White Sox Rumors

White Sox Interested In Joel Hanrahan

By Tim Dierkes | July 31, 2008 at 2:29pm CDT

2:29pm: Correction: the Sox are interested in Nationals closer Joel Hanrahan, not Lannan.

1:00pm: WSCR Radio in Chicago reports that the White Sox are interested in 23 year-old Nationals lefty John Lannan.  Jon Heyman has heard the same.  He has a fine 3.33 ERA in 119 innings this year.  Not much of a strikeout rate though.

White Sox Targeting Street

By Tim Dierkes | July 31, 2008 at 6:57am CDT

According to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, the White Sox are targeting reliever Huston Street in trade talks.  However, they might not have the prospects to pull it off.  GM Kenny Williams may have to include a third or even fourth team to find a group of players Billy Beane likes.

Street, 25 in August, is under team control through 2010.

Stark’s Latest: Aurilia, Fuentes, Orlando Cabrera

By Tim Dierkes | July 30, 2008 at 2:18pm CDT

New collection of rumors from ESPN’s Jayson Stark…

  • The Twins have asked the Giants about Rich Aurilia.  They’ve been dangling Boof Bonser for a position player; would they trade him back to San Francisco for Aurilia?
  • On the Phillies’ radar: John Grabow, Will Ohman, Arthur Rhodes, and Jack Taschner.
  • A Brian Fuentes trade remains doubtful.
  • The White Sox will trade Orlando Cabrera for the right pitcher.  The Sox aren’t generating much interest in their prospects.

Rangers Rumors: Laird, Greinke, Bonser, Masset

By Tim Dierkes | July 30, 2008 at 2:10pm CDT

Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram has Rangers rumors for us today.

  • Wilson sums up the suitors for catcher Gerald Laird: Yankees, Reds, Marlins, and Brewers.  The Giants could also jump in if they trade Bengie Molina. Wilson heard that the Rangers are not shopping Laird, though.
  • The Rangers inquired on three pitchers recently: Zack Greinke of the Royals, Boof Bonser of the Twins, and Nick Masset of the White Sox.  Greinke would be near-impossible to pry loose, though Chris Davis would be an interesting offer.

Molony’s Latest: Ohman, Fuentes, Sherrill, Tejada

By Tim Dierkes | July 29, 2008 at 1:15pm CDT

Here’s a new column from MLB.com’s Jim Molony.

  • Will Ohman suitors: the Marlins, Red Sox, Rays, Tigers and White Sox.  Molony says the Braves aren’t highly motivated to trade Ohman, as they might want to re-sign him for ’09.  Odd.
  • The Rockies would need to be bowled over, but the Cardinals, Mets, Phillies, Rays, Red Sox, White Sox and Yankees still like Brian Fuentes.
  • George Sherrill suitors: Cardinals, Dodgers, Marlins, Phillies, Red Sox and Tigers.  He’s another reliever unlikely to be dealt.
  • Molony disagrees with other reports on the Red Sox and Miguel Tejada; he says they did inquire but were rebuffed.

Carroll’s Latest: Torrealba, Wheeler, Dunn

By Tim Dierkes | July 28, 2008 at 10:56pm CDT

Here’s the latest from Will Carroll at Baseball Prospectus.  Some of this info is from this afternoon, so I apologize for the tardiness.

  • The Rockies may still move a lesser player like Yorvit Torrealba, if anyone’s interested.  There doesn’t seem to be a match with the catching-hungry Marlins though.
  • Carroll tosses a new name into the relief market: Dan Wheeler.  Would the Rays part with him?
  • Carroll’s sources don’t think much of the recent Jeff Kent rumor.
  • The White Sox have been aggressive in their relief pursuit; the Twins have been passive in general.  The Mets, Rays, and Phillies have been quiet.
  • Still no interest in Adam Dunn.  The man has 30 home runs!  Carroll says David Weathers is drawing some inquiries.

