Stark's Latest: Keppinger, Baker, Phillies

ESPN.com's Jayson Stark has a new blog post up.  Some of this is old news, but probably worth revisiting...

  • The Reds are dangling infielder Jeff Keppinger, with the Red Sox and Astros as possible suitors.
  • The Red Sox and Astros have also checked in on Colorado's Jeff Baker, along with the Phillies.  But, the Rockies are reportedly demanding a "quality young starter" in return.
  • The Mets expressed interest in Ronny Paulino before he was dealt to the Giants (then moved swiftly to the Marlins).
  • The Phillies continue to shop around for a right-handed reserve outfielder.

"The Phillies continue to shop around for a right-handed reserve outfielder."

Really? John Mayberry Jr is having a pretty decent spring, why wouldn't they just give him a shot? The real crux is that the Phillies presumably want to deal Jenkins, but no one is stupid enough to take him and the close to 7 million owed to him.

They want a quality young starter for a .260 hitting utility man with marginal power? Really? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahah...hahahahahahahahaha...stop, you're killin' me. I can't breathe.

Was thinking the same thing Little bear. Baker's career line looks like a mirror of Willy Mo Pena, whom they unloaded just in time.

Why would they want baker period, much less give up a "quality young starter" for him when they have multiple AAAA type guys just like him in Chris Carter, Jeff Bailey and Jonathon Van Every that are in the same age group, play the same positions 9ex 3rd) and they even take a walk sometimes and strike out less? Sounds like some Rockies wishful thinking to me.

Will the White Sox finally have a place to send Brian Anderson? He's a solid player who I think is out of options, still cheap, under team control, won't have a roster spot in Chicago and the Sox wouldn't ask for much of anything in return.

johns, the only reason I can think of is as a replacement for Cora until Lugo is ready and assuming Baldelli can't take over the 4th outfield spot. But if the Rockies want anything more than a AAA scrub their out of their minds.

If I was Ed Wade, I'd offer them Brad James, and that would be it. Seems like a fair deal to me.

That makes kind of sense also if the Sox are looking to save 2 roster spots (say Nick green and Chris Carter) and replace it with one, like Baker instead. But I would think that a guy, say Bloomquisk in KC that is being overpaid (by KC standards) signed for 2/3m and could probably be had for almost nothing, plays 7 positions and gives you speed would be much more desirable to fill a utility role. Plus, it was rumored that Boston was after him anyway after the season if Boston would have been able to unload Lugo.
