2009 Elias Rankings Released

The 2009 Elias Rankings have been released, and Ed Price of AOL FanHouse has a full list of the Type-A and B free agents.

Our 2010 MLB Free Agent list has been updated, and below is a summary of differences between the official rankings, and those projected by Eddie Bajek.

  • Chone Figgins qualifies as a Type-A, not a Type-B as projected.
  • Vladimir Guerrero qualifies as a Type-B, not a Type-A as projected.
  • Gregg Zaun goes from no compensation to Type-B.
  • Jerry Hairston Jr. goes from Type-B to no compensation.
  • Hideki Matsui goes from Type-B to no compensation.
  • Aubrey Huff goes from Type-B to no compensation.

If you're not sure how free agent compensation works, or if you just forgot, make sure you check out our primer.

Good news for Vladdy. Bad news for Melvin.

How could Matsui not qualify as a Type B? He had a pretty good year... Is it just because he doesn't play in the field?

Wow at Matsui..No way Yankees offer arbitration now.

Hmmmmm... something must have been off with DH's. Does anybody have access to the whole list? I want to look at some discrepancies.

lol at Mora being a type A.

Where are the scores? I'm curious just how close someone like Crawford didn't make it as a Type A.

So Mora qualifying as a type A just kind of made himself unsignable until June, huh?

Either that or he will have to take a severe paycut.

Looks like the O's won't offer arbitration to mora because he would accept since no one else will sign him

If the Orioles were dumb enough to offer arbitration to Mora he would certainly accept it. I'd be shocked if they offered arb.

I don't think it would be worth it, even if he could take the 400,000 or so as the minimum.

If a team doesn't offer arbitration, then the compensation doesn't matter.

It actually helps Mora, because now the Orioles surely won't offer arbitration and there's nothing to stop any team from signing him (other than his performance...).

Type A makes the decision harder for the team - it only affects the player if the old team offers arb and he turns it down because he wants to sign elsewhere.

Any explanation for the change to Matsui's ranking? He had a good year, the only DHs better than him in AVG/OBP/SLG were Adam Lind and Jason Kubel according to fangraphs.

Yanks weren't offering Matsui arbitration either way. He would have been too expensive through the arbitration process (a player is only allowed to take a certain % in a pay cut, not sure what it is though) and if the Yanks want to bring him back it would on a much cheaper one year deal.

Damon qualified as a type A though, wonder if they are going to offer arbitration to him.

No. It just means that the Orioles can not offer arbitration unless they are planning on bringing him back.

The changes really dont affect much though - non of these players were likely to receive offers other then Figgins.

The Angels make out like bandits though, now they will get Type-A if/when Figgins leaves and have a better chance of receiving a comp-pick if they offer Vlad arbitration. No team would have signed Guerrero if it meant losing a 1st rounder, so he would have been pretty much forced to accept forcing the Angels to never offer in the first place. Now they can though, and in a worst case they get their DH back (like they would prefer anyway if a large commitment wasnt needed). In a best case they see him sign elseware and they get a supplemental pick while the new team isnt penalized. As long as the Angels have the money if he accepts (which they do), it becomes almost a no-brainer to offer it to him now.

I don't have access to my numbers or personal email now. I won't be able to figure out why the DH's dropped. My guess is that somebody qualified as a 3B that I had as a DH, thus with that player moving over, the 3B's all moved up and the DH's down.

Again, if anybody has access to the numbers, please email to me at ebajek@gmail.com.

Thanks.

Great news for the Angels. This will remove the temptation of offering Vlad arb and will net us picks for Figgins.

Can only laugh at Mora as a Type A. Thank God, didnt want him as a Twins option at 3rd.

This is a severely flawed system if Jason Varitek is somehow a type B. He is a type garbage or a type liability.

What to do with Aubrey Huff? Two years ago he was worth 18.9 million according to Fangraphs and in 2009 Fangraphs had him at -5.1 (that is a negative value).

I wonder what his value is this offseason. He clearly shouldnt be a starter in the field, but he would be pretty solid as a DH/4th OF/backup CI. Ironically, Detroit seems like the best fit although that is unlikely. I wonder if Kansas City, Cleveland, Toronto, Texas, or Oakland will show interest. He could be a huge bargin this year.

Also, if the Yankees are looking to save money (not likely) they could sign Huff for about a third of what Matsui would cost and as long as they dont play him in the field the droppoff would be relatively small.

Players can take more than a 20% haircut through arbitration. That rule only applies to players who are under team control. For guys like Vlad the Angels could offer him $5m even though he made $15m last year.

Bretwk - I mentioned this on another thread about Huff. I think he would make a great platoon type partner with guys like Delgado, N Johnson, and maybe even Branyan. Guys that have significant injury questions.

So, a combo of Delgado (on a 1/$5 type deal) and Huff (on a 1/$3 contract) would probably yield you some decent production and protect against injury.

Is this system honestly trying to say that Mora is a type A while Matsui is no compensation?? I think I lost all respect for this ridiculous system.

Matsui>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Mora

Its not even close.

Yeah, it's a non-issue from the Yanks perspective but the system is definetly screwey.
