I hear ya, Neyer. I came back after leaving the top of the first and to my horror finding the 7 underneath BB instead of SO. I do like Ollie when he's on but I think he's mentally broke.

4 Phils in the top 50, NICE!!
ALright Jays you can have two of them (preferably Drabek and Brown) and then a couple other pieces (Savery, Donald, Marson) for Halladay.
Deal??

Tillman and Matusz as the second and third best pitching prospects in baseball makes me very happy.

Here are my surprises from that new Top 25:
Justin Smoak at #4 seems awfully high for someone who is sure to play a non-premium defensive position.
Freddie Freeman coming in at #11 is far higher than I ever would have imagined. An .841 OPS at high A is good for a 19 year old, for sure, but over Jarrod Parker, Neftali Feliz and Alcides Escobar?
And I really never thought that Jason Castro would come in at 19, or that Taylor would come in at 23.
A lot of these guys have been called up recently, so it'll be interesting to see how each of them reacts to playing against increasingly better competition.

what bad contracts are out there that the mets could swap Perez's for? How about Rios? Pierre?
Posted by: wallybackman | July 09, 2009 at 12:31 PM
The mets would make that deal for rios asap
Posted by: beastOftheEast | July 09, 2009 at 12:40 PM
Rios is actually a good baseball player.
Rios has had some bad luck this season with his hitting, but he's a great defensive right fielder, and he's been exceptional in the past couple years.
Rios may never reach the superstar status that some thought was possible, but he's still a very good right fielder, and the Blue Jays would laugh at any Perez offer.

ha where is 661dodgerblue.....We were discussing yesterday how I thought Montero was the better catching prospect over Posey. Funny the new list came out and Montero is now 3 spots above Posey at #3....makes me look good.
Hmmmm who would you rather have the #3 overall ranked prospect in baseball or the #6? Who cares any team would be happy as hell for either. Just personal opinion at this point.

jesus montero is not a better catching prospecy then posey. Not at all. He is a better offensive prospect with a higher offensive ceiling, but the fact that he won't be a major league catcher sort of keeps him underneath Posey in terms of catching prospects. Montero is rated where he is because of his bat, and nothing else.

4 Phillies in the Top 50.
Hmm...Drabek, Taylor, Donald & maybe 1 more? Is that reasonable?

replace Taylor with Brown (higher in the top 25) and as long as that one more isn't Knapp then we're fine.

Congrats to Montero for cracking the top 5. I'm a little curious as to why Austin Jackson couldn't crack the top 25? Great defensive CF'ers w/ speed, at age 22 who's hitting .316/.383 in his first full year @ AAA. Maybe it's his lack of power (only 4 hrs this year) and his 77 strikeouts?

1.Heyward
11.Freeman
What we lack in quantity, we make up for in quality.

"Maybe it's his lack of power (only 4 hrs this year) and his 77 strikeouts?"
Lack of plate discipline like that will do it every time YFS78. If his strikeout totals are that high in 1/2 season of AAA, look for him to repeat AAA again.
Some teams were without prospects in the top 50 even so take the top 5. Bucholz does not qualify anymore and pretty sure why he is not on the list and Tazawa at AA not even on the top 50, yet is pitching in the Futures game this Friday and has been brilliant at AA in his 1st pro season.

nrmax88 what i was saying the other day is that they are both top catching prospects. Montero has made get strides behind the plate and is still young enough to become a good defensive catcher. He does have a rocket for an arm.
But the point I was trying to make is that it doesn't matter where they ranked, they both have high ceilings and baseball america rankings don't mean squat until they perform at the MLB level.

