Classic KW. Doesn't tell anyone what he is thinking. I have good faith in him as he is already 3 for 3 in the off season already. Picking up the options on Thorton and Garcia (even thou they were no-brainers) and yesterday he waiver-claimed Alejandro De Aza. Low risk, high reward. Cant hate on that.

How is De Aza figured into any analysis around how well a GM is doing in the offseason?

Well it looks like he could fill the 4th OF spot since Wise left. This dude is pretty much Wise. And if not, he is only 25. Anything can happen. Low risk, high reward. He sucks he sucks, but if he ends up doing good at anything the move pickup worked.
Plus the off season didnt even start yet, but 3 moves i agree with were made so 3/3

I can see why you would have blind faith in the guy.
Since 2006 the Sox have averaged a payroll in the $105-$110m range. In that same time frame the Sox have had seasons that consisted of:
2009 - 79-83
2008 - 89-74
2007 - 72-90
2006 - 90-72
All while playing in a division that is pretty weak of late. I don't know - that big of a payroll, in the AL Central, with a 500 record over the past 4 years is hardly inspiring. The farm system is just so/so. I guess I'm struggling to see the genius that is KW.

I hope the Reds can re-sign Ramon Hernandez so long as his knee is fully healed.

I'd love to have Ramon back. He gets the clutch hits and can call a good game.

Good move if the Reds re-sign Hernandez. Im not completely sold on Hanigan being the starter behind the dish. Ramon is good with the bat and the glove plus he's clutch and Hanigan isn't.
What the Reds need mostly on offense are clutch RBIs. They weren't very good with runners in scoring position and not having Ramon due to injury had a negative effect on that. Besides shortstop, I like their lineup if Hernandez is the starter in 2010.

$50K is tip money. That represents .3% of his total salary. For a regular Joe making $60K per year, that would be equal to $200.

KW needs to pursue Abreu and draw the line at $12M/2yr. Over 100RBI the past 7 season along with a career OBP over .400, oh and he score close to 100 runs/yr. His offense will more than make up for his slightly below avg defense. Soscia has repeatly given credit to Abreu for the teams more patient and successful approach this season, setting the tone at the top of the order. No more sluggers who cant shorten their swing with 2 strikes. Thx for the memories Dye and Thome.

Kotsay should be resigned and Ankiel or Blalock could make a nice addition as DH vs RHP while occasionally filling in at the corner IF for Blalock or OF with Ankiel. Uribe could be an option as well if cheap.

KW should pursue Abreu and top out at $24/2yrs.100 RBIs the past 7 seasons, career OBP over 400 and close to 100 runs scored every year. Soscia has repeatedly credited Abreu for setting the tone of his teams patient successful approach this season.

I think bringing back Ramon Hernandez makes sense, just because they have no better options in the system, and there are few better on the free agent market. At least Hernandez can give you a decent OBP. Gregg Zaun could always be another alternative for the Reds, a guy who consistantly posts solid OBP's.

if the reds dont resign him which i hope they do .. rod barjas could be a decent option.. but i would take a healthy ramon over anyone in the catcher free agent market this year

Shimizu is an average pitcher. He let it be known before that he envisioned coming to the states. He may be the best starter coming from Japan, but he's fifth starter material. Igarashi may get signed as a closer when he comes over this off season.

bjsguess is obviously a White Sox hater....and a moron. You conveniently started your "analysis" in 2006. Why dont we start in 2005? Oh, because that hurts your case. Since 2005, the White Sox have won the division twice. Yep, thats two out of five years. Also, in 2006 the division was anything BUT weak. Three teams had 90 or more wins in that season, making it the best division in baseball. Any "blind faith" in KW that White Sox fans have is because the guy is a winner, and he will make the moves to put a winning team on the field.

When a player is making $15 million or $20 million (or $30 million like a-rod), why do managers give mvp or cy young bonus money? Shouldn't a player be expected to contend for these titles if you are giving them a salary this large? Just another idiotic submission by the GM's (not as bad as no-trade clauses but bad enough)
Posted by: tuna411 | October 23, 2009 at 08:22 AM
KW is doing a great job. Only a couple of years ago the AL Central was the best in baseball.
Posted by: rockford | October 23, 2009 at 09:17 AM
In your opinion, would the Sox and Marlins consider a Papelbon and Clay Buchholz for Hanley Ramirez and prospects deal?
Posted by: Tony Terzi | October 23, 2009 at 09:37 AM
KW takes chances. Sometimes it pays off (2005), sometimes it doesn't(2 of the last 3 years). As far as GM's go, you could do worse. Over his 8 or 9 years he's done "OK".
