| Billy Beane On Deadline, Needs, Geren »

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe has some rumors from around the league. Let's sift through them.
- The Dodgers, Brewers, and Phillies remain interested in Mark Mulder who is finishing his rehab and hopes to entertain offers in a week.
- Cafardo speculates if former Royals GM Allard Baird will deliver Mark Teahen, a former player of his, to the Red Sox. Baird is currently assistant to the GM in Boston.
- The Mets might be able to add about $5 to $6MM in payroll before the deadline.
- Brandon Wood would have to be a part of the package for Roy Halladay if the Angels were to make a serious push.
- There's a "good chance" Kenny Williams is looking into Halladay, says Cafardo. He wonders if Williams, who now has back-of-the-bullpen depth, would trade Bobby Jenks to shave payroll.
- The Red Sox are confident with the pieces they have, even
if obtaining Halladay might guarantee them
a championship. Regardless, the Jays "would likely not want to deal Halladay within the division," says Cafardo.
I wish Cafardo would just stick to the Red Sox...he always seems to put out articles with excellent insight on Boston and then throws out scraps about other teams that are nothing more than idle speculation.

Hmmm. Boston Globe, probably has primarily Boston readership and he only printing what he has also heard (or seen) from other sources with regards to other teams.
Maybe Rios and the rest of the Mets just don't like to play with a hangnail anyway?

Man I hope Omar uses that $5-6 million for more AAA filler!

A) Rios plays in Toronto
B) Halladay makes less than Peavy...KW all ready cleared enough payroll to presumably acquire Peavy. I doubt he has to move Jenks to clear Payroll.
C) Since Reyes has been a regular, he's played in 160, 153, 161, and 159 games. It's his first DL trip since 2004. He's a speed guy with a torn hamstring tendon, of course he's not going to rush back. All the evidence seems to support the exact opposite of Cafardo's conclusions.
D)Beltran has played 140 or more games every year since joining the Mets, despite having had 3 knee surgeries and 2 other surgeries in that time. He was playing on a bone bruise that could very easily have required micro-fracrure surgery if he kept playing on it. The fact that he played through his injury for 1 1/2 months before the Mets had to force him to go on the DL should say all that is needed about that.
You can criticize the Mets for alot about their play. They play very poor defense, and make a ton of baserunning mistakes. They've been hard to watch this season. I don't think you can say that the problems would be fixed by playing with "tough guys". It's a lousy observation from a guy who obviosly hasn't followed the Mets at all.

Nothing guarantees anyone a championship. Cafardo draws my ire.

An everyday player or a Cy Young winner. Hmm interesting. Halladay can pitch an entire ball game himself. Or Penny who throws 1000 pitches before the 5th inning.
Problem with this move is Toronto GM would want the farm.

I Think That The Royals Are Going To Be A Good Team Soon.
As For The Red Sox...Get Halladay. Give Up Clay Not Reddick!!!
I Would Like Seeing Teahen In Boston...But What Would It Take?

I was a little rough on Reyes (Rios by mistake) people still always forget that this primarily a Boston oriented paper.
Posted by: johns | July 12, 2009 at 01:10 PM
Jake Peavy's 09 Salary= 6 mil
Roy Halladay's 09 Salary= 10 mil
Why the hell would they want Wood as a center of a deal? I'd rather have someone who I know can be close to Roy Halladay's caliber, not just Adam Dunn at 3B(even though Adam's great).

That was the whole point...his reporting on the Sox is excellent, and usually pretty good concerning the AL east. His articles always seem to venture outside of the AL east however, and he always makes very questionable observations.

Why not trade Izturis/Aybar instead of wood? Valubility?

How do you know with any certainty that someone like Contreras wasn’t part of the deal to even out the 2009 cost? The Padres were contemplating the deal for future salary as much as salary this season, and if taking such a player meant they got more return, they almost certainly would have done it. Much like them agreeing to take Marquis from us.