scribbletone,
People get way to caught up like things with OPS in the minors, without really looking at the context of those numbers. Sure, Freeman's .840 OPS might not seem that impressive, but its the 7th best in the Carolina League among qualifying players. He's also 6th in AVG and 3rd in OBP, all at just 19 years old. The contact ability looks very good, he's improved his ability to take walks, he's apparently quite good in the field, and the scouting reports and 6'5" 220 lb frame at just 19 point to him developing more power as he progresses. 11 does seem a bit on the high side, but I think its perfectly justifiable given what he's done the past year and a half.
As for Feliz, I'm assuming he's getting knocked because he hasn't improved at all on his previous weaknesses. His lack of command was a big problem as a starter, and despite the huge fastball his lack of secondary pitches kept his K rate below 9. Now that he's been moved to the bullpen for the time being, there will be little need (or chance for that matter) for him to further refine those pitches. If he doesn't, he might not make it as a SP, and RP just don't get ranked that highly.

johns,
plenty of questions abound in the futures game choices. Michael Taylor is better right now than any other OF on the USA roster and the Phils sent Yohan Flande (solid in High A and weak so far in AA) there. I'd rather see Knapp or Taylor there, IMO along with Drabek. I bet JP will be watching that game closely.

One freakin Cub, and he is number 49? :(
Hendry, please do us a favor and just quit now! You have not addressed the system at all while you buried the ML team in horrible contracts. You did get us a couple playoff berths, but you did it the easy way, and the worst way possible - purchased teams with no depth at all.
Our sale is still unresolved, and the earliest they would make front office decisions would probably be next season, or possibly even the year after. Just please, do us all a favor and throw in the towel before then! We need someone who will put the best interest of the club first, not someone throwing endless cash at players hoping to buy the central so they somehow look like they are doing a good job!
Please Hendry, you will save more face bowing out now!

I wonder if the guy trolling the Halladay post the other day saying Heyward was nothing special (iknowalilsomethingaboutsomething i believe) is going to be making an appearance in this thread. Its great to see Heyward getting the love he deserves. I've never been more sure of a 19 year old that has barely even played in AA. If keeps this up for the rest of the minor league season I think he might even get a look in September this year.

Posey will be a GG caliber catcher in the bigs, Montero will not. I also said Montero was a elite hitter, I never said he was a bad prospect.
I woke up too reading that comment.

wow, expected a little more love for Martin Perez...I guess dominating the South Atlantic League as the youngest player doesnt get you very high
Posted by: JH32 | July 09, 2009 at 03:21 PM
nixa, HELL YEAH. Freeman is just 19 too. Both of those young men will be very helpful pretty soon. I like to compare Heyward to B.J Upton. Both are speedy, good with the leather and they've both got pop. I know i'm gonna catch hell for sayin that, but I DON'T CARE! I also like the comp to Chipper, run producers and SUPER fan favs.

Yeah, I'll take 1 in the top 5 and two in the top 50. I wonder if any of Austin Romine, Zack McAllister, Manuel Banuelos, Hecor Noesi, Melky Mesa or Mark Melancon will crack the top 100?

Hahaha...thinking the same thing about Banuelos. He's about 1 month older than Perez but posted better numbers in the SAL (14 starts, 7-3, 2.20 era, 73 IP, 66 ko vs 16 bb, 2 hrs allowed and a 1.00 whip. But it's single A so both could easily flame out right? But they are both 18 and it should be interesting to watch them develop.
On another note, what a bad year for Betances and Brackman. Neither can find the plate this year. Seems like their freakis 6'8 and 6'10 height might take them a couple of more years to get it together.

I dont see Jackson starting next year. Hes gonna get killed in the ML. 77 strikeouts for a guy with no power is ridiculous. Gardner has done a really good job this year. He brings a whole new way of playing to the Yankees with his speed. They havent had someone like him for a while.
Posted by: yankfan1 | July 09, 2009 at 05:02 PM
If he finished the year with a line around .315/.370 vs AAA pitching then I'm not sure how they could not bring him up. I think he has a better chance learning with professional hitters like Jeter, Swisher, etc than watching other AAA guys. We'll see...

If i were Theo Epstein i would pick up Bj Ryan in a second . Sure he had a bad start it happens to alot of pitchers. Instead of Takashi saito who sucks release him and sign Ryan . He can be a set up man for Papelbon
