Aaron Harang has been solid, if its him the Reds are a wiser organization then i thought
Posted by: 04Forever | June 22, 2009 at 12:07 PM
I'd guess it's Arroyo....though with that contract, he'd be hard to move unless for someone else with a big contract like a Gary Matthews or Aaron Rowand (not saying either is a fair deal, but just examples).
Aaraon Harang would be an interesting move. They'd pretty much be giving up on 2009....but could really set themselves up for a great run in 2010. Cueto and Volquez when healthy are still a solid 1-2 punch. If they get a decent pitcher in return for Harang their rotation should be good enough to win still.
Adding a big bat to that lineup with a healthy Votto and Encarnacion could really make some noise in the NL Central.
I'd love my Indians to try and make a run at Harang....

If the Reds put Harang on the market, he could land them a haul.
He's one of the better pitchers in the game, he's under control for 2010 at just $12.5M, and he has an option for 2011 at $12.75M with a $2M buyout.
2008 was clearly a fluke, as his FIP's clearly show it to be an outlier, as his 2005-2009 FIP's show: 3.67, 3.68, 3.71, 4.79, 3.68
Essentially, he's been the same (high) quality pitcher for four of five seasons, and he's fixed whatever plagued him last season.
If the Reds choose to deal Arroyo instead, they won't get even close to what they'll get for Harang.
Arroyo has lost the ability to miss bats, seemingly, and he's pretty much fallen apart this year in every facet of pitching. He won't land them much with his 5.42 FIP.

Reason No. 482 why Ozzie Guillen is an idiot:
"Ozzie Guillen would endorse an extension for Scott Podsednik, according to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune."
Posted by: skkrman7482 | June 22, 2009 at 01:08 PM
I'm not agreeing with Ozzie. I place a lot of blame on him for the awful deals that moved Javy and Swisher at a fraction of their value.
Nor do I agree with him in this case, it's been only 200 PA and you just don't extend players like Pods.
But to fair, Podsednik has been absolutely huge for them this year. They desperately needed a leadoff hitter, and he's come in a posted a .317/.372/.412 line with 10 steals and a good +5.9 UZR/150 so far this year. He's on pace for a 2.0-2.5 WAR season, which would be the second best of his career. He's been huge for them, but you can't get too excited and hand him a job for next year.
Posted by: scribbletone | June 22, 2009 at 01:20 PM
Ozzie's not an idiot. He is using this opportunity to praise a player who is performming off the chart. It's not like Williams is going to lock up an injury prone 34 yr old with questionable legs when there is no pressing need to do so. Why wouldn't Ozzie say that he want Pods (the way he performing today) for next year?

Get Harang out of GAB and into Chavez Ravine...both he and the Dodgers take a giant leap forward.
Posted by: parrothead8 | June 22, 2009 at 01:32 PM
Scribble - I agree that the Swisher trades (esp the one to get him) were ill conceived, but I think it's a bit premature to announce the Vazquez trade a debacle. Flowers still looks very interesting. There is now a long history of Vazquez folding under pressure. I'm not sorry he's gone and the return may still work out very well. BTW - White Sox pitching now 2nd in AL in ERA.

How would the Braves getting KC baggage going to be a good deal for the Braves. I dont see any upside for the Braves out of this one. He is over paid version of Frency so why not keep with guy who is getting paid less.
Posted by: KC | June 22, 2009 at 01:40 PM
ha, Harang with the Dodgers would be sweet....but what are they giving up? Kemp and McDonald?
The Reds won't just part with Harang for the sake of doing it. They'd have to be blown away with an offer.
Now you could get Bronson Arroyo. With Milton on the DL and McDonald struggling, he could be a good 5th starter.
Will be interesting once Manny is back. If Milton or someone else isn't pitching up to par, would a Pierre for Arroyo and a prospect work? Money is fairly even and the Reds need a LF/CFer and leadoff hitter bad. Pierre would fill both those needs.
Arroyo out of Cincy should improve as well. His ERA over a run lower on the road than at home.

Wow... haven't looked if they match up anywhere, but Harang would look super in a Phillies uniform
Posted by: Schmidty | June 22, 2009 at 02:17 PM
The Reds should be fine once Votto comes back, if not they will have the next few years to compete with that impressive core of players. Try taking away Braun or Pujols away from their teams for a month and see what happens, I'd say they're doing pretty good considering their injuries.
It's going to take some work for this team to make the postseason, but imagine a rotation of Harang, Volquez, and Cueto in a playoff series with their light's out bullpen.

James McDonald was lights out with great numbers across the board during his latest stint in the Minors. Great strikeout and ratio numbers...
Posted by: MikeClarke | June 22, 2009 at 02:50 PM
McDonald, DeWitt, and a young arm like Elbert or Withrow should net the Dodgers Harang.
DeWitt would vastly upgrade the Reds at 3B, with EE moving to LF...
He could also move to 2B with Phillips sliding over to SS in 2010.

