ok i think i get it maybe but can someone please explain exactly what "Out of Options" means in this case?
Posted by: GoSoX | February 02, 2009 at 09:32 AM
It means that if a team wants to send these players to the minors, they have to pass through waivers first.

"ok i think i get it maybe but can someone please explain exactly what "Out of Options" means in this case?"
Out of Options means that they cannot be sent down to the minors without clearing waivers.

good to know that Derek Lowe our #1 starter and Mike Gonzalez our closer are out of options. Man I was getting worried about that. Why list those players??

"Can George Kottaras make it one the big league roster over Bard?"
Thats possible but probly wont happen cuz of experience and $. Bard will ost likely be better.
Oh so, its basically that they would need to be DFA or traded if they dont make the roster?

"Can George Kottaras make it one the big league roster over Bard?"
Anything is possible. However, Bard does have experience as Boston's catcher (albeit for 12 games). He has more big league experience, so barring a deal for Salty, Max Ramirez, or Teagarden, expect Bard to be Varitek's backup.
Would Andy Marte bring in the kind of numbers that Alex Cora would? Or is he better? I haven't really followed his career since he was traded by Atlanta. Would he be a viable trade option for Boston as the reserve infielder (contingent on a Lugo trade)?

Franklin Gutierrez (OF) Seattle
That's why the Indians dealt him in the Joe Smith trade.

Or they could just cut Bard, since his deal is non-guaranteed

"Or they could just cut Bard, since his deal is non-guaranteed"
Is Varitek's deal guaranteed?
Because Bard is the better catcher of the two.

Giants:
Nate Schierholtz; Travis Ishikawa; Fred Lewis; possibly Jack Taschner

I think Albert Pujols may be out of options as well.

I wonder if Melky would clear waivers. Anybody know the time it takes before a player officially "cleared waivers"? Isn't it like 3 days?

tim you miss the marlins
robert andino is out of option

Shane Costa from the Royals is out of options. I don't have a link but I talked to him personally. lol.

"I wonder if Melky would clear waivers. Anybody know the time it takes before a player officially "cleared waivers"? Isn't it like 3 days?"
IMO Melky would never clear waivers.
Trying to slip cheap guys with tons of upside through waivers generally doesn't work. Melky isn't a bust yet.
But yes, its 3 days.

D-Lowe just signed a major league deal and is a 12-year MLB vet - why would he ever agree to a contract that would allow him to be sent to the minors?
Posted by: cjhel | February 02, 2009 at 10:31 AM
I can remove the vets with 5+ years service time if that helps you guys.
I appreciate the tips but can only add guys to this list when I have a link to major website saying it.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | February 02, 2009 at 10:45 AM
This is from an old prospectus article:
"there is a limit to how many times a team can option a player down. Once a player gets a major-league contract (viz. "is added to the 40-man roster") he is typically eligible for optional assignment in three different seasons. He can be optioned down and called back up as many times as the club likes in each year, but the club only has that right in three individual seasons."
Exceptions: On 40 man, optioned to minors, spends less than 20 total days there (could get a 4th option year). On 40 man, used options in 3 years, but has less than 5 years in pro ball (could get a 4th, or very rarely a 5th).
Summary: Once placed on the 40 man, a player can generally have only 3 seasons where he spends time in the minors.
Posted by: andrewberg7 | February 02, 2009 at 11:02 AM
OPTIONS:
once a player is added to a team' 40-man roster they can be "optioned" to the minors three times. so all players start with three options.
a team can only be charged with one option per season. in other words a team can demote player X twenty times this season, but they are only charged with one option.
if a player starts year in minors, and is later added to the 40-man roster and promoted to the majors the team is only charged an option if the player is demoted AFTER being added to the 40-man roster.
a team is not charged an option if the player is in the minors for less than 20 days.
a team can not option a plyer with at least 5 years of service time.
anything i am leaving out?
Posted by: James | February 02, 2009 at 11:05 AM
Pujols is NOT out of options actually....
for the Tribe, Edward Mujica is also out of options. He's fighting for the last bullpen spot with about 6 guys....
Posted by: Hermie13 | February 02, 2009 at 11:48 AM
"Trying to slip cheap guys with tons of upside through waivers generally doesn't work. Melky isn't a bust yet."
He's a bust. He's not improved at all the past 2 years; in fact he's only gotten worse.
Posted by: icedrake523 | February 02, 2009 at 11:48 AM
"Pujols is NOT out of options actually...."
Pujols has 8 years of service time. Teams can't option a player with at least 5 years of service.
so. yeah, Pujols is out of options.

"Pujols has 8 years of service time. Teams can't option a player with at least 5 years of service.

Yes, they can be optioned down. The player just has to consent to be optioned down if he has lots of service time.
This potentially came up with the Giants and Zito last year(who has all his options).

