« Odds and Ends: Rule 5, Beltre, Schmidt, Bako | Main | White Sox Have Inside Track On Abreu? »
9:03am: Following yesterday's implication from Kinzer that all offers for Furcal are for at least three years, Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times explains that the Dodgers offered two years plus a vesting option based on playing time. Though Ned Colletti said Furcal could exceed salary expectations if he hits incentives, Kinzer says the offer still falls short.
1:57am: ESPN's Jerry Crasnick talked to Rafael Furcal's agent Paul Kinzer, who expects his client to make a decision by the middle or end of next week. You know the suitors - the Dodgers, A's, Royals, and Blue Jays. Yahoo's Jeff Passan wrote yesterday that the Royals believe it will take a four-year, $44MM deal to sign Furcal.

Do it royals. Just do it
Posted by: Focs | December 11, 2008 at 02:05 AM
For the sake of all 4 teams, I hope he makes a decision soon. This is seemingly the 4th time there has been a "deadline for my client to sign." With the most recent being this coming Monday, and now not til middle of next week.
Good riddance.
Still would love to see him in Green and Gold, but if he doesn't, let's get this thing over with, so all these GMs can move forward...

I'd like to see the Royals get him. Like Rany says, Glass ain't hurting for cash, so he could swing it. This wouldn't look too bad:
Furcal (S)
Aviles (R)
DeJesus (L)
Guillen (R)
Gordon (L)
Butler (R)
Jacobs (L)
Olivo (R)
Crisp (S)

jrfukudome - I agree....that would be a solid lineup both on offense and defense. Furcal would be a big upgrade at SS, and would allow Aviles to play a solid 2B.
Make it happen Moore....make it happen!!

Sign him DM. Hopefully he's healthy.
Posted by: Grover'sRoyals | December 11, 2008 at 07:43 AM
Sign him Dodgers.....I think.
Posted by: dchillis | December 11, 2008 at 08:20 AM
Furcal realizes that he missed most of last season, right? Or didn't his agent tell him?
Posted by: tolo316 | December 11, 2008 at 09:09 AM
I agree. Come on and sign. Once Furcal is signed, the other teams can move on to filling their SS hole.
Come on A's.

Someone please out bid Kansas City. They don't need another big steamy pile of Jose Guillen.
Posted by: CSL | December 11, 2008 at 09:29 AM
I have a good feeling about this one. When Dayton Moore wanted Gil Meche he went to the owner, sold it, and they paid him what it took, outbidding other teams.
I bet that is what they have done now with Furcal.
It would really be helpful to put Aviles back at his natural position and get TPJ out of the lineup
Posted by: Mark_J | December 11, 2008 at 09:43 AM
it pains me to say it, but the Dodgers should just give up on Rafa and use the money that would have been spent on a possible 3 year deal, and sign Big Unit, Hoffman, and Vizquel to 1 year deals. Then go to Boras, tell him to stop f'n around, and get Manny signed.
Posted by: aj7380 | December 11, 2008 at 09:49 AM
RJ, Hoffman, and Vizquel? Great. Let's bring back Orel as the fifth starter and see if Franklin Stubbs has anything left in the tank.

Not to be a downer here, but the chance the royals sign furcal .5%. Unless we can move guillen, it's not happening
Posted by: acdds | December 11, 2008 at 11:01 AM
When was the last time a big time / high dollar free agent worked out for the royals (i.e. Juan Gon)...maybe Bo Jackson?? I would love to have Rafa if he is really healthy though! I am just sick of barely average in KC!!!! Either get it done or move on to the next best thing but stop waisting time. Didnt DM say he was going to put the best possible team on the field in 2009....PROVE IT
Posted by: gundy | December 11, 2008 at 03:36 PM
I don't know in the last three years Grudzielanek and Meche.
Posted by: gd | December 11, 2008 at 04:04 PM
gundy - the Royals drafted Bo Jackson.
And the Royals haven't had any big free agents because they had a lame duck GM in Allard Baird who wasn't allowed to spend money...he had to do what he could to field a team.
Glass respects Moore and part of the deal with him taking the GM job is that ownership would not meddle with baseball operations (at least not much). Moore has signed a couple of decent high dollar free agents, most notably Gil Meche. And Jose Guillen, while a jackass who had a low average last year, did hit 20 HR and have 97 RBI I believe.
And yes gd, Grudz was a heck of a FA signing as well.

