Players Avoiding Arbitration: Monday

By Mike Axisa | February 8, 2010 at 6:58pm CDT

We'll keep tabs of any players that avoid arbitration here…

  • MLB.com's Matthew Leach tweets that the Cardinals and Skip Schumaker have agreed to a two-year deal, avoiding arbitration. The AP (via SI.com) reports that Schumaker will earn $2MM in 2010 and $2.7MM in 2011, with another $300K in performance bonuses. He had filed for $2.75MM, the team $1.45MM.

Damn he only filed for 2.75? For a .300 hitting lead off guy, I’d think he want 4+

A solid move by the cards, they probably can get two cheap years out of Skip at 2nd then trade him off with one arb year left and let Descalso or some other kid take over second base.

Good deal but I think Schumaker will still have one year left of arbitration. this was only his 1st year being arbitration eligible.

His defense is slowly improving, but I wouldn’t be against trading him for pitching if someone like Descalso or Solano prove they can play. Any money we can save by going young can be put towards a Pujols extension.

And I’d rather have defense up the middle…something the Cards have for the most part with Rasmus, Ryan, and Molina. (That’s pretty darn good actually as Rasmus had a 10.6 UZR and Ryan had an 8.9 UZR in 2009, and Molina is Molina). Hopefully Schu becomes good enough to be league average. He’ll never win a gold glove, but his UZR needs to be better than -7.7.

It was in the positives the 2nd half(or close to it) when he started figuring things out.

I have a feeling Skip Schumaker won’t be the difference on whether or not Pujols and the Cardinals agree to an extension.

This year or next year? No. But once he reaches free agency, he might want to make 5+ mil a season…I’d rather pass and give 2B to a younger player who can give the same production.

I’m not anti-Skip. I’m just being realistic. The Cardinals didn’t resign Womack, Grudzy, Eckstein, or Izturis because they wanted just a little more money. Why should that change with Skip? In 3 years when he becomes a FA, I really do see them passing for cheaper talent.

i doubt the even make it through his 3rd arb year. there’s a lot of money already guaranteed in 2012. it’ll almost definitely be someone like descalso, greene, kozma playing 2B by then
