« Roy Halladay Not Traded | Main | Deadline Roundup: Cabrera, Astros, Nats »
6:09pm: Blair also hears that the Jays will send about $4MM to the Reds.
4:50pm: Richard Griffin of the Toronto Star reports that the Jays will pay all of Rolen's 2009 salary, nearly $4MM. Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi report that an undisclosed amount of cash is changing hands.
4:26pm: The Jays will pay some of the $4MM Rolen makes between now and the end of the season, according to Jeff Blair of the Globe and Mail.
4:25pm: MLB.com's Jordan Bastian reports that Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi says Rolen asked to be traded for "personal reasons."
3:14pm: Rolen approved the deal, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post (on Twitter). ESPN's Keith Law says Yonder Alonso is not in the deal. Instead, it'll be Encarnacion, Josh Roenicke, and Zach Stewart heading to Toronto according to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
2:56pm: FOX Sports says the Blue Jays will get Edwin Encarnacion and a minor leaguer. Rolen is expected to approve the deal. It's a massive upgrade for the Reds defensively.
2:40pm: The Reds acquired third baseman Scott Rolen, according to SI's Jon Heyman (via Twitter). The next step is Rolen approving the trade. He's owed $4MM this year and another $11MM in 2010. The slick-gloved 34 year-old has bounced back to hit .320/.370/.476 in 373 plate appearances this year.

