It’s a shame dipoto left the Angels. I really liked what he was doing. Arte and Scioscia really messed that up.

So his options are to stay with the Sox as an advisor without any real power or be the man in charge of a team that’s been said to be on the cusp for a few years… Good luck in Seattle Dipoto!

Anybody want to share what the story was behind him and Arte Moreno disagreeing on signing Hamilton and Pujols? It sounds like he was not really on board for both. We need some consistent hitters to surround our big bats in the order!

An excellent day for both the Mariners and DiPoto.

Certainly not a horrible decision by the M’s, but as the article above mentions, DiPoto’s free agent signings (at least the ones not mandated by Arte Moreno) have been questionable, so I’ll have to reserve judgment until after he’s made a few signings. I like the statistical skill set DiPoto brings, and hopefully he’ll also clean house in the front office to get rid of the “old school” sorts who simply aren’t down with OBP (apologies to Naughty by Nature.)
The M’s have had 12 years of poor talent evaluation at both the major and minor league levels under Bill Bavasi and Jack Zduriencik, so DiPoto has his work cut out for him, as there’s not a lot on the farm coming up to help the team in the near future. I know they don’t want to waste another year of Felix’s, Cano’s, and Seager’s primes, but this team is more than a “few players away” from being a legit contender. There are still multiple holes in the lineup, an iffy rotation after Felix (Iwakuma’s a free agent, Walker was very inconsistent, Paxton is turning into the pitching equivalent of Michael Saunders, etc.), and the bullpen needs a major facelift, especially if Charlie Furbush isn’t going to be back on time.
Can/did DiPoto convince ownership that some kind of rebuild is needed? If so, guys like Smith, Trumbo, Morrison, etc., could be on their ways out (Morrison would probably be non-tendered in a few months anyway. If not, M’s fans may have another long year ahead of them.

As a Mariners fan I am hoping this works out but I was really hoping for Eppler. The Angels farm system, a major issue with the Ms, is only slightly better than Seattle’s. I don’t think anyone should rush to give JD credit for signing some of the big ticket free agents when at the time it was Moreno who really pushed for them. There is another issue that bugs me, he quit on his team. I don’t care what the reason was you don’t jump ship especially when your team is fighting for a division championship. Despite the negatives DiPoto is light years better than the guy he replaced.

I give him credit for *not* wanting to sign Pujols/Hamilton. I’m sure part of his reasoning was that he would have preferred to keep the first round picks and I don’t blame him.
As for quitting on his team, read into it a bit more. Sounds like he had the choice to resign or be fired, pretty much. It was a volatile situation and was going to end badly. Moreno sided with Scoscia. Not a position for a GM to be in.

I’d say he can’t be any worst than the last gm, but it seems that they always find a way to be worst.
