Frank Thomas says he's "close" to retiring, according to ESPN.com. The two-time MVP said there's only about a five percent chance he returns, but he never wants to unretire, so he's intent on thinking his decision through. Thomas believes he could still play in the major leagues and says he's in good shape.
The Big Hurt had eight homers and a .723 OPS last year with the Blue Jays and A's. He has a career .974 OPS and his 521 homers place him 18th on the all-time list.

if the White Sox fall out of it I hope they can trade Thome and sign Thomas just to finish off the year so he can retire as a Sock.

Great stats, bad clutch hitter.

Unlike Sosa, Frank Thomas can truly sit back and patiently wait for his induction to the HOF.

saw frank out and about in the northern suburbs the other day, he is definitely in playing shape.

I like how Frank Thomas is making it seem like it was HIS decision not to play this year when in reality no one wanted him.
However, I do think that itd be nice to see the White Sox offer him a pro rated league minimum to play a few games at the end of this season so he can retire as he began.

I've been watching Sox games for over 40 years and here is a list of players (off the top of my head) I'd rather see at the plate down by one run in the 9th with the bases loaded and two outs:
Harold Baines
Dick Allen
Robin Ventura
Joe Crede
Jermaine Dye
Jim Thome
Paul Konerko
Bo Jackson
Carlton Fisk
Albert Bell
Jorge Bell
Richie Zisk
Oscar Gamble
Steve Kemp
Julio Franco
Jorge Orta
Lance Johnson
A.J.
Ivan Calderon
Tim Raines
Greg Walker
Greg Luzinski
Bill Melton
Ellis Burks
Ralph Garr
Tom Paciorek
Rudy Law
Ken Henderson
Scott Podsednik
Tad Iguchi
To be fair, here is a list of players I would not want to see hitting in that spot ahead of Thomas:
Ron Karkovice
Ron Kittle
Lamar Johnson
Chet Lemon (maybe)
Josh Fields
Brian Anderson
Ozzie Guillen
Joey Cora
Roy Smalley
Steve Sax
Frank Thomas was an amazing hitter, no question ...but he was also one of the worst hitters I've ever seen with the game on the line.
And please, save your stats.. I actually watched the games and he usually didn't take the bat off of his shoulder under pressure and either walked or struck out.
