Heyman On Rockies, Wedge, Strasburg

The latest from SI.com's Jon Heyman...

  • Heyman says Rockies manager Clint Hurdle "appears to be on the firing line" after the team's 12-18 start.  GM Dan O'Dowd called the speculation "unfair at this time," talking to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post.  O'Dowd's job seems safe and he could direct a "July tradeoff."  Heyman speculates on Garrett Atkins and Huston Street as candidates.  Heyman doesn't mention them, but Brad Hawpe and Jason Marquis seem like other possibilities.
  • Indians manager Eric Wedge, on the other hand, does not appear likely to be fired.
  • Heyman says Stephen Strasburg is still expected to aim for $50MM after the Nationals select him first overall in June.

Wedge should have been fired after blowing the ALCS in 2007, if not sooner.

...not just because the Tribe lost the ALCS, by the way. Wedge has always been a questionable manager, and the way he handled the ALCS should have been the last straw.

Question: If Strasburg got 50 million, would that set a precedent? I can't think of another massive rookie contract of that nature, except maybe for Longoria, but I don't count that as he had minot league experience and technically was a veteran (albeit of 6 games).

right...cause taking a young team that close to the WS against a veteran championship club is totally a reason to loose your job.

If only the Rox would have sold on Atkins in the off-season. Pennies on the dollar for the guy now.

And whether playing in Oakland is the only reason for Holliday's bad start or not, this is more leverage to use against Colorado when making a trade. Holliday has indirectly hurt Atkins value just as much as Atkins poor play.

Don't forget how bad that team was until the end of the season. They got a bit of a spark when they got Lofton and called up Cabrera, and that, combined with some luck, took them pretty far. But they did it despite having Wedge as a manager, not because of him. He makes horrible decisions, and does not know how to manage a team. His teams start off slow (at best) almost every year because they are totally unprepared. His lineup changes/platoons are ridiculous and don't help anybody. He doesn't know when to take pitchers out and when not to (I consider his decision to send Sabathia out to pitch the 7th inning in game 5 of the ALCS to be the turning point of the series). He doesn't understand that Dellucci is a horrible player. He doesn't know how to deal with young talent (what good is it to call up LaPorta and Valbuena while they were hot in the minors if Wedge is just going to bench them after a couple of games, so that they get rusty and lose their confidence?)

Getting a little lucky and getting a mediocre team to the ALCS one year out of seven years or whatever it has been which have otherwise been "disappointing" doesn't prove anything.

How many years does Hawpe have left on his contract?? IF he is really a trade candidate I think the Braves should look into making a deal for him! He'd be the right-handed power bat they're missing...

*ATTENTION FRANK WREN*.. GET ON THE HORN!!!

"He'd be the right-handed power bat they're missing..."

Last time I checked Hawpe bats and throws left-handed.

Lay off the braves fans...they don't actually watch baseball, so why should they be expected to know anything about it

Garret Anderson is currently slugging .277 -- not quite sure how you can say Hawpe wouldn't be a better right-handed power option* ;)

(and yes, I know he's left handed)

I bet Strasburg ends up a bust. There Is No Such Thing As A Pitching Prospect, after all.

"If only the Rox would have sold on Atkins in the off-season. Pennies on the dollar for the guy now."

Yeah, they really should've pursued dealing Atkins to Minnesota or something, but they never really seemed to make him that available after Holliday was dealt.

Atkins is a below average defensive player at both first and third base, and his offensive production has steadily decline for four straight seasons now.

Look at his wOBA's from 2006-2009: .410, .368, .337, and he's down to .273 this season.

His walk rate has declined and his strikeout rate has increased slightly, and this season his line drive rate has been WAYYY down.

I'm not sure that the Rockies could land much of anything for Atkins anymore.

And Colorado REALLY needs to get some value out of Huston Street, because otherwise they just dealt Holliday for Carlos Gonzalez and a AAAA starter.

It absolutely sets a prescendent. Boras will likely use the Strasburg pick in an attempt to try and get his draft picks as close to market value. As for Strasburg, I can't help but shake the feeling that he's going to be productive, but nowhere near the Cooperstown Bound Pitcher that the Mainstream Media is making him out to be.

