thats right curt you tell them your opinion, about everything, even if they dont want to hear it, which most of the time they dont, about anything...

Wow!
Wittenmyer expects Pie to get dealt NOW!?!?!?!?
After they've signed a clear replacement?!??
And he's out of options?!?!
I'm sorry, but, DUHHHHH.
Posted by: scribbletone | December 17, 2008 at 10:52 AM
I really, REALLY wish Schilling will just shut up. The only person who wants to hear him is himself.
The only reason he says Boston is best for Teixeira is because he is on the freaking team (or was, is he a free agent?) Of course he wants Teixeira to go to Boston so he can play with him.

Pie will be very good one day. The cubs are going to regret giving him up. Even if he doesnt hit for the high average, he plays great D and will hit an above average amount of HRs for a CF. Plus he should steal about 30 bases. The kid is just still so young its sucks to sell low on him.

And by the way Curt, the Sharks are the best team in the NHL, and the Patriots are on the outside looking in.
And last time I checked, the Tampa Bay Freakin' Rays defeated your Red Sox and their "new breed of sports fan". Shut up. Take yourself and your bloody sock elsewhere and lock yourself in a room.

thanks gordon wittenmeyer.

I don't understand why KC would trade Zack Greinke. He's the young starting pitcher they've been searching for since Bret Saberhagen and they want to trade him for postion players?? Then when the position players are good they get traded for....a young starting pitcher. When does it end?!?!?

Someone please explain to me how a team that broke league rules is considered the "class of the NFL".
Posted by: jrs | December 17, 2008 at 11:05 AM
That Dayton Moore article made me think of the weird scenario where the Braves sign Furcal, then trade him w/ cash to the Royals for Greinke.
Granted I only thought of that because little the Braves or Royals has done lately makes much sense.

I agree that giving up on Pie is really disappointing as a Cubs fan.
After watching what happened to Corey Patterson, and not to mention guys like Hee Seop Choi, Lou Montanez, Ryan Harvey and Micah Hoffpauir, it hurts me to practically see the same from Pie, who was supposed to break the pattern of failed Cubs prospects.
Instead, he just followed right through, although I think we can blame the way he was managed on a good deal of that. The guy will be just 24 next season, and still has all the tools to be a very good CF. He's already a plus defensive CF, and his speed is a weapon as well. He'll never hit for a super high average, but he can take a walk or two and has solid power for the position. If he can put it all together he could easily be a .280/.350/.450 guy with 30-40 steals and top defense in center, which would make him a star.
I just wish the Cubs would develop a star for once..

Geovanny Soto...you know, the Rookie of the Year...?
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 17, 2008 at 11:21 AM
It would not suprise me if Pie was a Padre byy the new year.
Posted by: Grey Suit | December 17, 2008 at 11:21 AM
Aduncaroo the fact that you only thought of one guy proves his point.
Actually the cubs develop plenty of pitching, its just position players. But guys like Zambrano (if you consider him a product of our system) Prior, Wood, Guzman, Mitre, Nolasco, Willis, ect. Most of the pitchers just end up hurt, but the talent is there.
Posted by: chicubs25 | December 17, 2008 at 11:29 AM
"Geovanny Soto...you know, the Rookie of the Year...?"
Yeah I was this close to writing, "Let's just hope Soto doesn't fall apart next year."
No doubt that a plus hitting catcher with plus power and solid defense is a star. Soto is going to be one of the best catchers in baseball for a while, with Mauer, Martin, Wieters, and McCann.

Wow I didn't know crack was that big of a problem in Chi town!
Posted by: Grey Suit | December 17, 2008 at 11:46 AM
as far as Schilling commentary goes; this is about the most even tempered, respectful thing he has ever said.
He managed to compliment Baltimore fans, give praise to the Angel franchise and even included the Yankees as offering an exciting baseball environment.
What amazes me most is the conflict he must have had with himself over this. On one hand if he speaks kindly of Boston, they might land Teixeira and he might get a second look with them for helping out in the cause and for saying how much he enjoys playing in Boston.
On the other hand, if the Sox sign Teixeira then would they really waste money on bringing back this loudmouth on an incentive laden deal?
Still....I wish he would go away once and for all. Decent pitcher, obnoxious human being.

