« Dodgers Not Pursuing Aroldis Chapman | Main | Heyman's Latest: Holliday, Lackey, Bay, Trades »
No surprise here, though now it's official: The Red Sox have exercised their $7.1MM option for Victor Martinez according to Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe. This was about as much of a no-brainer as they come.
The 30-year-old Martinez hit .303/.381/.480 this season, .336/.405/.507 after coming to Boston at the trade deadline. He split his time in the field almost equally between catcher and first base, and FanGraphs values V-Mart's 2009 production at $21.9MM.

I guess i'll be first here. Victor is worth at least double that amount. Look for the sox to look into signing him long term early in spring training. Lowell's contract is up after 2010 and WHEN they go after Mauer after next year they can always shift Youkilis to 3rd play Victor at 1st and play Mauer at catcher. The bonus here would be Ortiz's contract also being up they could give both Mauer and Martinez some DH time as well to give them (at least) a mental rest from playing in the field.

Although I and all of RSN LOVE the thought of Mauer wearing a Sox uniform,It already looks as if the twins are signing and acquiring the pieces(Hardy, pick up Cuddyers option..so far) to make Mauer comfortable signing an extension...JMHO but I think he'll sign with the Twinkies soon enough..Just have to wait and see I guess..

This version of the Red Sox is built to peak from the years 2011 to 2014. Any success this past year and the year coming up is icing on the cake in my opinion. And i look for them to do some major upgrading this year and next. Remember that in the next couple years the following contracts are coming off the books: Ortiz 12.5 mil, Lowell 12 mil, Drew 14 mil, and Lugo (who the sox are still paying most of) 8 mil. The simple math shows you that they will have to give some of that money to upcoming talent (papelbons a maybe) ellsbury, bucholtz, bard etc.. This will be a very very strong team built around power pitching, elite on base percentage and above average defense

Speak for yourself as a Red Sox fan but more so a baseball fan I'd love to see the Twins lock up Mauer. It's good for baseball.

Agreed. Only Red Sox fans would be happy to see Mauer in Boston.

ronnyronron9: and WHEN they go after Mauer after next year
Let me guess? Sox Fan? Mauer is doing a semi-Pujols, made popular after the debacle that was Barry Bonds' postseason career, 151 ABs 48 games. Pujols by contrast has 199 ABs in 56 games. These guys know that there no point having more money than sub-saharan Africa if you don't get to play in October. Mauer, like Pujols, will stick in Minnesota as long as they can compete and get to October consistently. Fortunatley for the Twins and unfortunatley for Mauer's potential suitors, the Twins play in a winnable division with a new stadium and a potentially enlarged payroll. So i can see Mauer in a Twins uniform for a long time.

I agree that Mauer signing with the twins is good for baseball. Much like Prince signing with the brewers long term, Pujols being a cardinal for life, Adrian Gonzalez staying in San Diego forever, etc etc would be wonderful for paridy in the game.. However there are two factors that make me beleive one or maybe none of the above scenarios will take place.. 1. the economy 2. reality
Posted by: ronnyronron9 | November 09, 2009 at 12:45 PM
I am a sox fan. what gave that away.. the fact that i was giving my opinion on what the sox will do in the next 5 years?? But WHEN the sox go after Mauer is a sentance that you can insert any team into Yankees, Mets, Angels, Tigers.. any team that has the payroll flexibility to pay him 23 to 30 mil a year for 7 or more years.. As we saw with CC and Texiera, the elite players will still get the loaded contract no matter the economic state. If he's smart he will wait till free agency and see if the Twins can match what the above teams are willing to put in front of him. He may have the 2nd biggest contract in history if he does... and he will go to the postseason yearly or at least be on a winning team yearly on any of those teams

Mauer will resign with the Twins. He loves Minnesota. They'll offer a lot of money, not yankee or sox money but he's not a greedy player, plus the twins are always contenders.

why does mauer always come up? leave it alone, its boring talking about it over and over and over and over
Posted by: 04Forever | November 09, 2009 at 12:58 PM
ronny: If he's smart he'll wait and see what those teams after him? So smart to you is just taking the biggest contract possible? If he wants to stay in Minnesota and play for the teams he loves and so his parents can still come watch every game he plays in, that is not smart?
I think he will make the "smart" move and take his 20 mil a year and play for the team he loves and be a Twinkie for life! I hope

ronnyronron9: I know what you mean about reality, i just think that, in the case of Mauer, taking into account all of what he's said (http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/10/mauer-not-really-interested-in-being-bestpaid.html) its more likely that he plays on a competitive Twins team than anywhere else. And, i personally beleive that A-Gon goes to the Red Sox sooner rather than later. Also, i was writing my reply after only your first comment and did not intend for it to sound quite so nasty, my apologies.

I do not think he is a greedy player either. But, lets say and be logical here...
Twins offer 7 years 22 per year.
That works out to 154 million over the life if the contract.
Big market team offer 8 years 28 million per year That works out to 224 million over the life of the contract.
That is 70 MILLION DOLLARS in guaranteed money. Almost 50 percent more to leave the Twins...
It is not greed its logic.

I also hope Mauer stays with the Twins and I think he will. I hope the Red Sox can sign Victor to a 3 or 4 year extension this offseason, he is a great fit on this club and a great team guy.

Cot's has the option value at $7.7M ($7M base, 500k assignment bonus, 2x 100k escaltors for making All Star teams), but who's counting.

04forever,
Get a job. I read these posts all the time but rarely have time to enter my thoughts.. However you are always on here telling poeple how wrong they are and... by the way its nearly 2010. 6 years have passed. its not going to be 04 forever. At least my thoughts are logical and have an explanation..
I think i speak for alot of poeple who try and post their opinion and get nasty responses.

Cot's Contracts suggests the option is for $7.5 million - not $7.1 million.

Why would the Red Sox go for Mauer when they have Martinez?
Posted by: Don'tEvenCallMeFake | November 09, 2009 at 05:32 PM
crazy redsox fans. dont you think the yankees would be all over Mauer if it was money issue? redsox would have a better chance of gettin justin morneau if he was availible.

Good move by the Sox, but it was a no-brainer.
Don't even think about Mauer until he declares himself to become a free agent. I can't see him playing anywhere but Minnesota, and it seems like they're actually trying to make moves to keep him. Don't be surprised if they make a move for a project pitcher like Sheets or Harden on the cheap side just to give Mauer even more insurance.

Keep Martinez at catcher this year than move him to 1st, Youk to 3rd, and sign Mauer and let him catch
