The Orioles may be close to offering Miguel Angel Sano a deal that could surpass the $2.4MM they awarded top pick Matt Hobgood this year, according to Steve Melewski of MASN.com. ESPN.com's Jorge Arangure Jr. said Monday that the Orioles were not going to award Sano more than Hobgood or 2008 draftee Brian Matusz, who received $3.2MM. Now, Melewski says the O's could offer Sano more than $2.4MM, as they value him more than a late first rounder.

sweet. hopefully the o's can get this done relatively cheaply and continue to build that farm system

The Twins offered around $3MM... so if the O's only come up with $2.4MM-$3MM, we should still have a shot at it.
I expect the Pirates to outbid everyone though... oh well, here's hoping.

This is good for the Pirates they know what figue they have to outbid to get him in camp. Hopefully Neal has this kid signed by this time next week. 3.5-4.0 should do it.
Posted by: BucSox | July 08, 2009 at 02:38 PM
I expect the Pirates would be willing to go as high as 4.5.
Posted by: BucSox | July 08, 2009 at 02:39 PM
I'd imagine $3.5MM would indeed get it done... I'll keep holding onto my hope that Arangure is wrong and the Twins are still in the mix for Sano.

I know this Sano kid is a Legit prospect, but is he a phoenom tat we'll see in the bigs soon? Maybe like Andruw Jones was at 18?

i would be very surprised if the pirates don't snag him, considering the way they approached the draft this year.

Hopefully, AM gets this done. The O's have pitching prospects out the wazoo, but there's desperately in need of position players.
*crosses fingers*

Should be "they're." That's what I get for not previewing my post. :P

This goes to show u how much a random ESPN writer knows about a team he probably never covers. He probably doesn't have any actual contacts from inside the organization or the city's local reporters. A few days ago Jorge Arangure Jr. was adamant about how much they valued Sano, how much they were going to offer, and related him to their current top picks. It turns out he was wrong on all accounts.

If the Os sign him, it's like they had 2 1st rounders this season, one pitcher and one hitter. That system is stacked up and down.

This is the O's new building block. Weve advanced Matt Weiters, Brian Matzus is going to be in Triple A by the end of the year, and this kid would be a great addition. We can definitely outspend the Pirates and Twins. And honestly, who would ever want to be a part of the Pirates farm system until they get new management? This is the new great hope! GO ANDY!If this works out hes brought in our CF, LF, SS,C, locked up our 2B and RF, and between 2-4 big time SP. He just needs to work corner infield now!

oh and an all star closer. and great set up man who could become a starter or closer in Jim Johnson. Man if Jay Gibbons hadnt been on roids...

Now there's something I've NEVER read before.

Oh, and by the way Beckham, we DO have new management as of two years ago. The reign of Littlefield still haunts this board I see.
Posted by: bucs_lose_again | July 08, 2009 at 04:06 PM
I'm sayin hes a Bucco for 3.3M.
Posted by: BuccoNation | July 08, 2009 at 04:38 PM
Beckham, get your facts right. Until then...put a sock in it bruh, LOL.

A few things 1st their farm system is good but Boston's and Tampa's is still better
2nd While the O's have more money I am still confident the Pirates get this guy his family and Gayo have a close relationship. We have saved a lot of money in the draft this year (Which by the way Tony Sanchez is tearing it up in the minors right now). As I have stated before I think the Pirates will go as high as 4.5MM and I don't think the O's and surely not the Twins will even go that high.
Posted by: BucSox | July 08, 2009 at 05:04 PM
One other thing I neglected to mention is while the Pirates have had 16 straight losing seasons the O's have had 11 in a row themselves so I reallly don't see them or their fans in any kind of position to say anything negative about another team's front office.

You know it's funny, while the Pirates are the epitomy of losing the last decade and a half, the Orioles haven't exactly been blazing new trails and establishing themselves as a winning organization. Even though this has been covered ad nauseum, the Pirates do have new management in place and things haven't looked better since the days of Bonds and Bonilla. This will be one more kid to add to an impressive cast of prospects that Dave Littlefield could only dream of.
Before you bash another organization, you should move out of your glass house.

Sox farm isn't better than the Os. That may have been true 1-2 years ago but they've promoted a ton and haven't really filled the void. A lot of the talent is lower levels now. They have Bowden but the Os have 3-4 elite guys, 2 of which would rank higher than Bowden on BA's Top 50 list. The Sox have promoted a bunch of their talent. The Os are maybe 12-14 deep in quality prospects. Sox are maybe 4-5. Again much of that has to do with promotions, but, the Os have promoted quite a bit now too, which includes Wieters, MILB's #1 prospect.

Please God...let the O's sign him! I'm not entirely objective on the subject, but I genuinely think the kid's coming to Baltimore. Like the Pirates, we were conspicuously cheap in this year's draft (despite having spent significant $$$ in recent years), we've got a bigger market/budget than the Bucs, and I...sense it. OK, that last one is meaningless, but it's just a hunch.
Sano is no sure thing, but he's an excellent prospect and serves a second important function: jump starting our international scouting/development program (promised by Andy Mac when he came aboard and thus far...absent). Furthermore, he's a shortstop; a glaring hole from the top of the organization down to the dregs. Add Sano and Givens and I'd say we're actually looking fairly strong up the middle (as far as prospects go).
As for the Red Sox... They've got a very good system, but I think Baltimore's would have to be considered superior...for the moment. Most of our top guys are in the upper minors and there's some depth. With the underwhelming performance of Lars Anderson this year and Boston's best prospect being Casey Kelly- an A-ball guy- I'd rank the O's ahead of the Sox. That said, I'm a fan and can't claim complete objectivity. I read a chat somewhere recently, however, in which someone asked who the moderator would take between Buchholtz, Masterson, and Bowden and Tillman, Matusz, and Arrieta. The moderator didn't hesitate to take the Orioles' trio. Just one example.

My wish for the O's
1. Sign Sano
2. Sign Chapman
3. Trade Sherrill + for Brandon Wood
4. Trade Izturis and Huff for prospects.
5. See what we can get for Baez
'nuff said.

don't even bother responding to jackasses like that. it'll just encourage them.

Yes, I'm a Baltimore fan but I don't endorse a word of that stuff. Don't even bother responding. He's just mad that the library computer lab is going to close in an hour.
