« Varitek To Discuss Player Option | Main | Giants Rumors: Molina, Pudge, Bay, Holliday »
The Mets won't pursue Jason Varitek if he turns down his player option and becomes a free agent, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Two Mets officials tell Sherman that the club wants a catcher who can catch more than 100 games.
They had interest in the veteran catcher last offseason, but now the Mets covet more durable catchers - Bengie Molina may be a consideration. Molina has caught more games than Varitek over the course of the last three seasons, but Varitek hasn't caught fewer than 100 games since 2001, so it's surprising to see a club question his durability.
As Sherman points out, the Mariners and Nationals could have interest in Varitek if he opts to explore free agency.

is Tek even a 70-80 game catcher? the problem is his defensive skills are week, any team with a legit 50 steal guy could get 3+ steals a game off of him. No team is going too pay him more then 3 mil, if they do they're fools or the nationals. he will be back with the sox.

Well, that's good news lol.

they questioned his durability so they wouldn't get bad PR from saying he's not good anymore.
"Sorry, no, we're looking for GOOD players, not Jason Varitek" would get some bad press and the Mets already have plenty of that.

Why would anybody pursue Jason Varitek?

Well if you're going to pursue someone, Varitek is a good choice....on those knees, your chances of catching him are pretty high.

Muggi...that was a really bad joke lol
But yeah, at this point, Tek has to be a last resort type of catcher for most teams.

I'm ok with the Mets pursuing Bengie Molina if the money's right. If he gets hurt, we're used to having crappy hitting catchers anyway. With Omir Santos as a decnt enough backup and Josh Thole getting AAA at-bats in the mean time, it seems like a solid decision. Sign me up.

EastCoast: hehe awful, but I couldn't resist.

There sure is a lot of hubub on this site about a 37 year old catcher who should have retired last year.

Another bad, bad idea. Better off letting Thole catch for league minimum, especially since he's tearing up the minors, and put the money towards LF or SP than signing Molina.
