Angels Select Sammy Peralta, Designate Chad Stevens

The Angels announced that left-hander Sammy Peralta’s contract has been selected from Triple-A Salt Lake.  In corresponding moves for the 28-man and 40-man rosters, righty Chase Silseth was optioned to Triple-A, and infielder Chad Stevens was designated for assignment.

After beginning his season in the Mexican League and posting a 2.53 ERA over 21 1/3 innings with El Aguila de Veracruz, Peralta inked a minors deal with the Angels in May.  His 4.33 ERA over 70 2/3 innings with Salt Lake is pretty good for the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, plus Peralta has a solid 24.1% strikeout rate and an excellent 4.8% walk rate.

The southpaw’s control has generally been a plus over his minor league career, but he has only an 11.1% walk rate over his 35 career MLB innings, along with a 4.37 ERA and 17.9K% with the White Sox during the 2023-24 seasons.  Those two years in Chicago saw Peralta shuffled up and down from Triple-A and on and off the roster in a flurry of transactions, which even included a couple of months in the Mariners organization before he was claimed back by the Sox.

Peralta will now get his first taste of big league action in 2025, adding a fresh arm to a Los Angeles pitching staff that has been pulverized by the Athletics over the last two days.  The Angels have been outscored 27-8 in the first two games of their series with the A’s, and Silseth allowed a run in 1 2/3 of relief work in Saturday’s 17-4 rout.

Stevens made his Major League debut earlier this season, hitting .154 in 14 plate appearances during a five-game cup of coffee with Los Angeles in July.  An 11th-round pick for the Astros in the 2021 draft, Stevens’ first full Triple-A season has been a triumph, with a .291/.372/.494 slash line over 478 PA with Salt Lake this year.

Given that production, it’s a little surprising that the Angels chose Stevens as the odd man out of the 40-man roster mix.  As noted, the PCL environment is quite favorable for hitters, so Stevens’ big numbers translated to a solid but unspectacular 111 wRC+.  Stevens has primarily played shortstop in the minors but has a lot of experience at second and third base, plus a smattering of time as a first baseman and corner outfielder.  A team in need of versatility could potentially put a claim in for Stevens, who has multiple minor league option years remaining.

Angels Claim Logan Davidson

The Angels announced that they have claimed infielder Logan Davidson off waivers from the Astros. The latter club designated him for assignment earlier this week. In a corresponding 40-man move, the Angels have transferred right-hander Víctor Mederos to the 60-day injured list.

Davidson, 27, was a first-round pick of the Athletics back in 2019. He was initially one of that club’s top prospects but his stock faded. Even back in his college days, his power came with concerns about his penchant for strikeouts. Those concerns popped up again in affiliated ball. From 2021 to 2023, he stepped to the plate 1,437 times in the minors with an 11% walk rate but a 27.6% strikeout rate. He produced a combined line of .246/.332/.379 in that span, leading to a wRC+ of 85.

Going into 2024, he had largely fallen off prospect lists, but he ended up having a decent season. He still struck out in 31.1% of his Triple-A plate appearances but he managed to produce a .300/.366/.535 line and 111 wRC+ anyway. Given his ability to play every position outside of the battery, it was possible to imagine him serving as a useful utility guy.

Here in 2025, he had a strong .303/.452/.428 line in mid-May, again with a strikeout rate over 30%. The A’s then gave him his first big-league call but it didn’t last long. He hit .150/.261/.200 in his first 24 plate appearances and was quickly optioned back down to the minors. He was designated for assignment in July and was claimed by the Astros. They kept him in Triple-A but he hit .207/.290/.390 there and got the DFA treatment again.

This claim makes it three American League West clubs in a span of a few months for Davidson. For the Halos, they are about to lose Yoán Moncada, Chris Taylor and Luis Rengifo to free agency, cutting into their position player depth. They could get Anthony Rendon back next year but surely don’t want to be relying on him for anything since he has missed so much time, including all of the 2025 season due to hip surgery.

Going into 2026, they should have Zach Neto at shortstop and Nolan Schanuel at first base, but openings at second and third base. Prospect Christian Moore got a shot to take over at the keystone but just got optioned after struggling in his initial major league action. Guys like Scott Kingery, Oswald Peraza, Chad Stevens and Kyren Paris are on the roster. The Halos will likely make some offseason moves to address their infield but Davidson gives them another depth option for now. He has just a few days of service time and will still have two option years remaining after this one.

