Reds Interested In Atkins?

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 9, 2009 at 6:37pm CDT

6:34pm: John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer spoke with the Reds and says it was the Rockies that called the Reds to see if they were interested in Atkins, adding that they are not. Fay cites the $3.4MM Atkins is owed and his position as reasons the Reds are not interested. Fay does say the Reds would be willing to add salary for the "right guy." He also says the Reds could trade a relief pitcher, but that it would probably not be Nick Masset.

4:45pm: The Reds have spoken to the Rockies about Garrett Atkins, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post. The Rockies are looking for relievers, but it will be hard to match up salaries, as Atkins makes $3.4MM before the end of the season, much more than most relievers. The Rockies would likely have to cover some of Atkins' salary in a deal for a cheap reliever like Nick Masset, but could trade him for a pricier arm like David Weathers, if he's available.

The Red Sox have waning interest in the third baseman, but the Mariners and Cardinals could have interest.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Atkins, Rolen, Rios, Davis

By | July 8, 2009 at 5:29pm CDT

FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal has a fresh column up.  Let's dive in and explore some of the juicier details…

  • The Red Sox and Rockies have discussed a Garrett Atkins swap, but "both teams continue to explore other options."  It sounds like Boston may have sent the Rox a feeler, trying to gauge the third baseman's price tag.
  • Along with ace Roy Halladay, the Blue Jays are also taking offers for outfielder Alex Rios and third baseman Scott Rolen.  They both carry hefty contracts, however, so deals could be tricky.
  • The Diamondbacks are seeking first-to-second round talent for Doug Davis, "which is what they will receive if they offer him arbitration and he departs as a free agent," notes Rosenthal.  The Brewers have shown mild interest.
  • The Rockies currently consider Ryan Spilborghs, who's hitting .351 in the month of July, too valuable to trade.

Odds And Ends: Atkins, Ryan, Halladay

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 8, 2009 at 3:24pm CDT

More links for the afternoon…

  • Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that the Red Sox phoned the Rockies about Garrett Atkins, who's hitting much better since the beginning of June.
  • Bradford Doolittle of the Kansas City Star says the Royals can't give Mark Teahen away, but they should be open to trading him.
  • Joel Sherman wonders if a contender will pick B.J. Ryan up as a lefty specialist.
  • Jorge Arangure Jr. says Ryan could fit with the Marlins, who have been handing out second chances non-stop.
  • MLB.com's Lyle Spencer looks at pieces the Angels could offer for Roy Halladay, about whom they have called the Blue Jays.
  • But the Angels are not the only ones inquiring. As Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports, J.P. Ricciardi has received "several" calls about Halladay.

Rockies Sign Rex Brothers, Two More

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 7, 2009 at 3:37pm CDT

The Rockies signed three picks, including supplemental rounder Rex Brothers, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post. The Rockies, who selected Brothers 34th overall, haven't disclosed the terms of the bonus they awarded their new pitcher. It figures to be slightly less than the $900k they awarded Tim Wheeler, who they selected two picks before Brothers. Baseball America's Jim Callis reports that Brothers agreed to a $969k bonus.

They also signed second rounder Nolan Arenado and third rounder Ben Paulsen.

Odds And Ends: Bedard, Astros, Marquis

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 7, 2009 at 10:08am CDT

Links for Tuesday morning…

  • Be here at 2pm CST for this week's chat.
  • Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette profiles controversial acquisition Lastings Milledge, who seems energized and motivated.
  • It would be hard to argue with Amber Theoharis of MASN.com, who says the Orioles won the Erik Bedard deal since they acquired two All-Stars in George Sherrill and Adam Jones.
  • As MLB.com's Christian Caple reports, Bedard will be on a 60 pitch limit as he returns to the hill tonight against his former team.
  • Nomar Garciaparra told Mike McDermott of the Providence Journal that he didn't turn down $60MM from the Red Sox.
  • Experts consider the Astros' system weak, but at least they have Bud Norris and Yorman Bazardo in Triple A, as Zachary Levine of the Houston Chronicle reports.
  • The Jason Marquis deal has worked out better-than-expected for the Rockies, but, as Dave Krieger of the Denver Post notes, the Rockies have made plenty of smart deals over the years.

