By Mike Axisa | January 7, 2011 at 8:50am CDT

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Beltre, Braves, Dye, Wells

By Mike Axisa | December 31, 2010 at 4:12pm CDT

On this date in 1972, Roberto Clemente was killed when a plane carrying him and relief aid for people affected by a earthquake in Nicaragua crashed into the ocean off the coast of Puerto Rico immediately after takeoff. Clemente, 38 at the time of his death, was a .317/.359/.475 career hitter in 18 seasons with the Bucs, picking up 3,000 career hits on the nose. He was posthumously elected to the Hall of Fame in 1973 after voters elected to waive the traditional five-year waiting period. MLB honors Clemente's charity work each year by presenting the Robert Clemente Award to the player "who combines a dedication to giving back to the community with outstanding skills on the baseball field."

Here's the final batch of links for 2010…

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Greinke, Rangers, Pavano

By Mike Axisa | December 24, 2010 at 10:21am CDT

On this date five years ago, the Nationals and lefty reliever Mike Stanton agreed to a one-year contract worth $1MM, making him the first player in Washington Nationals history to have two stints with the team. Stanton made 30 appearances with the club in 2005 before being traded to the Red Sox, and his second stint in 2006 lasted 56 appearances before being traded to the Giants.

Here is this week's collection of links, with a healthy dose of Zack Greinke talk…

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Phillies, Uggla, Carmona

By Mike Axisa | December 17, 2010 at 9:44am CDT

On this date six years ago, a three-team trade that would have sent Randy Johnson and Kazuhisa Ishii to the Yankees, Shawn Green and Brad Penny to the Diamondbacks, and Javier Vazquez plus prospects to the Dodgers fell apart when Los Angeles backed out. The Big Unit ended up with the Yanks and Green with the D'Backs anyway, but Penny stayed with the Dodgers while Vazquez went to Arizona. Ishii ended up with the Mets in a separate deal.

There's no backing out of these links, here's the best from around the web…

  • Long Drive tells us how the animosity towards Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. has changed in the last year.
  • Purple Row explains what Troy Tulowitzki's contract extension tells us about Todd Helton's original mega-deal.
  • Caught Looking wonders what would have happened if Cliff Lee had signed with the Pirates.

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Lee, Greinke, Crawford

By Mike Axisa | December 11, 2010 at 12:28pm CDT

On this date in 1973, the late Ron Santo became the first player in baseball history to invoke 10-and-5 rights, blocking a trade that would have sent him from the Cubs to the Angels. Santo instead consented to a trade to the White Sox, where he spent the final season of his great career.

Here are this week's batch of links…

  • Baseball Time In Arlington writes about the comparison between Cliff Lee and Alex Rodriguez, with regards to the Rangers' budget.
  • Prospect Insider thinks the Mariners should go get Zack Greinke.

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Votto, Jenks, Lee, Padres

By Mike Axisa | December 3, 2010 at 11:46am CDT

On this date two years ago, the Red Sox signed then-reigning AL MVP Dustin Pedroia to a six-year contract worth $40.5MM. The deal bought out all of his arbitration eligible years plus two free agent years with a club option for a third. Given the contract just signed by another middle infielder at a similar age (Troy Tulowitzki), it sure looks like Boston saved themselves a boatload of money with Pedroia's deal.

Here are this week's links, which aren't looking for a long-term contract…

  • Speaking of Tulo's deal, Red Reporter wants to know if you'd give Joey Votto a ten-year contract.

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Konerko, Jeter, Lee, Beltre

By Mike Axisa | November 26, 2010 at 9:45am CDT

On this date back in 1974, Catfish Hunter met with Oakland A's owner Charles Finley and Peter Seitz of the American Arbitration Association in New York after the team failed to make a $50,000 payment into a long-term annuity fund. The right-hander claimed that his contract had been violated, and Seitz eventually ruled in his favor. Hunter became the first big name free agent in baseball history, later signing a five-year, $3.5MM contract with the Yankees that made him the highest-paid player in baseball history.

Here's a helping of links that go well with Thanksgiving leftovers…

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Uggla, Rollins, Giants, Upton

By Mike Axisa | November 19, 2010 at 11:30am CDT

On this date 20 years ago, a 26-year-old Barry Bonds took home his first National League MVP Award thanks to a .301/.406/.565 season with the Pirates. He went on to win the award again in 1992, his final season in Pittsburgh, and then five more times with the Giants. The latter part of Bonds' career was clouded by PED allegations, but he did hit .301/.424/.566 in his final three seasons with the Pirates and .305/.438/.600 with far more unintentional walks (825) than strikeouts (685) from 1990-1998, age 26-34. Barry could have retired at that point and waltzed into the Hall of Fame on the first ballot.

Here's a look at the best the baseball blogosphere had to offer this week…

  • We Should Be GMs celebrates Omar Vizquel, the last remaining active player from the 1980's.
  • Capitol Avenue Club wonders what's next for the Braves following the Dan Uggla trade.

  • Crashburn Alley says that right now is a prime opportunity for the Phillies to sign Jimmy Rollins to a contract extension.
  • Fenway Faithful Reports thinks that Victor Martinez is destined to sign with the Tigers.
  • Splashing Pumpkins breaks down some shortstop options for the Giants.
  • Baseball Time In Arlington explains the regression that the Rangers could experience.
  • FanSpeak believes the Nationals should go all-in to acquire Justin Upton.
  • Boston Sports Pulse provides a blueprint for the Red Sox offseason.
  • Phoul Ballz looks at Matt Rizzotti, a Phillies' farmhand that will be eligible for this year's Rule 5 Draft.
  • The Sports Banter finds some interesting minor league free agents.

  • SPANdemonium muses about why teams have to wait a year before trading drafted players.

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Cox, Crawford, DeJesus

By Mike Axisa | November 12, 2010 at 12:00pm CDT

Two years ago today the Athletics acquired Matt Holliday from the Rockies in exchange for Carlos Gonzalez, Huston Street, and Greg Smith. Holliday hit .286/.378/.454 in exactly 400 plate appearances with Oakland before being dealt to the Cardinals for a package led by Brett Wallace at the 2009 trade deadline.

Street has battled injuries but has been solid when on the mound for Colorado, pitching to a 3.30 ERA with 9.5 K/9 and 2.0 BB/9 in 109 innings. Smith has appeared in just eight games for the Rox (all starts), putting up a 6.23 ERA. The real get was CarGo, who will certainly be in the MVP mix after a .336/.376/.598 season with 34 doubles, 34 homers, 26 stolen bases, and a batting title.

The hot stove league will certainly bring us more blockbuster trades, but for now you'll have to settle for this long collection of links, the best the blogosphere had to offer this week…

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Braves, Rangers, Rays, Haren

By Mike Axisa | October 29, 2010 at 10:26am CDT

The Phillies won their second World Series in franchise history two years ago today, beating the Rays in the first suspended game in series history. Game Five started on October 27th, 2008, and the two clubs played to a 2-2 tie through the first five and a half innings before rain forced the suspension. The game didn't resume until October 29th due to the weather, but when it finallly did the Phillies outscored Tampa 2-1 the rest of the way for a 4-3 final score.

There's no weather-related delay for these links; here's the best from around the web this week…