Mederos, 24, landed on the 15-day IL a little over a week ago due to shoulder inflammation. His current status is unclear but this move indicates the Halos don’t expect him back this season. He’ll be on the 60-day IL for the rest of the year, though there’s no IL in the offseason.

Angels Select Scott Kingery, Mitch Farris, Option Christian Moore

The Angels announced that they have selected the contracts of infielder Scott Kingery and left-hander Mitch Farris with rosters expanding from 26 to 28 today. Additionally, infielder/outfielder Chris Taylor has been reinstated from the 10-day injured list and infielder Christian Moore has been optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake. To open 40-man spots for Kingery and Farris, outfielder Gustavo Campero and right-hander Carson Fulmer have been transferred to the 60-day IL.

Kingery, 31, has bounced on and off the roster this year. That seems to be by design. He agreed to a $770K salary to avoid arbitration. His service time count is between three and five years, meaning he can reject outright assignments but has to forfeit his remaining salary commitments in order to exercise that right. That’s effectively given the Angels an extra infielder, as Kingery has twice been outrighted to Triple-A, then has been selected back to the roster whenever they need a fresh body.

Around the transactions, he has stepped to the plate 27 times at the big league level but with a .160/.222/.200 line. His Triple-A work has been better but still subpar. His .229/.288/.400 line down there translates to a wRC+ of 62. While he may not provide much with the bat, he does give the Angels defensive versatility, as he has experience at every position except catcher and first base.

Farris, 24, gets to the big leagues for the first time. A 14th-round pick of Atlanta in 2023, he was flipped to the Angels in December for Davis Daniel. He has spent this year in the Double-A rotation, having thrown 116 innings with a 4.27 earned run average, 28% strikeout rate, 10.8% walk rate and 44.5% ground ball rate.

The Angels recently optioned Jack Kochanowicz and then lost Tyler Anderson to the injured list due to an oblique strain. That has dropped their rotation to Yusei Kikuchi, José Soriano and Kyle Hendricks. They don’t have starters listed for Tuesday or Wednesday. It’s possible that Farris could soak up some innings, alongside someone like José Ureña, who was signed yesterday.

Moore was just drafted last year. The Angels, as is their wont, aggressively promoted him to the majors. He was up in the show in June of 2025, less than a year after being drafted. However, his first taste of the major leagues hasn’t gone as hoped. He has slashed .195/.287/.336 in his first 130 plate appearances while striking out at a 31.5% clip.

It’s not uncommon for a prospect to struggle when first called up, especially in an extreme situation such as this. Moore could still be a very important part of the club’s future but he’ll try to get back on track in the minors for now.

Campero was carted off the field with an obvious injury a couple of weeks ago and was later diagnosed with a high ankle sprain. Today’s transfer indicates the Halos don’t expect him back this season. Fulmer landed on the 15-day IL a week ago due to inflammation in his throwing elbow. His exact status isn’t clear but he’s also done for the year, based on this move.

Angels Sign Jose Ureña, Place Tyler Anderson On Injured List

The Angels announced this afternoon that they’ve signed right-hander Jose Ureña to a major league contract. He’ll take the active roster spot of left-hander Tyler Anderson, who is headed to the 15-day injured list with a left oblique strain. A timeline for Anderson’s return to action is not yet available, but Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register suggests that the injury is “likely” to end Anderson’s 2025 season.

Urena, 34 in September, has appeared in parts of 11 seasons in the majors. He began his career as a member of the Marlins and mostly pitched in a swing role to below average results, though he did manage to post a solid 3.90 ERA (100 ERA+) in 343 2/3 innings of work from 2017 to 2018. Since departing the Marlins following the shortened 2020 season, Urena has bounced around the league as a mostly below-average depth option primarily used on non-contending teams, with a 5.04 ERA (85 ERA+) and a nearly-matching 5.11 FIP across the past five seasons while suiting up for the Tigers, White Sox, Rockies, Brewers, Rangers, Mets, Blue Jays, Dodgers, and Twins.

He has looked better than that in recent years, however. Urena pitched mostly in multi-inning relief for the Rangers last year and turned in a perfectly solid 3.80 ERA despite a 4.62 FIP, with even better results when pitching out of the bullpen as opposed to starting. Urena’s work in 2025 is skewed by a single outing with the Mets where he surrendered five runs in three innings of multi-inning relief work, but his 5.00 ERA on the season drops to 4.08 when looking at his work out of the bullpen and 4.09 when looking at his work after leaving New York.

