mets then how does it feel to completely F things up 2 years in a row? what an idiot
Posted by: BlueCatuli | December 08, 2008 at 01:46 PM
Now I know who failed to contribute $5 to buy the Cubs. We would not be worrying about budgets at this point.
Didn't George Castanza report to player personnel for the Mets?
Posted by: studio179 | December 08, 2008 at 01:51 PM
I love how stat-man claims he helped work on the financing for multiple stadiums yet he uses the abbreviation of M for million, when in the financial world MM is the universal abbreviation for million. Though its rarely used M would stand for thousand. I'm pretty sure by worked on, he at best means he looked at the documents one time.
In that case, I was heavily involved in the billion dollar deal for the Cowboys new stadium. Do I win some respect points?
Posted by: nixa37 | December 08, 2008 at 02:00 PM
Costanza worked for the Yankees. Hence all the Steinbrenner scenes.
On an unrelated note, CNN reports that the Tribune Co. filed for BK Chapter 11. Wonder what the effect on payroll will be as the BK will be for debt restructuring.

The cubs franchise is not part of the bankruptcy filing - http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?section=mlb&id=3754785

nixa... that guy is a legend in his own mind...
Posted by: BlueCatuli | December 08, 2008 at 02:14 PM
studio-i actually didn't even contribute a dollar, so feel free to blame me for the cubs' financial trouble.
as far as chapter 11 goes, i know nothing about how bankruptcy works, but shouldn't the cubs be somewhat protected since they are already up for sale?i'm sure the prospect of them filing for chapter 11 has surfaced before. of course with the cubs long history of good luck and things always coming out ok, i don't think there's anything to worry about. seriously though, i kind of suspected tribune co. would file sooner or later, and i'm hoping this just speeds up the process of getting the cubs sold.
Posted by: 100backeduptrucks | December 08, 2008 at 02:14 PM
Can we just denounce anything "reported" by Rosenthal? He's making stuff up left and right. Let's wait until a credible source reports something on the Peavy front, or any rumor, okay? Thanks.
Posted by: DodgersBruin | December 08, 2008 at 02:39 PM
Peavy is not coming to Chicago.
Posted by: rememberthecoop | December 08, 2008 at 02:54 PM
Rosenthal is the worst...
Might want to ignore anything he says or writes until he gets something right.
Posted by: MikeClarke | December 08, 2008 at 02:54 PM
100,
I won't blame you. I'm not that rich to be a bidder. The sale of the Cubs is going on with the bidders. It will be done in a few months. I know we keep hearing that. Every year, Zell has to pay the loan people for the Tribune dollars he borrowed. He put very little of his own money in the purchase. This happens in June, I believe. The process for selling the Cubs has taken longer than anyone thought. Partially because of the economy, partially because of Zell. Up to this point he has held out for the most dollars he can get from the Cub buyers. The team is really the only big money maker under the Tribune umbrella. Some feel he could have been done with this if he sold by now. He felt different. Regardless, the sale is going to happen soon...not soon enough for all of us.
I know I feel like I bought part of the team with all the money I spent at Wrigley over time. I'm sure many fans feel the same.
David,
Side note, I know Castanza worked for the Yankees. There was an episode where he was offered a job with the Mets and was trying to get fired by the Yankees. Does not matter. Anyway...
Posted by: studio179 | December 08, 2008 at 02:55 PM
No we can't because Statman says so :)
Even though Rosenthal says that Towers is only going to talk about Peavy with Cubs, Statman has posted Rosenthal's link on this blog to irrirate us all into believing that the Yankees are talking to Towers about Peavy.
Methinks, Statman isn't in Vegas. Methinks he's in his grandma's basement.
Posted by: iowacubs | December 08, 2008 at 02:56 PM
Doesn't everyone always associate the words "underachieving" and "injury prone" with the Cubs farm system. So why would they trade Peavy to the Cubs centered around a guy whose wrist is a worry? Sean Marshall? He couldn't beat out Jason Marquis. What does that tell you about the guys ceiling? They had another high pick like this. He just fired Scott Boras lmao. Thats right Corey Patterson. Is that what you want for a number 3 pitcher out of Petco? lol
Posted by: IFiredScottBoras | December 08, 2008 at 03:09 PM
system?*