"ha, Harang with the Dodgers would be sweet....but what are they giving up? Kemp and McDonald?"
Kemp for Harang? No way does LA make that deal.
Kemp is beginning to tap into that massive potential that everyone used to talk about.
He's posted a big .318/.382/.482 line so far this year along with 18 steals in 21 attempts. And his defense in center field has been nothing short of spectacular (+16.4 UZR/150 this year).
Kemp's 3.4 WAR this year is already higher than the 3.3 WAR he posted last year, and he's on pace to come close to being a 6.5-7.0 WAR guy this season if he keeps it up.
As good as Harang is, Kemp is already probably the more valuable player, and that doesn't even factor the fact that Kemp doesn't hit arbitration until next season.
I think that Kemp is totally off limits. People need to realize that he's as good as Adam Jones, if not better.
"McDonald, DeWitt, and a young arm like Elbert or Withrow should net the Dodgers Harang."
Maybe, but it wouldn't shock me in the least if the Reds wanted more from LA or received more from a different club.
Posted by: scribbletone | June 22, 2009 at 03:05 PM
McDonald was great in the minors, but he needs to show it at the ML level.
And McDonald, DeWitt, and Elbert/Withrow woudn't be enough for Harang. Not with how DeWitt has played this year or with how McDonald has pitched.
DeWitt has 2 HRs in AAA this year and his OPS is under .800. The Reds would want more for Harang. DeWitt is hitting only .214 in June as well....
Elbert is a nice prospect though, as is McDonald....but still think the Reds could get more for Harang.
Though that's not a bad start. If DeJesus wasn't hurt that could have been an option as they could use a SS.
Posted by: Hermie13 | June 22, 2009 at 03:14 PM
But the bottom line is, DeWitt wouldn't 'vastly' upgrade the Reds at 3B....
Posted by: Hermie13 | June 22, 2009 at 03:15 PM
A #1-2 starting pitcher is more valualbe than Kemp. Not saying Kemp isn't a young stud, but I'd take Harang over him every time right now, especially with how Pierre has played and with manny coming back.
That being said, I don't see LA making that deal either. But that's almost what it would take to get Harang if you're the Dodgers. DeWitt just doesn't seem like enough even with some pitchers thrown in. His stock has really fallen.
Posted by: Hermie13 | June 22, 2009 at 03:17 PM
"Ozzie Guillen would endorse an extension for Scott Podsednik, according to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune."
If Podsednik gets an extension, then we must all question Kenny's competency as GM.
He's good, but this has career year written all over it.

"A 1-2 starting pitcher is more valualbe than Kemp. Not saying Kemp isn't a young stud, but I'd take Harang over him every time right now, especially with how Pierre has played and with manny coming back."
I totally agree that a TOR starter is more valuable than a star center fielder. Absolutely no way that they make that deal though.
Harang, at his best, is a 4.5-5.5 WAR player. Kemp is on pace to post a higher WAR than Harang this year, while Harang is making $11M and Kemp is making $465K.
When you factor in salaries, it's not even a discussion to me.
Kemp won't go anywhere unless it's for a comparable young stud, like off the top of my head, say, Ubaldo Jimenez.
Posted by: scribbletone | June 22, 2009 at 03:36 PM
Kemp wont go anywhere, I hope.
Pierre is a great 4th outfielder, I would be upset if he was moved for Washburn.
With Jones, Schimdt, and little salaries coming off the books, this would be the offseason to lock up all the kids.
Broxton, Bills, Kemp, Loney, Martin, and Ethier should all be given multiyear deals.
If you can spend obscene amounts of money on garbage, at least spend money on the kids.

FWIW
The Reds should extend Harang, he pitches well in a hostile environment.
The Reds are up and coming and if they fall out of it this year, they will most def be in it next year.
"Ozzie Guillen would endorse an extension for Scott Podsednik, according to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune."
I don't even understand!
Posted by: 661dodgerblue | June 22, 2009 at 03:50 PM
WAR is nice...but I highly doubt GMs look at that. They look at what will improve their team now and in the future.
Do agree that a Kemp for Harang deal isn't happening, but it has nothing to do with their WAR stats.
And isn't Jones still getting paid next year thanks to him agreeing to restructure his deal?
The schmidt money should help though.
Posted by: Hermie13 | June 22, 2009 at 04:43 PM
eh, the Reds really don't need to worry about extending Harang now. He's signed for next year with a team option for 2011. The option only becomes an issue if he's traded as it then becomes a mutual option.
The Reds would have a nice rotation for the next 2.5 years though with Harang, Volquez, and Cueto.....but they do need offense. Votto coming back isn't enough. Maybe Encarnacion...but he was struggling before the injury.