Perhaps unfortunately for Urena, it seems as though the Angels have designs on placing him in their rotation to replace Anderson. The 35-year-old lefty is a veteran of 10 MLB seasons at this point and has generally been a back-of-the-rotation arm throughout his career. He’s spent each of the past three years with the Angels, and while he pitched well enough in 2024 to be named an All-Star his 4.53 ERA and 5.02 FIP in 456 2/3 innings of work for the club have generally been lackluster. It’s been more of the same this year, with a 4.56 ERA and a 5.58 FIP in 26 starts.

Even while starting, Urena should be able to post production that rivals those mediocre numbers. Urena will be joined by Jose Soriano, Yusei Kikuchi, and Kyle Hendricks in Anaheim’s rotation, with Chase Silseth also in the mix as a long relief arm who could serve as a bulk starter in bullpen games. Outside of that group, it’s possible the Angels could look to someone like Caden Dana or Sam Bachman in the minor leagues to help fill out the rotation down the stretch, particularly if they ultimately decide to have Urena join Silseth in the bullpen.

Angels Re-Sign Connor Brogdon To Minor League Contract

The Angels re-signed reliever Connor Brogdon on a minor league deal, according to the MLB.com transaction log. Brogdon, who had elected free agency last week after being designated for assignment, reports to Triple-A Salt Lake.

Los Angeles initially signed Brogdon to a minor league contract over the offseason. He had an ERA approaching 13.00 in Triple-A when the Angels nevertheless called him up in early May. Brogdon held an MLB bullpen spot for the next three months. He allowed 5.30 earned runs per nine over 37 1/3 innings. His strikeout, walk and home run rates were each on the wrong side of league average.

Brogdon looked like a potential leverage piece for the Phillies early in his career. He combined for a 3.36 ERA with solid strikeout and walk numbers in more than 100 innings between 2021-22. His numbers have tanked in the past few years (though he did collect a World Series ring last year after pitching one inning for the Dodgers in April). Brogdon still has a mid-90s fastball, and the Angels clearly still like him as a depth option. He’ll provide non-roster bullpen depth down the stretch.

Ron Washington Recovering From Quadruple Bypass, Hopes To Manage Angels In 2026

In late June, the Angels announced that manager Ron Washington would remain on medical leave for the rest of the season. The team respected his privacy and didn’t provide any more specifics at the time. The 73-year-old skipper updated the media on his health this afternoon.

Washington revealed to the Halos beat that he underwent quadruple bypass surgery to remove blockages from his heart valves roughly two months ago (via Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com and Sam Blum of The Athletic). The situation came together quickly, as Washington revealed he first sought medical attention after noticing swelling around his ankles while the Angels were playing in the Bronx from June 16-19. Washington said the scary situation has spurred him to quit smoking and improve his diet and sleeping habits.

The baseball lifer said he expects to be fully cleared medically in December. He was unequivocal about his desire to return to managing in 2026. Washington said it’s his goal “to finish what we started” with the Angels (relayed by Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register). It stands to reason the Angels will welcome him back, but the team has not said anything his contract. Washington signed a two-year deal when he was hired going into the 2024 season. The club holds an option on his services for 2026.

Bench coach Ray Montgomery will remain the interim manager for the rest of this year. The Angels have dropped a season-high eight games below .500 entering tonight’s series in Texas. MLBTR sends our continued well wishes to Wash as he completes his recovery.

Angels Place Nolan Schanuel On 10-Day Injured List

The Angels announced this afternoon that first baseman Nolan Schanuel has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a left wrist contusion. Outfielder Matthew Lugo was recalled to replace Schanuel on the roster.

The 23-year-old Schanuel was selected 11th overall by Anaheim in the 2023 draft and made his big league debut later that same year. He was an above-average hitter from the very outset, slashing .275/.402/.330 (113 wRC+) in 29 games at the big league level during his draft year. A lack of power has limited Schanuel’s ceiling somewhat, but he’s still been a quality regular for the Angels at first base. This season, he’s slashed .266/.355/.383 (108 wRC+) with a career-low 12.3% strikeout rate, ten home runs, and five steals in six attempts. Most notably, he’s made strides at first base after starting out as a well below average glove to post average (+0 Fielding Run Value) defense at the position according some advanced metrics.

