Odds & Ends: Cubs, Lowell, Mauer, Adrian

By Tim Dierkes | February 17, 2010 at 1:33pm CDT

Links for Wednesday…

  • I recently did an Orioles-centric phone interview with Tom Sedlacek of the Bowie Baysox website.
  • The Cubs signed 18-year-old Korean righty Kim Jin-yeong for $1.2MM, reports Matt DeWoskin of True Stories Of Korean Baseball.  I have heard that this is not official yet, however.
  • Ted Lilly would like to remain with the Cubs beyond 2010, writes Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune, but the lefty doesn't want to be a distraction.
  • WEEI's Rob Bradford chatted with Mike Lowell about his near-trade to the Rangers and his future with the Red Sox.
  • Bob Nightengale of USA Today examines the Joe Mauer extension situation, drawing a parallel to Cal Ripken in 1992.
  • This time, Padres CEO Jeff Moorad talked about hope and optimism regarding an extension for Adrian Gonzalez (Bill Center of the San Diego Union-Tribune reporting).
  • Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports tweets that the Nationals, Reds, and Indians made big league offers to Chien-Ming Wang, while the Dodgers and Rays showed interest but did not make offers.
  • Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports wonders if the Tigers traded Curtis Granderson because they soured on him as a player.
  • Maury Brown of The Biz of Baseball has the numbers on the five remaining arbitration cases.

i hope the cubs can keep lilly, he is a solid lefty pitcher. otherwise it’ll be time for gorzelanny and marshall to get in the rotation

It’s good to beat out the Reds after they snagged Aroldis Chapman. It also dispels the idea that the Nats were the only ones interested. There were some who intimated that the Nats weren’t as capable as other teams to see that Wang was too injured to bother with.

I gotta wonder if Hoyer or someone else in the Pads management told Moorad to change his tone to at least give Hoyer some bargaining room.

Yeah, because you know Hendry is a fool who will pay you way more money and length (with a no-trade) then you could ever imagine, lol.

Anyway, would welcome you back but at a realistic price – not a Hendry one! 🙂

Looking back, Lilly was Hendry’s best FA signing so far. Just a guess, but I don’t see the Cubs (Hendry or whomever) handing out NTCs like candy anymore.

Agree on him being Hendry’s bet contract so far. He has actually been just as to even more productive then our 18MM/per “ace”.

But still fear what that production could turn into contract wise with Hendry at the helm. I wouldnt trust him renegotiating the contract with my lawn man, lol. And oh do I hope youre right about the no-trade thing. I dread seeing one or two more being given on his way out the door.

Edit to say – what the heck did both of us say “so far” for? Like Hendry will ever have a good signing like this again. When randomly throwing darts at a wall, a couple of them must hit the board. But once one hits bullseye its almost a certainty another wont, lol.

“Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports wonders if the Tigers traded Curtis Granderson because they soured on him as a player.”

That’s okay we’ll take him in New York when you consider he hit 30 HR and 71 RBI’s in a mediocre Detroit Lineup and a pitcher friendly park

Had season lines of .249 AVG, .327 OBP, .453 SLG, .780 OPS and his career lines are .272 AVG, .344 OBP, .484 SLG, .828 OPS.

In his entire career he is a far better hitter away from Comerica Park

    2006 Home – .249 AVG, .326 OBP, .389 SLG, .715 OPS, 7 HR, 33 RBI
    2006 Away – .271 AVG, .343 OBP, .485 SLG, .828 OPS, 12 HR, 35 RBI

    2007 Home – .286 AVG, .351 OBP, .512 SLG, .863 OPS, 10 HR, 36 RBI
    2007 Away – .318 AVG, .370 OBP, .592 SLG, .962 OPS, 13 HR, 38 RBI

    2008 Home – .277 AVG, .361 OBP, .493 SLG, .854 OPS, 11 HR, 35 RBI
    2008 Away – .283 AVG, .368 OBP, .495 SLG, .863 OPS, 11 HR, 31 RBI

    2009 Home – .230 AVG, .307 OBP, .388 SLG, .695 OPS, 10 HR, 34 RBI
    2009 Away – .267 AVG, .345 OBP, .516 SLG, .861 OPS, 20 HR, 37 RBI

His AVG, OBP, SLG, OPS are all better away from Comerica in his career, coming to Yankee Stadium, with that lefty swing of his he is a perfect fit for that ballpark and Right Field in such a good lineup.

His Batting Average on Balls in Play was .275 (.299 was the league average) and in his career Granderson average was always above league average on balls in play, except last season.

At 29 years of age, he will have a solid bounce back season while patrolling the Outfield, its not like he is some washed up veteran on his last legs.

I’ve followed Curtis for a few years (on my keeper-league fantasy roster), and I’d be excited if I were you as well. The kid has quietly been a stud for years, and is likely to get the recognition he deserves in NY.

18 years old and throws at 92 already sounds pretty good to me…..but as we have seen over the years someone who may end up throwing 95 mph doesn’t mean anything unless he can find the plate consistently.Still nice to see the cubs looking at all avenues for talent not just the main stream.

Why in the world would Adrian Gonzalez consider staying in San Diego? Anyone who believes he’s sticking around is delusional.

Pad’s terrible TV contract expires after the 11 season. With the huge increase they will see in revenue – they will be able to afford Adrian – unless they get an offer they can’t refuse.

Whether or not they can afford him is neither here nor there. The issue is what incentive is there for him to return? There is none.

exactly!! Just because the Padres are going to have some money to pay him doesnt mean he’s going to sign. He’s going to realize he can get payed a lot more and be on a contending team with a chance at rings if he heads out. I project alot of AL team will try to scoop him up because he plays D and if he needs a break put him in DH. Plus that pull and away power he has will be great in alot of AL ballparks.