hmmm, kind of a silly move for the reds when you think about it
Posted by: 04Forever | July 31, 2009 at 02:41 PM
nice pickup. even tho they have no shot in the central...
Posted by: han-ram3 | July 31, 2009 at 02:41 PM
What the hell? For who?
Posted by: melonis rex | July 31, 2009 at 02:42 PM
someone get tim a cool beverage, there's smoke coming from his fingers.
Posted by: dboy79 | July 31, 2009 at 02:42 PM
His contract runs through next season. The team has talent, but a couple injuries this year derailed it. I think it was a great move, thinking for next year. Was EE involved?
Posted by: soxfan93 | July 31, 2009 at 02:43 PM
sweet and dude there is still lots of season left
Posted by: NastiNati | July 31, 2009 at 02:43 PM
If EE is part of the deal .. its an improvement for the present & next season ... after that ... a couple of our minor leaguers should be ready for the majors
Posted by: Gunner65 | July 31, 2009 at 02:43 PM
hopefully in is gone
Posted by: The Big Red Machine | July 31, 2009 at 02:43 PM
JP did say Rolen was going no where unless Halladay was traded....
Posted by: UGotRPK3113 | July 31, 2009 at 02:43 PM
edwin
Posted by: The Big Red Machine | July 31, 2009 at 02:43 PM
Hope the Jays keep Halladay to build around ... well, whoever they have that can play 3rd.
Now, could this be a precursor for a Halladay deal that would send Wood to Toronto to play 3rd?
Posted by: bjsguess | July 31, 2009 at 02:43 PM
Is this the 2nd time Jocketty has traded for Rolen?
Posted by: MPM | July 31, 2009 at 02:44 PM
My thought was "What the hell for?" Why throw away prospects, even fringe ones, for a aging 3rd baseball that plays excellent defense if you're not in the hunt for the playoffs?
Posted by: Cronus | July 31, 2009 at 02:44 PM
whhhyyyy!??
If you're trading Rolen & keeping Roy - how does that makes sense if you plan on 'competing' next year?
Posted by: deeselig | July 31, 2009 at 02:44 PM
this would be a colossally stupid deal. why would the reds give up ANYTHING for him? with or without rolen, they are totally inferior to the cards, cubs, and probably the astros too.
this just seems worthless, especially if they gave up anyone of any value at all.
Posted by: meph | July 31, 2009 at 02:44 PM
A. I hope its not Alonso, Fraizer or Stubbs for ROlen
B. I hope they pick up some sort of portion of his salary.
C. What the heck is this trade about? Wild Card this year? Weve stunk...cant pitch or field anymore. Is this a move for next eyar as well? Then its not so bad, very solid fielder with a decent bat, which we need.
D. I really hope this move is followed with the addition of a some sort of outfielder or pitcher...or else it was a huge waste because this team lacks two solid outfielder, with an inconsistent shortstop..and pitching on the fritz...
Posted by: GmblngPtchr20 | July 31, 2009 at 02:44 PM
please tell me we dumped arroyo in this deal. Probably not since they still have halladay.
Posted by: RedsAlwaysLetMeDown | July 31, 2009 at 02:44 PM
Hmm, weird...
He's a good player but expensive as hell and he's old and creaky. Maybe next season will finally be the year for the Reds, I've been thinking that the past two now.
If they can dump Arroyo on someone, this deal would make more sense. I didn't know they were able to take on this much payroll.
Posted by: bigpat | July 31, 2009 at 02:44 PM
If it is any more than Harang or EE I am going to be disappointed. Otherwise, good pickup.
Posted by: Swayne5 | July 31, 2009 at 02:45 PM
It's time for an intervention: has Walt Jocketty had a stroke? Or is it Alzheimer's? The man is living in the past ...
Posted by: Monroe Says | July 31, 2009 at 02:45 PM
This does seem like a peculiar move if the intention is to keep Roy Halladay and go for at least the wild card in 2010.
Posted by: SM Jenkins | July 31, 2009 at 02:45 PM
Edwin better come back
Posted by: Jays4Life | July 31, 2009 at 02:45 PM
Building for next year Reds fans, relax, we just got a premier defensive 3b. No more nightmares with Edwin. Think about it, Game 5 NLDS 2-1 game, Volquez gem, top of the 9th, EE tossing a flailing duck into the 3rd row....
Posted by: jbibbali | July 31, 2009 at 02:46 PM
yes frickin get Edwin out of cincy
Posted by: RedsFan2013 | July 31, 2009 at 02:46 PM
Could this possibly be part of a three team trade that was rumored earlier?
Posted by: clar5 | July 31, 2009 at 02:47 PM
Didn't J.P. say he wouldn't trade Rolen if Halladay was staying? This is a bit odd.
Posted by: Pablano | July 31, 2009 at 02:47 PM
I'm hoping for EE in LF...send them prospects...
Posted by: jbibbali | July 31, 2009 at 02:47 PM
Maybe they move EE to LF
Posted by: MikeClarke | July 31, 2009 at 02:47 PM
Didn't J.P. say he wouldn't trade Rolen if Halladay was staying? This is a bit odd.
Posted by: Pablano | July 31, 2009 at 02:47 PM
Yeah - he was pretty strong about this opinion too. I have a feeling Halladay is packing his bags as we speak.
Posted by: UGotRPK3113 | July 31, 2009 at 02:48 PM
If it is for Encarnacion it is a terrible deal for Toronto.
If they got more...well, we'll see.
Posted by: rpriske | July 31, 2009 at 02:49 PM
Wow the Reds are taking more water in on a sinking ship. Terrible move!
Posted by: deemac1125 | July 31, 2009 at 02:49 PM
Halladay will go to someone
Posted by: Dodgerfaninspokane | July 31, 2009 at 02:50 PM
Can Encarnacion play any other positions?
Posted by: RyMac | July 31, 2009 at 02:50 PM
Ughh the last thing we need is an expensive, injury prone, older, bad clubhouse guy. If they gave up anything of value (that includes EE) I'm not a fan
Posted by: UncleWeez | July 31, 2009 at 02:50 PM
rolen rules. blue jay fans are very sad to see him go.
Posted by: plaing | July 31, 2009 at 02:51 PM
"Can Encarnacion play any other positions?"
He should be playing in the OF or 1B.
Posted by: melonis rex | July 31, 2009 at 02:52 PM
"If it is for Encarnacion it is a terrible deal for Toronto.
If they got more...well, we'll see.
Posted by: rpriske "
Depends on how much cash the Jays agreed to pay towards Rolens contract ... the more they are willing to pay, the better the return would be ... if they are paying nothing ... then EE is about the best you should expect ... anything else would be a good deal
Posted by: Gunner65 | July 31, 2009 at 02:53 PM
The 'bad clubhouse guy' thing seems to be a myth.
I think his troubles with LaRussa and Bowa were because he didn't put up with their crap.
As long as he doesn't go to a team with a crotchety old manager...
:)
Posted by: rpriske | July 31, 2009 at 02:53 PM
Do the Reds actually think they are still in the race?
Posted by: ToddSm66 | July 31, 2009 at 02:53 PM

Can he play 2nd?
Posted by: RyMac | July 31, 2009 at 02:55 PM
Depends who it's for, better be for something good