"And Colorado REALLY needs to get some value out of Huston Street, because otherwise they just dealt Holliday for Carlos Gonzalez and a AAAA starter."

I agree with this.

I could see Indians, Tigers, Rangers, Cubs, or Angels, assuming all these teams stay in contention.

I would definitely welcome Street as an addition to the Cubs, considering the way that essentially the whole rotation outside of Guzman has started.

Marmol doesn't belong in the closer role with his current command issues, Gregg is more of a good set up man than a closer, and guys like Patton, Heilman and Cotts have all been very unimpressive.

If the price was reasonable, say something like Tyler Colvin and Junior Lake, then I would definitely push for a deal.

Fangraphs lists Atkins as the 2nd least valuable 3rb baseman behind Wigginton. At this point, I don't think Atkins is tradeable. They are better off convincing him to accept an assignment to AAA and passing him through waivers. I don't think anyone would pick him up.

They really should have traded him to Minnesota when they had the chance. They should have taken Perkins or Blackburn. Oh well, now they are stuck with him.

Although the Cubs might need to trade for a starter, depending on how long Zambrano is supposed to be out.

I don't have confidence in Harden not getting hurt (and Dempster is also an above average injury risk and had a massive innings jump last year) and a rotation of
Dempster-Lilly-Marshall-Wells-Heilman is a HUGE problem.

HA! whatever, Hawpe is left-handed, so give me a freakin break. Show's you how much us Braves fans watch the Rockies...atleast our manager isn't on the hot seat.

Or should I say..."on the firing line"

I'm starting to get to that point where I feel like the 1-2 punches of Chciago and St. Louis are going to determine the division.

If Harden/Zambrano can stay healthy and be more productive than Wainwright/Carpenter, then I feel pretty good about our chances.

But letting Gaudin go really hurt our starting pitching depth, and the Cubs don't have any young guys in the minor leagues who could come up and contribute, really.

I think there's a decent chance that the team trades for a mid level starting pitcher.

Peavy would be a bigger possibility if the Cubs had more pieces, but lets be honest: Peavy would look really, really good in Chicago's rotation right now.

"I think there's a decent chance that the team trades for a mid level starting pitcher."

I'm almost certain Bedard is pitching somewhere in Chicago midseason. Or the Mets, depending on if Oliver Perez can rebound and be decent.

My only concern with the Cubs trading for Bedard is that the Cubs would then have both Bedard and Harden as free agents after the season, and the team would almost assuredly have to resign one of them.

Then again, the idea of a Zambrano, Dempster, Bedard, Harden and Lilly rotation is absolutely scary, and he's a guy that the Cubs could likely afford.

I also agree that the Mets and White Sox could look into Bedard, because both teams appear to have some serious rotational depth issues, and Bedard is likely to be the best affordable top of the rotation guy out there, as guys like Halladay, Lee and/or Peavy will cost a haul.

"My only concern with the Cubs trading for Bedard is that the Cubs would then have both Bedard and Harden as free agents after the season, and the team would almost assuredly have to resign one of them."

Giving multi-year deals to either of those guys is a HUGE risk. However, had the Cubs not given Dempster his way-above-market extension last offseason, I would've said the Cubs would be smart to take a risk on one of the guys. But, with the Dempster extension, I just don't know.

Andrew Cashner + Tyler Colvin + Junior Lake for Bedard. Fair?

"Andrew Cashner + Tyler Colvin + Junior Lake for Bedard. Fair?"

No.

And Strasburg ain't getting $50M. I can see him getting $15M-20M, but I doubt he wants to risk being Matt Harrington version 2.0.

Why should any team exceed the $6 million last year's #1 received?

Strausberg has exactly ZERO professional innings. If he doesn't want the $6 or $7 million, let him and the rodent known as bor-ASS return to college for another year.

I just don't understand how any rational logical person can think this college guy deserves 3 x or 4 x or 5 x or even TWO x more money than last year's #1.