Funny, the Red Sox front office doesn't seem to think so. But you know more than they do about the inner workings of the club and baseball in general. Amazing.
Posted by: grandmasterb | February 02, 2009 at 12:23 PM
Phil Stockman (Braves) will be interesting. He's got great stuff, but has had trouble staying healthy. Braves have too much RH RP, so he may be made available. Could be a nice pickup for someone.
Posted by: AtlantaMike | February 02, 2009 at 12:26 PM
And you can throw out the "opinion" baloney all day, but the simple fact is that the Sox did give Tek a two year deal @ 8 million+. They have not been shy about letting star players go. They obviously still view Jason as an asset and have treated him as such.
Posted by: grandmasterb | February 02, 2009 at 12:28 PM
If Melky were to be placed through waivers, there would be a lot of teams that would take him for nothing. I can think of quite a few teams that would take him as their 4th OF. Now, he doesn't have "tons of upside" like someone said earlier, but I would be shocked if he cleared waivers.
Posted by: Papelboner | February 02, 2009 at 12:43 PM
There's not gonna be many official sites listing the players that are out of options.
For the Dodgers I think Repko and Abreu might be out of options.
Posted by: NedCollettiClueless | February 02, 2009 at 12:46 PM
Those of you making sarcastic comments about options might want to read the rules about what "out of options" means before posting.
Anyway, for the Dodgers, from reports I've read, Abreu and Repko still have at least 2 options left. However, Delwyn Young is definitely out of options (and not listed on Tim's list).

Chad Gaudin isn't out of options. On the posting three weeks ago on Cubs.com, they only listed Angel Guzman, Rich Hill, Felix Pie and Ronny Cedeno. I didn't see Wuertz or Gaudin listed.
Here's the posting : "Guzman will likely be in the Cubs' bullpen in 2009, one, because he's finally healthy after surgery on both his right shoulder and elbow, but also because he's out of options. (Other Cubs out of options include Pie, Ronny Cedeno and Rich Hill). Samardzija could be in the 'pen with the big league team or start at Triple-A Iowa, depending on what the Cubs need."
Don't see Gaudin listed there, so I don't know where he became "out of options"?
Posted by: Eric | February 02, 2009 at 01:09 PM
More proof that Chad Gaudin isn't out of options:(Taken from today's story on Rich Hill being traded) :
"Angel Guzman is the only player remaining of the quartet out of options, and he will contend for a spot in the Cubs' bullpen"
Posted by: Eric | February 02, 2009 at 01:13 PM
Giants: Jack Taschner- I can't yet confirm it, but I think Taschner has no options left. He has less than 3 years major league service time yet qualified as a super-two this year and has been in the organization for 10 seasons including 4 up and down with the Giants. http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090116&content_id=3747235&vkey=news_sf&fext=.jsp&c_id=sf

Fellow Yankee fans: How would you feel about a Melky-for-Andy Marte trade? It looks like the Yanks have soured on Melky, especially with Gardner around as a fourth OF and Jackson primed to make an impact as early as this year.
Further, Andy Marte is still full of potential, and he could fill in throughout the infield like Wilson Betemit did last year. He has a lot more upside than Cody Ransom, too.

The Red Sox are going to have to trade or waive someone. Not even counting Buchholz and Bowden, they've got 13 arms that belong on a major league roster:
Beckett, Josh
Matsuzaka, Daisuke
Papelbon, Jonathan
Smoltz, John
Penny, Brad
Wakefield, Tim
Saito, Takashi
Okajima, Hideki
Lopez, Javier
Delcarmen, Manny
Lester, Jon
Ramírez, Ramón
Masterson, Justin

Slightly off topic but it has to do with the rules for roster management, so it's tangentially related to options. How is it that Varitek has not been added to the Red Sox roster thus requiring a roster move? Does a team have a number of days that they are allowed before having to add a newly signed player to the Roster?
Posted by: MickS | February 02, 2009 at 04:36 PM
http://thecubreporter.com/cubs-40-man-roster
Neal Cotts, Chad Gaudin, Angel Guzman, Koyie Hill, Geovany Soto, Joey Gathright and Brad Snyder
plus David Patton is a Rule 5 pickup.
and to the person quoting a Muskat article and wondering why Gaudin isn't included, it's because she's a hack.

For the people that ask why would they list stars and #1 or #2 starters as being out of options... Here's the reason.
In 2008 - Phillies Brett Myers started horridly. They sent him to the minors to either clear his head or work out his mechanics...
The fact is, they would not have been able to if he did not agree to it. Had he refused, the Phillies would have either kept him in the Majors and watch his decline, or drop him or trade him.
The result was that he went down to 2 weeks and came back one of the best 2nd half pitchers and helped the Phillies win a World Series.
