SATURDAY, 2:01am: The Giants quickly turned Paulino around in a trade to the Florida Marlins for right-handed pitcher Hector Correa, MLB.com reports.
Correa, 21, has a career 8-10 record with a 4.52 ERA in 34 games (29 starts) in the minor leagues.
Paulino will likely be the backup catcher to John Baker. Paulino, 27, hit .278 in 304 games with Pittsburgh from 2005 to 2008.
FRIDAY, 9:08am: According to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Phillies acquired lefty reliever Jack Taschner today for catcher Ronny Paulino. The Phils had acquired Paulino from the Pirates on December 10th.
Taschner, 31 in April, allowed lefties to hit .279/.339/.394 line last year. They knocked him around in '07 even worse, so he's not the perfect fill-in for J.C. Romero.

This is going to be one of those trades that both teams are unhappy with.

I like this trade for the Giants.
Opens up a potential Molina trade at the deadline without having to move Sandoval off 3B.

Manuel must not have liked Paulino's attitude. He couldn't beat out Coste, and with Marson at AAA Ronny had no role.
Taschner looks to be pretty terrible, but this may be a sign that Happ is headed for the rotation and Park to the pen. Which I'd support

I think the rotation is Happ's most likely destination.

Taschner has a hot wife. Hate to see him leave SF.
Posted by: Mags | March 27, 2009 at 09:54 PM
I'm just really glad that Taschner is gone so there is a good chance Luis Perdomo can make the bullpen. He's a flamethrower. also I'll take Paulino over Holm any day as a back-up catcher

So does this basically mean Ohman is going to the Giants? I think I read here last week that trading Taschner was the step to signing him, not sure if it's true or I read it wrong.
Posted by: thegamev1 | March 27, 2009 at 09:58 PM
I really like this move, because Paulino is an upgrade over holm, tasch had overstayed his time, and now I think we will sign Ohman on a one year 2 mil contract.
Posted by: Leland11 | March 27, 2009 at 09:59 PM
I believe the Giants will be in on Ohman now. That'd be a solid signing for them.

No Baseball Blogs Weigh In today? Is Cork sick?

This is more than I expected the Giants would get for Taschner given his recent performance...Still, he has shown promise in the past so I'm not overly surprised.
From the Giants standpoint, this certainly provides them with more options headed out of camp as well as mid season. I think Will Ohman is more of a possibility now, but certainly not a definite at this point...There is still the matter of Justin Miller & Brandon Medders incredible springs and not being on the 40 man roster as well as what to do with Luis Perdomo.
As for Paulino, he does provide the Giants with a very solid backup and the potential to move Molina later this season. A Molina trade would still depend on a lot of "IF's"...Not likely I imagine

Indications are that the Giants aren't done dealing tonight. stay tuned, I guess, though no major names.

Can't wait for Delgado to smash the longest home run in citi field history off of tashner!

Paulino flipped the Marlins for a minor league pitcher.

Paulino traded to the Marlins for Hector Correa...
and Midtown, you're about 2 yrs late with that joke!

Wow. That was unexpected. Now the trade makes sense, though, so I guess it should've been expected. Well, this guy DOES have 152 career strikeouts in 143.1 minor league innings, but he's also walked 47 batters, hasn't pitched above class A (the low one), has given up 14 home runs, has a career WHIP of 1.54, and has a career ERA of 4.52. Now, scouts may love this guy and he may be high upside, but he's already had injury troubles and he wasn't taken until the 4th round. I'd say at this point the odds of him ever making it to the majors are slim. Though I'm no expert, just an observer.

The Giants made the moves to clear a roster spot. Taschner really isn't that good, and is replaceable. signing Ohman seems to be a logical next move.
Posted by: nostocksjustbonds | March 28, 2009 at 01:46 AM
Have you seen Nolan Ryan lately, he wants more than a happy meal, we're talking a Big Mac extra value meal super-sized. In all seriousness, Will Ohman looks like the next logical move. Ohman prefers a contender on the west coast and the Giants need lefty relief help. Getting rid of that salary for Taschner makes it easier.

You're right midtown. EVERYONE knows Paulino and Baker are light years better than Salty and Teagarden. LOL!
Why would a GM trade one of his top trading chips for something OTHER than a solid return?
Posted by: V | March 28, 2009 at 09:06 AM
First thing I thought about when i saw it wasn't the trade, but the 2:01 am time it was posted by Tim in here... I guess to stay on top of everything (and he does a great job) you must always be ready
Posted by: xxgochisox09 | March 28, 2009 at 09:15 AM
I think nostocksjustbonds is right, at this point, with the extra spot now available on the 40man roster, trying to sign Ohman is he next logical move.

"remember these are the Giants we're talking about. Brian Sabean loves washed up old players."
That's original. Check the roster these days, it's a little different. Maybe it's time to actually give sabean credit for something. He dumped a player he had no use for for a player about 10 years younger with "high upside," as one commenter posted. Say what you will, but Sabean has set this team up for success in the next few years with the youngsters he has down in the minors.

Mid Town:
You know if the front office felt Sandoval could be an average or better Catcher getting him a positive MLB reputation at that position before Posey gets to The Show would be a pretty shrewd medium and long term move. I agree with what has to be sarcasm that Lowell would make the least sense of the possible options.
****
Over all I like this combination of moves for the Giants. They just converted a bothersome surplus into what could be a long term asset. Even if there is no Ohman signing this is deserves a “Well done” to the new mind switched Sabean.