Love this site! Just curious.... does Tim make money off this site?? If so, is this his only job? because that'd be soooo awesome!!
Posted by: Zach | December 08, 2008 at 03:10 PM
Cubs would make a big mistake trading Vitters.
Posted by: AtlantaBred | December 08, 2008 at 03:11 PM
I guess I can't state my opinion because its the cubs, right?
Posted by: IFiredScottBoras | December 08, 2008 at 03:11 PM
And yes, I'm pretty sure Tim makes money off this site and it is his only job. Don't quote me though.
Posted by: AtlantaBred | December 08, 2008 at 03:12 PM
Yeah Tim is super cool dude. Even though his favorite team is my ARCH RIVAL.
Posted by: IFiredScottBoras | December 08, 2008 at 03:12 PM
"Even though his favorite team is my ARCH RIVAL"
That explains so much...
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 08, 2008 at 03:21 PM
atlantabred-you might be right about the cubs trading vitters, but if i'm the cubs i don't hesitate to do this deal. this is the best cubs team any of us have seen and they're window to win is 2, maybe 3 years, and vitters is at least 3 years away. i'm of the opinion that big market teams can afford to give up prospects for the right deal, and i think peavy is that sort of guy. i usually sit out of the prospects debate because in the end i feel they are just prospects. they're numbers are against pitchers of wildly varying quality and are too much of an unknown. the cubs don't exactly have a track record for churning out great young players, so when they do produce one, and they already have such a good team, and they can use that one blue chip to acquire someone like peavy and give this team a downright scary rotation, i absolutely do it. i understand those that wouldn't, but i would.
once new owners are in, i think they'll be willing to spend money to keep a competitive team on the field. i'm also hoping that today's news about tribune filing for chapter 11 speeds up the process.
and yes, this it tim's only job.
and statman, i really hope you come back soon, i miss you already...
Posted by: 100backeduptrucks | December 08, 2008 at 03:26 PM
100,
I'm kind of torn. If Peavy doesn't require a full NTC, and most importantly doesn't require the 22 mil option to be picked up...I'm really torn. I love Vitters...but Peavy would be even more attractive contract wise if that was the case.
If they did the Peavy thing, I'd be fine with them leaving the lineup alone until the deadline and readdressing the situation again.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 08, 2008 at 03:56 PM
It's really interesting that the ONLY team bidding for Peavy is the CUBS, which means, they are essentially bidding against themselves.
Posted by: basemonkey | December 08, 2008 at 04:07 PM
Wow Towers! Why say that. Here you go burning the only leverage you have again.
Hold Peavy till: Sabathia, Burnett, and Perez sign. Then you have leverage to bigger teams. Instead Towers " I am going to hold Peavy until he gains value"
Comical mismanagement
Posted by: BK | December 08, 2008 at 04:16 PM
I agree with Green Grove but why send Giles to the Rays. Haven't there already been rumors about Giles to the Cubs. This seems to make sense, if the Padres want to unload half of their household name players.
Posted by: grimes | December 08, 2008 at 05:02 PM
The only thing I predict is that Tim's wife will file for divorce by Thursday.
Kidding Tim...Great job on the coverage!!!
Posted by: EricTheMidget | December 08, 2008 at 05:43 PM
Giles to Cubs? Yeah, I don't think so.
I've commented on this prolonged snooze of a story several times, so all I have now is a brief note:
Anyone else disappointed in the way Towers has conducted himself throughout this process? I find some of his tactics a bit juvenile and misleading. That is not the way to conduct business in baseball, folks.
Posted by: Ruck859 | December 08, 2008 at 05:59 PM
"It's really interesting that the ONLY team bidding for Peavy is the CUBS, which means, they are essentially bidding against themselves."
Not really. Peavy's list of teams he would go to includes the Cubs. Towers is saying what he wants in return. Not a 'bidding' situation, just trade talk.
Posted by: studio179 | December 08, 2008 at 06:12 PM
All you people keep saying how bad Towers is doing with the Peavy trade. Towers has is hands tied behind his back. 1.) Peavy has in the final call on the trade. 2) Towers can not deal the whey he uesd to because of Sandy Alderson has to make sure it is part of moneyball. 3) John Moores is going threw a divorce and need to cut payroll fast. (Moores needs to sell the team)
Posted by: DTogo | December 08, 2008 at 06:23 PM
Yeah, but he could just keep saying "we're in talks with ballclubs and once something is settled we'll let you know".
Instead he's provided a running commentary.