"When was the last time a big time / high dollar free agent worked out for the royals"
Well, that Gil Meche thing from two years ago worked out pretty well.
Posted by: Mark_J | December 11, 2008 at 06:05 PM
Sign him OAKLAND AND THEN BRING BACK THE STACHE
Posted by: Briggs | December 11, 2008 at 08:09 PM
Let's get real for a second. Moore is going to pull the same approach with Glass as he did with Meche and Guillen. Sure Guillen is a controversial investment, but both of those investments have produced. Meche has the fourth lowest ERA in Royals history and Guillen, though a bit of an off field distraction, has put up the type of power the royals hoped he might. We need to get out there and firm up that lineup to help put up some much needed run support. Because despite stellar pitching from Meche and Greinke (at times I'd throw Bannister and even Hochevar in the mix) the Royals still were on the brink of losing one hundred games. I like the moves in the bullpen and the confidence shown in the starting rotation; but we need another solid bat. The risk with Furcal is of course his health, but even the Royals aren't ignorant enough to omit that essential part of his contract. They'll give him more money, but they'll put in his contract that he needs to play three fourths the season to collect the bulk of his dough.

I disagree, JJ, with a couple of things. They did NOT get what they paid for in Guillen. His stats were 20 homers, 97 RBIs, and a BA of .264. He is making about $12 mil. Look around the league and you will find many 20 homer, 90 RBI guys making a LOT less than that. $12 mil SHOULD get you a 30/110 (ish) guy. Guillen has NEVER been that kind of slugger. I like him on our team though because he lights fires and he DOES produce (although not like a $12 mil player) I also disagree about Gil Meche, in fact, I think HE should be the one in trade talks, not Greinke, but thats another topic. Meche isn't an $11 mil pitcher. Again, look at the stats and you can compare them to other starting pitchers around the league that have similar salaries. We overpaid for both of these guys, and I think it is obvious. Don't get me wrong, I like having both of these players on the team and think they are valuable assets, but my point is that they are overpaid. The bad thing is, we may have to do the same thing to acquire the much needed Furcal.

Furcal would be a great pickup for our defense & offense. I would meet him at spring training in Surprise AZ . Mr Glass, please give Moore the OK to get him.
Posted by: needfurcal | December 13, 2008 at 06:57 PM
I'm telling you guys that Furcal is worth 44 mil for 4 yrs.
Posted by: needfurcal | December 13, 2008 at 07:01 PM
LETS GO OAKLAND BUM BUM BUM BUM BUM
Posted by: Briggs | December 13, 2008 at 07:06 PM
UltimateroyalsFan, I totally agree that around the league both these guys aren't worth the kind of money we had to throw at them. I stress the words HAD TO THROW, because the truth of the matter is that players don't want to come to KC. It's sad. It's not necessarily the city itself either, it's more the fact that they don't come here to win championships. It's not like it was back in the eighties and nothing like putting on pinstripes in the late 90's and '00. Today players are looking to win or get paid. I think if we pay enough we might eventually win and that's when putting on Royal Blue will be like the pinstripes of old. Also, Kc hasn't been a place to amp your stats of late. I mean early 00's we had a dominant offense and guys like Dye and Damon and even Offerman. But nowadays we don't have any of those kind of numbers. But, I think we're going to have to agree to disagree about Meche. That guy may not be an 11 Mil pitcher but he'd be a lot closer to it if we gave him some aid. He's given us some pretty good outings the last couple years and I'm not sure he wouldn't have an outstanding record had we scored a little more.
Posted by: J.J. | December 14, 2008 at 12:18 AM
Actually ,J. Offerman was with us in 1995 . I do like the way you think JJ.
Posted by: We need R Furcal | December 14, 2008 at 11:18 AM
By getting Furcal we will add a winner with our young Royal team. He was a winner with Braves & Dodgers. Raffy is a great leadoff hitter & the very best defensive SS in all of baseball. The very beat ARM in all the big leagues. I feel if Royals get him, We will win the Central division.
Posted by: We need R Furcal | December 14, 2008 at 11:27 AM
No doubt Offerman was with us in '95 but I'm more so commenting on how he was a part of that brief offensive explosion the royals had the years before Sweeney's injuries and the trades of Damon, Offerman, Dye, and of course the big guy Beltran.