"Aduncaroo the fact that you only thought of one guy proves his point."
I agree with the point he is making...they don't develop star position players very well...just making a point that they definitely have, as of right now, an absolute star in Soto.
"No doubt that a plus hitting catcher with plus power and solid defense is a star. Soto is going to be one of the best catchers in baseball for a while, with Mauer, Martin, Wieters, and McCann."
I agree. I love what he brings to the team, and have been a big fan of his for awhile. I think its cool that he was known as a defensive catcher throughout most of his time in the minors, and now people unfamiliar with him just ask how his defense is, because he can certainly hit.
Anyway, all those guys are good. Yadier is borderline in that category too...if he can keep hitting around .300.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 17, 2008 at 12:18 PM
That's why Soto is so great. Not only is he a fantastic all around hitter, but he's a plus defensive catcher as well. He got some tutoring from another great defender in Blanco, and appears to know how to call a game.
I would agree about Molina, but I don't think he matches those other guys as hitters. Molina is awesome behind the plate, but he's really not much more than a .300/.340/.400 hitter, which makes him a very good catcher, but not elite.
Guys like Wieters, Mauer, Martin and McCann are all good defensive catchers, and they're also top notch hitters as well. These are among my favorite players in the game, not many players are more valuable than an athletic, young catcher that's a plus with both the bat and glove.
Posted by: scribbletone | December 17, 2008 at 12:37 PM
I've heard that McCann is passable defensively, but isn't good. Where did you hear that he was above average? I've always thought of McCann as the polar opposite of Yadier Molina. Passable defensively, Amazing Offensively. I don't watch McCann enough to make my own judegment either way, which is why I'm asking.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 17, 2008 at 12:53 PM
I agree though, I love watching young, good catchers.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 17, 2008 at 01:00 PM
Didn't mean to say that McCann was a plus defensive catcher, he's more adequate or fringe-average, as you said.
But on the other hand, McCann will likely be the best offensive catcher in baseball the next few years, which makes up it a good deal.
Posted by: scribbletone | December 17, 2008 at 01:34 PM
I go back a ways and remember as a child another outfielder with speed who was shuffled from coach to coach, and hit about .250(more than Pie but not considered good enough)We traded him for a veteran pitcher and he did quite well. The pitcher never did what was promised. The outfielders name was Lou Brock.
Posted by: moe thacker | December 17, 2008 at 01:44 PM
I think that it was a bad idea for the Cubs to sign Gathright. They wanted him because he has speed and is good defensively but they already have that in Pie. Gathright is older and we have seen what he can do as a baseball player. Pie is still young and has shown that he is a very good player in the minors. He is only 24. Give him a legit shot at showing what he can do for a long period of time.
Posted by: CalCubsfan | December 17, 2008 at 02:22 PM
I'm opposed to trading him unless it's in a big deal where the cubs get a good return.
Posted by: CalCubsfan | December 17, 2008 at 02:27 PM
"Wow I didn't know crack was that big of a problem in Chi town!"
What does that mean? Obviously Pie isnt the only player we would send. It would obviously be a big package, im just saying that if we trade him it should be apart of a big deal. Plus we need a bullpen arm bad. I dont really think i would have to be on "crack" to think that.
Posted by: chicubs25 | December 17, 2008 at 02:44 PM
cubs fans on pie sound like yankee fans on melky
Posted by: the_kid_01 | December 17, 2008 at 02:45 PM
Wow thats a horrible comparison. Melky isn't the same defended nor has he ever been hyped as much by scouts. As far as speed, arm and power Pie is better than Melky.
Posted by: chicubs25 | December 17, 2008 at 03:10 PM
Plus Pie is kind of all we have. Its like when a family has two kids and one ends up dropping out of school and turning to drugs. Well that kid was Corey Paterson. Pie is our only hope!
Posted by: chicubs25 | December 17, 2008 at 03:22 PM
chicubs25 - Ah sorry man it read like you were proposing a Giles and Bell for Pie trade.
There are a few issues with any package including Giles and Bell.
1. Giles has a full no trade and a ton of personal issues at the moment.
2. With Hoffy leaving Bell is out closer and the only stable peice in out bullpen I dont see the Padres moving him right now.
Posted by: Grey Suit | December 17, 2008 at 03:32 PM
"I've heard that McCann is passable defensively, but isn't good. Where did you hear that he was above average?"
"Passable defensively" is about right. He makes most of the plays behind the plate, but he's not so hot throwing people out. He excels in game-calling, though. If he improved the throwing he'd pretty much be the perfect catcher.
Posted by: daslied | December 17, 2008 at 03:34 PM
Yeah but if your blowing a team up it makes no sense to hold onto pieces of value.
And the only reason i brought it up was someone said Pie will be a Padre, so i said only if we get a package like that.
Posted by: chicubs25 | December 17, 2008 at 06:52 PM
whats pie's deal? i have never heard someone's name so many times in one week..they really want him out of chi town huh. sounds like the guy is carrying a biological weapon..felix "wmd" pie now i want the phils to get him..whats his deal?whats he worth?
Posted by: huey | December 18, 2008 at 05:02 AM
Willie Blomquist should come back. He is a good utility player. He is also a fast runner.
Posted by: Joseph | December 18, 2008 at 08:41 AM
What would the CUbs be seeking in return for Pie? Other than a lefty OF bat what else do they need on a major league level and as well for the near future (prospects)?
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | December 18, 2008 at 09:38 AM
the cubs will not get ML talent for pie
1. he has never showed in the bigs he can make it
2. he's out of options and other teams know it, the cubs have to dump him.
3. he would be a great fit on the south side and ozzie would swear at him enough to either turn him around or make him retire!

jermaine dye for pie and marquis (and the cubbies pay most of marquis salary)
