Pirates Designate Jack Taschner For Assignment

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 8, 2010 at 8:42pm CDT

The Pirates designated Jack Taschner for assignment, according to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The 32-year-old left-hander posted a 6.05 ERA in 17 appearances in the majors this year.  The Pirates, who struck out 14 times against Stephen Strasburg tonight, also optioned Jeff Clement to the minors.

Taschner's strikeout (7.9 K/9) and walk (3.7 BB/9) numbers are better than they have been in recent years, but he is allowing lots of hits, as usual. Though he has struggled mightily against right-handed batters in his career, Taschner's rate stats have historically been better against lefties (8.3 K/9, 4.0 BB/9).

Clement really needs to go. I don’t care if Pearce is starting, Clement cannot hit worth a lick. I’m really psyched that Lincoln is coming up tomorrow and hopefully he can have a good debut, it’s only a matter of time until Tabata and Alvarez will come up to finally make this Pirate’s team more exciting to watch.

Is Pearce the other player to be added along with Lincoln? I was just listening to Rocco’s show and he said the other spot on the 25 man was unknown…possibly could be Tabata or Alvarez.

hoping its one of the 2, pearce is still rehabbing, but with doumit banged up, it might be a catcher like kratz, then when doumits back, kratz goes back down and we get pedro or tabata

It’s looking like Pearce to me. He’s eligible to come off the DL tomorrow and the Bucs said he would spend 5 days in Bradenton starting on this past Sunday…but he wasn’t in the lineup for either of their games today…and now there is obviously a need for a first baseman….my bet is on Pearce.

It’s Tabata. He’s making his debut tomorrow night with Lincoln. Maybe batting leadoff? Jones will move back to first.

I have no reason not to believe you and I really hope that you’re right, but I’m just not finding it anywhere. Care to point me in the right direction?

EDIT: The PPG is now reporting it. Nevermind and thanks!

Sorry for the delay – PPG was where I saw it too. Awesome news. Should see a whole flurry of promotions through the system tomorrow, I would guess.

Clement needs to play everyday,he has raw power and it does him no good playing 2 or 3 days a week. Pearce when he comes of the DL can take over that role. I would say Church is the next guy they dfa.

I agree i look for Church to go next…People say Milledge but you know what you still have years of control on him and Hes just 25 and plays good Defense and gets some clutch hits…I still see the potential being there and whats the worst thing if he becomes a 4th outfielder? and its Interesting there is a open spot on the 40 man roster now… I wonder if theres not a trade coming soon…All these pitching the bucs have drafted looks like they could possibly move some young pitching for some position players.