Posted by: bogeygolfer | July 31, 2009 at 02:55 PM
I think this was a move made for 2010. Just a matter of what they gave up for him.
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | July 31, 2009 at 02:56 PM
Jays players loved having Scott around. Great character guy. Apparently he's one of the only guys who gets Roy to bust a gut.
Posted by: deeselig | July 31, 2009 at 02:56 PM
Yonder Alonso and Edwin Encarnacion for Scott Rolen - Fox Sports.
Posted by: Pablano | July 31, 2009 at 02:58 PM
I think this was a move made for 2010. Just a matter of what they gave up for him.
absolutely right here. this move by the blue jays saved them 11 million next year.
Posted by: derman1984 | July 31, 2009 at 02:58 PM
Steal for the Jays.
Who's the minor leaguer?
Posted by: melonis rex | July 31, 2009 at 02:58 PM
Why couldn't the Braves have gone after Rolen? He is better and cheaper than LaRoche.
Posted by: BravesRed | July 31, 2009 at 02:58 PM
Alonso alone would have been worth it.
Holy crap.
Posted by: rpriske | July 31, 2009 at 02:59 PM
"Yonder Alonso and Edwin Encarnacion for Scott Rolen - Fox Sports."
Where's the mob of Reds fans. I'll supply the pitchforks.
Posted by: melonis rex | July 31, 2009 at 02:59 PM
nice move jays
REDS ARE STUPID THEY GAVE UP Y. ALONSO IDIOTS
Posted by: MARLINSmanny | July 31, 2009 at 03:00 PM
Never mind, scratch the cheaper part off.
Posted by: BravesRed | July 31, 2009 at 03:00 PM
"Yonder Alonso and Edwin Encarnacion for Scott Rolen - Fox Sports.
Posted by: Pablano"
If that is true, a huge steal for the Jays ... our top prospect for a season & a half of Rolen is pure thievery & Jockety should fired on the spot for even considering this deal much less making it.
Posted by: Gunner65 | July 31, 2009 at 03:01 PM
For real...Alonso too?
Posted by: Swayne5 | July 31, 2009 at 03:01 PM
"The deal awaits only Rolen's approval, which he is expected to give; he has a full no-trade clause. In return, the Jays will acquire third baseman Edwin Encarnacion and 2008 first-round pick Yonder Alonso, an infielder.' - fox sports
Posted by: RedsAlwaysLetMeDown | July 31, 2009 at 03:01 PM
Oh god, I bet that the alonso part is a typo, i'm not getting my hopes up, my day has been awful.
Posted by: The_Bunk | July 31, 2009 at 03:01 PM
Encarnacion is a huge downgrade. If the minor leaguer is just an add in, this is a horrible deal through and through.
Posted by: Guitar Hero | July 31, 2009 at 03:02 PM
why walt why?
Posted by: RedsAlwaysLetMeDown | July 31, 2009 at 03:02 PM
Wow... Alonso was probably worth more then Rolen was and they give him and EE for him... Those pitchforks might be useful if Alonso was really part of the deal...
Posted by: Cronus | July 31, 2009 at 03:03 PM
I highly doubt it's Alonso. That seems like way too much unless the Jays are paying all of Rolen's salary.

ALONSO YONDER CANNOT BE TRADED! HE SIGNED LAST AUGUST! YOU HAVE TO BE SIGNED THROUGH 1 YEAR TO BE TRADED AND IM SURE IT IS NOT A PTBNL
Posted by: RedsFan2013 | July 31, 2009 at 03:04 PM
Ed Price says the Alonso part is incorrect.
http://twitter.com/ed_price/status/3057155032
Posted by: BravesRed | July 31, 2009 at 03:04 PM
woah, please say not Alonso. Even if he's never going to be good, you're supposed to trade guys like this for 3 months of CC or something. SHITE!!
Posted by: jbibbali | July 31, 2009 at 03:04 PM
According to Cot's Contracts, Rolen is owed $11 million plus a $4 million bonus next year. That's a lot of scratch.
I don't think he's a bad clubhouse guy. As long as Dusty kisses his precious behind, he'll play nice.
Posted by: GoPhils | July 31, 2009 at 03:04 PM
This is a HUGE steal for the Jays
Alonso could play soon. Maybe an Overbay trade is coming???
Posted by: SneakyMann | July 31, 2009 at 03:04 PM
no way even Walt is that stupid
Posted by: Monroe Says | July 31, 2009 at 03:04 PM
well at least I didn't get my hopes up, can't wait until this day is over.
Posted by: The_Bunk | July 31, 2009 at 03:05 PM
Even if it was Alonso, he'd have to be a PTBNL as he can't be traded yet.
Posted by: Slasher | July 31, 2009 at 03:05 PM
"Encarnacion is a huge downgrade. If the minor leaguer is just an add in, this is a horrible deal through and through."
If 'the minor leaguer' is Alonso as reported, it could be the best deal Ricciardi has ever made. (If it ISN'T Alonso, well, it depends...because yes, EE is a big downgrade.)
Posted by: rpriske | July 31, 2009 at 03:05 PM
If they got Alonso, JP may have kept his job for the next few years.
Also hearing the Angels may be getting Halladay, not sure if they made it in time. Exciting stuff!!!
Posted by: bigpat | July 31, 2009 at 03:06 PM
On WFAN, there saying Halladay might have been dealt to Anaheim.
Posted by: Pablano | July 31, 2009 at 03:07 PM
wow coulda gotten more for alonso if he's truly blocked by Votto no!??!? Rolen, eeeg great deal for jays!
Posted by: tvators | July 31, 2009 at 03:07 PM
Why couldn't the Braves have gone after Rolen? He is better and cheaper than LaRoche.
Posted by: BravesRed | July 31, 2009 at 02:58 PM
Cheaper? How do you figure?
Posted by: GoPhils | July 31, 2009 at 03:08 PM
rolen traded but not halladay? ..jp is on crack.
Posted by: crc | July 31, 2009 at 03:08 PM
It doesn't matter if Alonso's blocked, he's still an elite power prospect and he still should net a haul if traded.
Posted by: melonis rex | July 31, 2009 at 03:09 PM
I'm sure this was a move for next year as I can't see us jumping back into the race. It's not for Alonso, that would be stupid. But to get Rolen regardless of how much he is owed and get rid of the non-clutch hitting, non throwing Encarnacion is a great move. I doubt it's 10 games worth, but we're headed in the right direction....go REDS....in 2010!!!!!
Posted by: brucealmighty | July 31, 2009 at 03:10 PM
If halladay is in LAA, Yonder is in TOR, BRANDON WOOD BETTER BE IN CIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: jbibbali | July 31, 2009 at 03:10 PM
EE is pretty bad. His current value on Fangraphs is NEGATIVE $0.7m. His fielding is a huge disappointment. There's nowhere to play in the Jays outfield/DH and his bat just isn't good enough to occupy one of those spots.
The only good thing is that he costs next to nothing.
Posted by: bjsguess | July 31, 2009 at 03:10 PM
ESPN says its a done deal. Roy Halladay is an Angel.
Posted by: Pablano | July 31, 2009 at 03:10 PM
While I'm not wild about giving up Alonso, Rolen is a huge upgrade at 3B. The drop in E5's alone will make a world of difference. Plus Rolen's batting .320.
Posted by: SadRedsFan | July 31, 2009 at 03:11 PM
"rolen traded but not halladay? ..jp is on crack."
Yet another post that shows that JP can't win with some people no matter what he does.
If this deal is as reported it is a STEAL for the Jays.
I would like more info on the Halladay to Angels rumour though.
Posted by: rpriske | July 31, 2009 at 03:11 PM
Why would Alonso be a part of this deal?? If this is in fact true this is bull#@#(
Posted by: amurn44 | July 31, 2009 at 03:11 PM
Doesn't look like Alonso is part of the deal.
Posted by: Slasher | July 31, 2009 at 03:13 PM