Odds and Ends: Happ, Igawa, Hawkins, Lowe

By Tim Dierkes | July 27, 2008 at 10:11pm CDT

Rounding up rumors and links from the weekend…

  • SI.com’s Jon Heyman says the Mariners are asking the Mets for Jon Niese for Raul Ibanez.  Not likely.
  • ESPN’s Buster Olney says the Braves would require Conor Jackson from the D’Backs in a Mark Teixeira deal, but Arizona is not biting.
  • Another quick hit from Olney: the White Sox are surveying the relief market in the wake of Scott Linebrink’s shoulder injury.
  • Several readers have written in about Phillies’ lefty J.A. Happ being pulled early from a Triple A start (2.2 scoreless innings) with no sign of injury.  Something to keep an eye on, as the Phillies hunt for a lefty reliever on the trade market.  UPDATE: Happ may be getting the call to replace Adam Eaton.
  • Even on the DL, Phil Hughes has been in high demand.
  • The White Sox let Esteban Loaiza go.
  • No team claimed Kei Igawa off waivers.  Also, the Yankees designated LaTroy Hawkins for assignment.
  • Ned Colletti on the possibility of trading Derek Lowe: "No."
  • Jim Bowden and Chad Cordero patched things up, making a re-signing possible this winter.
  • The emergence of Jeff Samardzija this weekend may make Scott Eyre or Jon Lieber expendable.
  • At least 20 teams have called about one of the Rangers’ catchers.
  • Jamey Newberg wrote a few days ago that most likely the only way Kevin Millwood can lock in his $12MM for 2010 will be to pitch 180 innings next year.

Odds And Ends: White Sox, Bonds, Mariners, Orioles, Rangers

By Cork Gaines | July 26, 2008 at 7:21pm CDT

A few more minor notes from around the MLBiverse…

  • Ken Williams says "the climate is awful" in regards to the trade market.
  • Despite reports that the Yankees were discussing the possibility of signing Barry Bonds, Brian Cashman hints that Bonds is not in the plans for the Bombers.
  • Several scouts feel that the Mariners’ interim GM is in a very tough situation. The scouts think that Seattle may be better suited to wait until the offseason to make deals, but Lee Pelekoudas may not be the GM after the season, forcing him to make an impression now.
  • Andy MacPhail says he is spending a lot of time on the phone with other teams, but he said the Orioles are not close to making any deals.
  • Ron Washington would like to see the Rangers trade for a leadoff hitter, lefty relievers and starting pitching, but knows that a potential deal is unlikely. GM Jon Daniels said that the Rangers won’t be sellers, but they are also not interested in moving their top prospects for rental players.

Cork Gaines writes for RaysIndex.com and can be reached here.

Jarrod Washburn Rumors

By Tim Dierkes | July 25, 2008 at 2:45pm CDT

3:09pm: Jayson Stark says the Yankees view Washburn as a salary dump, and won’t include even low-level prospects unless the Mariners eat money or take Igawa.

1:27pm: Peter Abraham says the Yankees are trying a new way to get Washburn.  Neither Abraham nor Geoff Baker believes Washburn’s no-trade clause will be an issue or something the Yankees would compensate for.

9:59am: SI.com’s Jon Heyman says Seattle’s request of Cabrera and Gardner for Washburn is "a non-starter for the Yankees."

FRIDAY, 9:21am: Joel Sherman says Igawa is not part of the Washburn discussions.

THURSDAY, 5:36pm: According to Ed Price of the Newark Star-Ledger, talks have progressed on a possible Washburn-Yankees trade.  Price says the Ms aren’t sold on Kei Igawa, but the Yankees are willing to discuss Melky Cabrera and Brett Gardner.

4:56pm: This is a bit out of order, since Abraham’s info below actually came out after this Seattle PI column from John Hickey.

Hickey says the Yankees, Cardinals, White Sox, and possibly Brewers have talked to the Mariners about Washburn.  The pitcher’s no-trade clause allows him to block a deal to the Yankees but not the Cards or Sox.  He seems willing to waive the clause, anyway.

11:12am: According to Peter Abraham:

One trade the Yankees could make now if they wanted would be Kei Igawa and a B-level prospect to Seattle for LHP Jarrod Washburn and DH/1B Jose Vidro. The Yankees would take on $16 million (plus a $500,000 buyout for Vidro) while shedding the $9.4 million owed to Igawa.

So for roughly $7.1 million, you get Washburn for this year and next and Vidro for this season. Washburn would likely want something to waive his no-trade clause, which includes the Yankees.

I agree with Abraham – that seems pretty reasonable.  As he says, you can just DFA Vidro.  Washburn alone is worth it, as long as the prospect isn’t anyone special and he doesn’t demand a ton for the no-trade compensation.

Heyman’s Latest: Dodgers, Braves, Fuentes, Downs

By Tim Dierkes | July 25, 2008 at 10:18am CDT

Today we have a new column from SI.com’s Jon Heyman.

  • Heyman writes of turmoil within the Dodgers’ front office. Owner Frank McCourt is meddling, and assistant GM Logan White has "unusual say-so."  Shortstop targets for the Dodgers include Jack Wilson, Orlando Cabrera, and Edgar Renteria.  However, it is unclear which young Dodgers are available.
  • Braves decision-makers remain split on whether to buy or sell, with manager Bobby Cox leading the buy side.
  • Asking prices for relievers remain high, though Heyman seems to think Brian Fuentes wouldn’t cost the Mets much more than Aaron Heilman.
  • Heyman relays a report from Joe DeMayo of NY Baseball Digest: the Mets may have interest in Toronto’s Scott Downs.
