Sal Perez must have the worst agent in sports.

Well, he had only played in 39 MLB games before that extension. What guarantee did Perez have that he would ever do as good again, or that he wouldn’t get injured and be out of baseball within a few months? He turned 39 games, 158 PA into $7 million dollars. Not bad. It was a risk for both sides. And you can also consider that both Perez and his agent understood that he was playing for a small market, low revenue team (and yes, they’ve had an upswing since then because of playoffs and WS, but you couldn’t count on that in advance).

You got that right Joey Pankake! What a bargain in today’s market!

He has, perhaps unsurprisingly, changed representation since signing that extension.
Then again, we could’ve said the exact same thing if Jon Singleton had developed into an everyday first baseman after signing a five-year, $10MM extension two years later than Perez did.
Not going out of my way to defend the $7MM extension — it is indeed brutal for Perez — but there are plenty of instances of guys who turn down the club friendly deals and, in hindsight, should absolutely have taken them.
Side note: It’s amusing to look back at the comments on that Perez extension. The Royals had called a press conference to make a “major” announcement, and so many took exception to that labeling and responded angrily and sarcastically with things like “Are you kidding? Who cares?” and “This is barely news.”