Posted by: Slasher | July 31, 2009 at 03:16 PM
This idea that Alonso is part of the deal is silly. It's not happening. The Jays were lucky to get EE. That alone was a coup: Rolen is due to make 11 million next year and is an injury waiting to happen. His trade value is/was minimal.

Posted by: cincy_11 | July 31, 2009 at 03:17 PM
Alonso not being part of the deal makes sense. Saying the Jays are 'lucky' to get Encarnacion is just stupid.
Whether the deal is decent depends on WHO that minor leaguer is.
And WHERE is the Angels report?
Posted by: rpriske | July 31, 2009 at 03:18 PM
That says the deal is for Edwin Encarnacion, Josh Roenicke and Zach Stewart.
Also has contents of hairston yankee trade
Posted by: cincy_11 | July 31, 2009 at 03:18 PM
Pablano - link? Don't see that anywhere on ESPN.

Zach Stewart and Josh Roenicke included in deal with EdE for Rolen.
Posted by: Slasher | July 31, 2009 at 03:19 PM
Josh Roenicke and Zach Stewart and Encarnation? That's still "pitchfork mob to Walt's office" stupid.
Posted by: melonis rex | July 31, 2009 at 03:19 PM
Zach Stewart is a big loss, but not too concerned about Roenicke.
Posted by: Slasher | July 31, 2009 at 03:20 PM
Damn... Reds, they gave up 2 pretty good pitchers. I still hate this trade even with Alonso staying. Roenicke and Stewart are solid. (Especially Stewart)
Posted by: amurn44 | July 31, 2009 at 03:21 PM
this just got worse. At least Alonso showed signs of sucking. zach stewart is the man. 12 innings 16 k's with a 0.7 era. good thing we still got rip van weathers and arthur rhodes flintstone anchoring our bullpen.
Posted by: RedsAlwaysLetMeDown | July 31, 2009 at 03:21 PM
Okay...still a decent deal for Toronto... just not stupidly awesome.
Two solid relievers and someone to stop Bautista from being the thirdbaseman.
Posted by: rpriske | July 31, 2009 at 03:23 PM
somebody said richard weems for hairston
Posted by: oxfrat1665 | July 31, 2009 at 03:23 PM
Not familiar with Toronto...is Edwin gonna be playing 3B or will he swap spots or is he gonna ride pine?
Posted by: reds2010 | July 31, 2009 at 03:28 PM