The two PTBNL by all reports I read were Broadway and Marquez. Williams also said that they could afford to take on Peavy's entire contract. Nothing was stated as being certain, and the words "I doubt" don't imply a statement of fact either. By all reports though, SD was not taking on any major salary in that deal, and KW made it clear that adding payroll was not an issue.

I'd rather see the Phils take on a broken Mark Mulder than a broken Pedro Martinez

@ brendon latucca
I think the Sox could give up Jon Van Every/Chris Carter with Julio Lugo for Teahen. Everyone wins: Royals get some youth and the Red Sox lose Lugo.

By the way to get Halladay it will take Beckham. Peavy is no where near the caliber of Halladay, and the Jays won't trade him in the AL unless they're overwhelmed, and I only think Texas can do that.
Posted by: baseball52 | July 12, 2009 at 03:30 PM
Brandon Wood and what else? Thats the question.
The Angels dont have enough to get a deal done with the Jays for Halladay, not even close.

Raiderbosox,
Vanevery has been removed from the 40 man roster already and I *think* DFA'd already, Carter is not a real prospect anymore since he has really failed to improve at AA the last couple of years and is pretty bad with the glove at both 1B and the corner OF positions and Lugo is just plain awful in the field and is a salary dump type player there is pretty much no way the Sox can move, short of eating the entire contract and then, only giving him away for the most horrible of ML players.
Not trying to rag on you, just that KC is going to want a really good prospect (probably pitching) for Mark Teahen who can play several positions and hit for power. KC realizes they have a pretty good (and young) commodity in him.

Actually I'd take a broke-down Pedro than a broke-down Mulder
Posted by: Braves for NL East!! | July 12, 2009 at 04:06 PM
If rumors are true and I couldn't see why not the brewers are showing interest in both Pedro and Mulder.
With Mulder who has stated that he would like to return to a team in the NL Central could make a great fit for the only team that is left that shows interest in him is Milwaukee.
Idk what the Brewers were thinking in pursuit of Pedro, the man has no motive in helping the team win. He just wants his money and a place to retire again.
Mulder who actually shows a lot of progress on his rehab is anxious on stepping back out on the mound.
Milwaukee is struggling to find a back end in their rotation, in efforts.....
Mulder signs 2 years 7 mill.
Posted by: sabathgod | July 12, 2009 at 05:10 PM
If Milwaukee signs Mulder to a 2/7 contract, Doug Melvin should be fired ASAP! You don't just randomly hand out money to a player(yes I've heard of the Yankees). Not to mention Mulder hasn't thrown in years.
Posted by: Braves for NL East!! | July 12, 2009 at 05:50 PM
I wouldn't give up on Wood just yet. He had a homer yesterday and an RBI today If he doesn't make an impact in the next week and a half he'd probably be dealt for a Halladay or a Haren. As an Angels fan I'd like to get Haren because Haren has great command as well as Halladay but it just seems like Haren's a better pitcher in his own, creative way and maybe the Dbacks could throw in Qualls as well if the Angels throw up an inticing offer.

What else do the Brewers have to lose? They're going to have to match a deal with other teams in the league. Most likely the Crew won't make the big move before the deadline closes in, so Mulder is a great pick-up. Even if it doesn't pan out, it's a good attempt for some possible pitching.

I can see Teahen going to the White Sox. After all KW loves making deals with KC. Unfortunately, pretty much none have worked out. McDougal, Gobble, etc. I rest my case. But Teahen could be good in the lineup & move Beckham to his natural position at SS. Alexei goes back to 2nd where he did well last season. Come on Teahen. You'll like the South Side.
Posted by: WhiteSox4Life | July 15, 2009 at 04:21 PM
Trading Beckham for a washed up Hallady is like the White Sox trading for Alfonso Soriano. W.S. could move Jenks, Denks, and Dye. You could put it on the board.