Odds And Ends: Kepler, Rangers, Hairston

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 6, 2009 at 2:15pm CDT

More links for the afternoon…

  • MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo reports that the Twins awarded Max Kepler a bonus of about $800k. That's close to the record for a European player.
  • Ben Klayman of Reuters reports that the Rangers are likely to make financial information available to potential buyers. Owner Tom Hicks would like to see bids for the team by mid-August, but negotiations won't necessarily be complete by the end of the season.
  • Byron Kerr of MASN.com argues that the Nyjer Morgan acquisition shows why the Nats need to award Mike Rizzo the permanent GM job.
  • Ben Badler of Baseball America reports that the Rockies signed five international players, including Dominican shortstop Rosell Herrera.
  • Dave Cameron of FanGraphs says the Scott Hairston deal was an "easy win" for the A's.
  • MLB.com's Corey Brock says the move could work for the Padres in the future.

Odds & Ends: Grabow, Yankees, Orioles

By Mike Axisa | July 4, 2009 at 8:33pm CDT

One more roundup of links for the night…

  • George. A. King III of The New York Post mentions that the Pirates had two scouts watch the Yankees earlier this week, possibly in advance of a deal involving lefty reliever John Grabow.
  • He mentions that the Dodgers and Rockies had scouts on hand as well. The Yanks have already expressed interest in Huston Street earlier this season.
  • King also says that the Yanks refuse to talk about prospects Austin Jackson and Austin Romine in trade talks according to other organizations.
  • Peter Schmuck of The Baltimore Sun recaps the first half of the Orioles' season and says they're building towards something, he's just not quite sure what. He does however praise the performance of young players like Nolan Reimold.
  • On the day of his tragic and untimely death, let's not forget that Steve McNair was quite the baseball player as well, getting selected by the Mariners in the 35th round of the 1991 Draft. (hat tip: Jesse Spector of The NY Daily News)

International Free Agent Signings: Saturday

By Mike Axisa | July 4, 2009 at 7:22pm CDT

These signings will trickle in throughout the day, so let's keep track of the notable ones in a single post. Keep checking back in for updates.

  • Baseball America's Ben Badler reports that the Padres have signed Dominican centerfielder Yoan Alcantara. ESPN's Jorge Arangure says he received a $135,000 signing bonus. Alcantara is said to be a good athlete with plus speed and a plus arm.
  • Arangure tweets that the Rockies signed Dominican shortstop Rosmel Herrera for $550,000.
  • Andrew Baggarly of The San Jose Mercury News says that the Giants signed righthander Marvin Barrios out of Panama to a six-figure bonus.
  • Badler has another:  The Rangers have signed Venezuelan shortstop Luis Sardinas.  No word on the exact financial details, but he's expected to receive a singing bonus over $1MM.
  • MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan reports that the Rangers have signed 16-yr old Jurickson Profar out of Curacao. Profar stared in the 2004 Little League World Series, and is a legitimate prospect both at short and on the mound.

Odds & Ends: Marlins, Brewers, Wang, Mitre, Matzek

By Mike Axisa | July 4, 2009 at 5:53pm CDT

Here's some links to hold you over while waiting for the sky to start lighting up…

  • Manny Navarro of The Miami Herald says the Marlins have some important decisions to make in the coming weeks, whether they plan to make a trade before the deadline or not.
  • MLB.com's Adam McCalvy mentions that the Brewers have some questions of their own to answer, including what to do with the starting rotation and how to handle Mat Gamel, who hasn't played much of late.
  • Chien-Ming Wang is headed for the DL after leaving today's game with a shoulder strain and bursitis, and Peter Abraham of The Journal News mentions that Sergio Mitre could be an option to replace him in the rotation. After rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and serving a 50-game suspension, Mitre has a 3.26 ERA and a 2.71 GB/FB ratio in 30.1 Triple-A innings this year.
  • Wang's injury basically eliminates any chance he'll be traded by the 31st as well.
  • Rockies' top pick Tyler Matzek is the first rounder most likely not to sign according to Jim Callis of Baseball America.
  • Bart Hubbuch of The New York Post tweets that reliever Connor Robertson has been demoted all the way to High-A ball. Ouch. Robertson had been designated for assignment about two weeks ago.

Odds And Ends: Dodgers, Chapman, Kepler

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 3, 2009 at 3:04pm CDT

Some more links as we count down to the big weekend…

  • Diamond Leung reports that the Dodgers traded minor-league pitcher Stephen Randolph to the Royals. Randolph, who was named in the Mitchell Report, pitched well as a starter in Triple A this month.
  • Aroldis Chapman's whereabouts remain unknown, according to ESPN.com.
  • Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post says "Clint Hurdle would not have fallen on his sword had the 'pen been mighty under his watch." Or, in less poetic terms, the Rockies have an improved bullpen.
  • Signees from the Dominican Republic will now have to take DNA tests to prove their identity before leaving the country, according to Kiley McDaniel of Baseball Prospectus.
  • As ESPN.com's Keith Law reports, the Twins have agreed to sign German catcher Max Kepler for an undisclosed amount.
