« Odds And Ends: Holliday, Lugo, DeRosa | Main | Cubs, Cards & Mets Asked About Lugo »
On this date one year ago, the Phillies traded three minor leaguers to the A's for Joe Blanton. He would go on to make 13 starts for the Fightins, finishing 4-0 with a 4.20 ERA. With only two weeks remaining before this season's trade deadline, let's take a look at what is being written in the Blogosphere...

Mike Hampton's contract was worse. At least Zito is there to provide league average pitching instead of staying on the DL.
Plus at the time Hampton's contract was historic.

The fact that a Yankee fan is even talking about "needing" Halladay is disgusting and embarrassing.
Remember 2 years ago when every Yankee fan in the world thought Joba was going to be the greatest pitcher ever?
Now he's the # 4 spot behind the second or third best rotation in baseball (I still think the Angels have that title) behind Sabbathia, Burnett, and a somewhat revived Pettite and they're giving up on him?

Giants, Braves, Red Sox, Tigers, tons of other teams have better rotations than the Yankees and Angels. Not that theirs is bad.

i remember last year at this time me and most of the rest of the Phils fans were biatching and complaining we got Blanton instead of CC and Harden who had already been traded.
Sometimes the biggest deals aren't always the best ones.

Yankee fans need to wake up. There is no way Riccardi trades within the division . He would be run out of Toronto if he did that. Besides, they would want Hughes not Chamberlain, and Hughes is going nowhere. Stop dreaming.

agree 100%. The contracts are only about 6 million total away from eachother despite being 2001 versus 2007. Relative to the value of a dollar, Hampton signed for a higher amount. And Hampton has seen a huge increase in production the prior two years almost solely because of a H% and HR% drop - two things which were bound to go through the roof in Colorado. His controlable ability did not project well to the location he was headed, at all. Plus, he was a risk injury wise, where Zito is probably one of the healthiest projectable pitchers you can probably find because of his delivery and work ethic.
No comparison in my mind.

what about darren dreifort's contract? 5yr/55mill in 2001, wow. At least zito gives the giants 1 quality start every 4 outings. Dreifort never pitched

ThinkBlue you talk like Joba has 5 or 6 years in the league. Yankees don't need Doc, but what you don't understand is that a team like the Yanks will be mention when a player of this magnitude is available and Toronto wants it as well because it cold increase their return.

I have to go with Dreifort as well. Zito and Hampton were a result of teams overpaying for potential #1's. Both had quality years leading up to FA. Zito was a Cy Young winner and Hampton was a runner up. While both may have been busts (Zito is at least serviceable) they don't come close to Dreifort. Dreifort wasn't even a good starter, being a 5 at best. To give him 5 years at 55 million was stupid, the results that followed made it even worse.

Do you think that cleveland is holding out on dealing lee until after halladay is traded or not because he can really command alot of attention. The price has to be lower than for halladay because he isnt at the same level as Doc.

True Zito stinks I was glad when he went to the giants , but pavano's deal was pretty bad and what about pedro martinez deal that was bad too. I mean you look at that year. The mets and yankees were after pavano, jaret wright ( who is no where to be found) and pedro martinez so they are all kinda washed up except well pavano but i would not want him So worst deal Pedro Martinez simply because expectations were high
