ESPN.com's Buster Olney writes that it "is said by others" that Dodgers GM Ned Colletti is searching for pitching. Olney outlines the heavy workload endured by the Dodgers' bullpen early on, and wonders how it will hold up down the stretch.
Here's some other bits that Olney's heard:

I would love to see a swisher or nady for stokes or green between the NY clubs. Yanks are dying in the BP and the Mets lack power from 1b/OF
problem solved.

The Yanks' pen has a 2.63 ERA this month and has been getting progressively better all season. They could definitely use another arm, but they're not THAT desperate.

Do people, other than industry, pay for these columns?

As inconsistent as the Yankees' offense can be, I think they need to add rather than subtract a bat.
Posted by: Rich | June 20, 2009 at 11:49 AM
Rich, you realize that Nady coming back helps out a little bit with the bats of course
Obviously not a great hitter, but he definitely would help the club out

The yanks need bull pen help and the Braves need a bat. So would a Rafael Soriano or Mike Gonzalez for Swisher work. It would basically be a swap contracts are very similar.

I bet Pedro's throwing 86mph. About as hard as a decent high school kid. What a joke.
Like a hot babe, he's been catered to and surrounded by 'yes' people who have kissed his butt and told him what he's wanted to hear for so long that he has absolutely no grip on reality.
He turned down a $7m deal at the beginning of the season. I don't know who was stupid enough to offer that then, they must be even be more out of touch than Pedro.

"Negotiantions between Strasburg and the Nationals are off to a sluggish start" Does that mean Boras doesn't already have Lerner bent over a table while anally violating him?

Swisher is too valuable to trade away. Even when Nady coming back he will more than likely not be able to play the field. However, he can swing the bat and I would rather have him coming off the bench to pinch hit than to see Angel Berroa. Yanks lack a strong bat off the bench (not that they really have players that need to be pinch hit for though). If Arod is truly healthy then I suspect Berroa or Gardner to be the odd man out.

And obviously I meant Nady would still start and Nady would be the one not capable of fielding but would be able to pinch hit (my order of words could've been misleading).

Wow...I meant Swisher would still start. I just had a Molsons....that's like liquid crack. My bad.

If the Yanks would trade Nady or Swish to the Mets, I'd like to get Parnell + a hitting prospect in the process.
I'd like to see a trade with the Reds go down since they need some real help with their lineup as well. Swish or Nady for Arthur Rhodes or Nick Masset and a prospect like Drew Stubbs.

I personally see Berroa being the odd man out. Nady and Matsui are both suspect for playing the field which would give them no back-up outfielder if they were to send Gardner down. I would also hate to see Berroa pinch run and pinch hit instead of Gardner.

Maybe the Giants as well?
Swisher or Nady for Affeldt + prospect?
Posted by: Thee4stringking | June 20, 2009 at 03:39 PM
If the Yanks are going to trade with the Mets, I'd like Parnell + hitting prospect.
However, I think the Reds or the Giants are a far better trade partner.
Rhodes/Masset and Drew Stubbs for Nady/Swisher? or Affeldt + prospect for Nady/Swisher?

my bad, I just signed up, sorry for the triple post =P

I think the question is if they can a reliever + an OF prospect almost read for the majors for Nady or Swisher (like the Reds have), they should take it. In the long run, it doesn't hurt to get younger.

I thought Boston was abusing their BP until read that chart with the top 5 relievers all in the 27-30IP range already and then see that LAD and Philly already have 2 guys well over 35IP that they count on and have to have for serious help and LAD also has Broxton with 33IP, Atlanta's 3 effective relievers all have piled up 30+ innings, looks like some NL teams are already working on blowing out arms early.

Swisher definetly wouldn't be traded. Cash might field offers for Nady but his value is near zero and will stay there unless he shows he can at least be an offensive force. If he does prove to be a good bat then the Yanks might decide to keep him since they're fighting for the playoffs and beyond, Arod is struggling and we could use a righty w/ power.

Yeah, and our bullpen feels 1 man short of a complete staff.
Having a solid, veteran, stable reliever outside of Mo will do wonders for our pen (like affeldt or rhodes). I feel way too uneasy about which Phil Coke or David Robertson we are going to see every night. If we got a nice reliever like that along with a good hitting prospect like Drew Stubbs or Todd Frazier. I would be down in a second to give away one of our power hitters (i'd like to give away Matsui first but I doubt he has any value right now).
Also, remember Ajax is hitting .343 right now AAA, and he should be ripe to come up by late august-ish.

There are also rumors floating around of a possible Huston Street or Jose Valverde trade, all depending on if either team decides to pack it in for the season.
Posted by: Thee4stringking | June 20, 2009 at 07:01 PM
The only power hitters that could be traded are Matsui (damaged goods), Swisher (too valuable to us right now) and Nady (also damaged goods). The way our offense and pitching have been we really can't afford to trade away a bat unless we're getting something useful in return. Unless it's a salary dump we shouldn't expect anything of signifigance in return for either Nady or Matsui. Furthermore, the Yanks have had a way of making mediocre/below avg pitchers look like the 2nd coming of Don Drysdale.....we need as much offense as we can get.
A bullpen of Mo, Coke, Hughes, Aceves, Robertson, Bruney and maybe Tomko works for me. It's just a matter of them producing. Also, if Marte can return before the end of July then maybe he can help. As of now, with the mix I just mentioned, the bullpen has been great of late.

Just thinking aloud:
Why didn't Girardi allow Gardner to steal 3rd w/ zero out and Arod @ 1st and Jeter at bat? Gardner stole 2nd and it wasn't even close, the pitcher was wild and not throwing strikes and Jeter, a right handed batter, would've partially obstructed the catcher from making an easy throw. Arod isn't running like he use to and Jeter has a habit of hitting into double plays. Allow Gardner a shot at stealing 3rd early into Jeter's count and chanes are if Jeter hits into a double play (which he ends up doing) then Gardner has a great chance at scoring as long as it's not hit too hard. A waste of a well pitched game by AJ and company.

I agree YFS78, I wish we had a coach like Maddon rather than Joe Torre part 2.
It's generally known that aggressive base-running is usually successful in the end, thats why the rays are so successful.
I can't wait till this offseason, right now we have like 3 or 4 DH type guys, and I can't wait to see them unload Matsui and either Nady or Damon in order to free up some cash.