The whole reason of the draft is to keep contract cost under control and considering paying this guy the amounts being bandied around is utterly stupid.

Nice potential but last I looked, potential means "has not done anything yet".

"Why should any team exceed the $6 million last year's #1 received?"

Because sitting at 100 mph WITH COMMAND doesn't grow on trees?

Strasburg is worth more than twice Tim Beckham. Without a doubt.

Strasburg does not deserve $50 M. He does not deserve $20M. He's never pitched a game and we are talking about millions of signing bonus dollars. Scott Boras is an idiot and this is beginning to be seen around the league. Look at his clients, most of them are either cheaters or were cheaters or are currently falling off. There are literally 10-20 guys with the fastball Strasburg has. He could flop and get shelled regularly and I'll watch it happen.

Scott Boras is about as far from an idiot as it possible to be.

"No."

That's some great insight..

"And Strasburg ain't getting $50M. I can see him getting $15M-20M, but I doubt he wants to risk being Matt Harrington version 2.0"

Although I totally agree with this.

What leverage does Strasburg really have?

If he were to turn down a $15-20M offer, he'd end up pitching in some independent league, risking his health to try to milk out a couple more million.

That just makes no sense when you're not already incredibly wealthy.

Strasburg will take whatever the best offer is that Washington will be willing to give.

You just don't turn down $15-20M to play professional baseball when you haven't pitched a single pitch professionally.

Why offer strausberg even $15 million?

This is just another ploy by bor-ASS to inflate future contracts for the unproven, non-professional athletes who come through the draft.

Boston was great with matsuzaka. They bid on a pitcher who was expected to be instantly successful because he had already dominated in japan and showed composure and skill against professionals in the WBC.

College and high school players with big talent have, and I am repeating myself for those who are drinking the bor-ASS cool aid, proven nothing.

Sorry, but no hitting air farce is far different than no hitting a high A or double A or a major league team. I'd be surprised if just ONE player from air farce sees time in the bigs let alone has a career...and this is something people seem to be ignoring.

Beckham received a $6.15 million SIGNING BONUS!

With the amount of money Mark Prior and Mark Teixeira earned over their first 6 professional seasons and the amount Daisuke Matsuzaka signed for with no experience in the US, there is precedent for the amounts from $30 to $52 million over 6 years that have been posited.

Many would try to say that Matsuzaka pitched professionally in Japan for many seasons, but Matsuzaka never threw 103 mph, had a 10/1 k/bb rate, had a 17 k/9 rate, or threw a no hitter.

Strasburg showed great composure and dominated against international competition in Beijing as the only amateur on the US squad and dominated in other international competition with wins over Japan and Taiwan in 2008.

Strasburg was 2-0 in 4 starts with a 1.33 ERA, 39 strike outs against just 4 walks in 27 innings for Team USA prior to the Olympics.

Strasburg is widely expected to join the "Natinals" rotation in 2009 and be an impact pitcher in 2010.

While I dont believe it is likely that Strasburg will sign for $52 million over 6 years, I also do not believe that the "Natinals" will be able to sign Strasburg for $10-15 million as some hopeful "Natinals" fans and their discredited former GM have claimed they will.

It is far more likely that Strasburg will sign for a signing bonus of $10-12 million with $20-$24 million of guaranteed money as part of a 6 year/$30+ million deal.

Why should any team pay this much?

Even if he did produce the numbers you state it was against PRE-olympic talent. Furthermore, Matsuzaka pitching against japanese players is far more indicative of his talent than strausberg pitching against the local college team. Sorry, no comparison.

If he doesn't want to sign for relative money based on historical signings, sit out and re-enter next year. And if he does sit out, I shall then wish he becomes matt harrington 2.0.

Sidebar, I can just imagine what the roto world/prospect lovers would be saying if alex rodriguez came up through the minors today and slugged .650 in triple A as an 19 year old!

.650!? Give him $100 million!

And what's your point? That 100 million would've been a massive steal? I agree.

But regardless, I don't think Strasburg will get more than 15 mil.