All of that is now on hold, as Schanuel is ticketed for the injured list for at least the next week. Schanuel was struck by a pitch from Phillies southpaw Ranger Suarez that at the time caused what was labelled as a left wrist contusion, the same diagnosis Schanuel is now headed to the shelf with. That was more than a month ago, so it’s not clear if this ailment is the same one that was caused by that hit by pitch. With that being said, Schanuel’s numbers have fallen off in a big way since that incident in Philadelphia. In 30 games, he’s slashed just .243/.328/.342 (90 wRC+). That’s a significant downgrade from the 113 wRC+ Schanuel posted through the end of that series against the Phillies, and since the end of that series Schanuel has been striking out more often and walking far less than 10% of the time, a major change of pace for a patient, OBP-focused hitter like him.

Whatever the cause of Schanuel’s ailing wrist, the Angels have clearly decided that it would be wise to offer the 23-year-old some time to heal. With a 61-68 record entering play today, the Angels sit 7.5 games back of an AL Wild Card spot and even further behind the AL West, so the possibility of a playoff berth is a remote consideration at best. That surely made it a relatively easy decision to prioritize Schanuel’s long-term health, and it stands to reason that the club won’t try and rush Schanuel back into the lineup before he’s completely healthy. Niko Kavadas, who made his MLB debut last year with Anaheim and is a career .184/.286/.327 (78 wRC+) hitter at the big league level, figures to handle first in Schanuel’s absence.

Replacing Schanuel on the active roster is Lugo, who made his MLB debut earlier this year and has played primarily center field after spending time both in the outfield and on the infield during his time in the minors. A second-round pick by the Red Sox back in 2019, Lugo came to Anaheim as part of a trade last summer. He’s done well in a limited look at the MLB level, with a .238/.256/.548 (115 wRC+) slash line in 17 games. That solid performance is mostly carried by his three homers, but he’s still looked like a viable complementary piece for the Angels’ outfield mix. Lugo could vie for playing time in center field, which is currently occupied by Bryce Teodosio. Jo Adell and Taylor Ward have locked down the outfield corners and seem all but certain to remain everyday players down the stretch, barring an injury.

Angels Place Victor Mederos, Carson Fulmer On 15-Day IL

The Angels announced that right-handers Victor Mederos and Carson Fulmer have been placed on the 15-day injured list.  Fulmer is dealing with inflammation in his throwing elbow, while Mederos has right shoulder inflammation.  Righty Chase Silseth was called up from Triple-A to take one roster spot, and right-hander Jose Soriano was activated from the team’s restricted list in the other corresponding move.  (Soriano was already on the paternity list and was moved to the restricted list for an additional day off.)

Both Mederos and Fulmer were roughed up during yesterday’s 12-1 loss to the Cubs, as each pitcher was charged with six earned runs.  Mederos started the game and allowed four hits and two walks in his four-inning outing, plus his fastball lost four miles of velocity from his first inning to his last.

Beyond the damage on the scoresheet, Mederos said he felt some shoulder fatigue after the game, and the result is today’s IL placement.  Mederos told Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register that he’ll be underdoing an MRI to determine the extent of the problem.

Now in his third MLB season, Mederos has yet to find much consistency, as he has an 8.53 ERA in 25 1/3 innings and 12 appearances (all with the Angels).  His last three outings have been his first three big league starts, as the Halos gave him a look as a starter after posting some solid numbers with Triple-A Salt Lake.  Somewhat curiously, Mederos has struggled in the majors and at the lower minor league levels but he has a 3.43 ERA in 97 career innings in Salt Lake, even pitching within the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League.

The MRI results will determine Mederos’ immediate fate, yet even if the scans come back clean, the timing of the IL placement could mean that Mederos’ 2025 season is over.  Any lingering shoulder soreness might lead the Angels to simply shut Mederos down, and the same is true of Fulmer and his elbow issue.

Fulmer had a 3.06 ERA in his first 17 2/3 innings for Los Angeles this season, but things have gone south in the form of a 10.03 ERA over Fulmer’s last 11 2/3 frames.  That tough stretch includes a nightmarish performance yesterday, as Fulmer gave up six runs on seven hits and a walk in just 1 1/3 IP against the Cubs.  Fulmer said his elbow started bothering him during the appearance, and he’ll undergo testing today.

Beginning the season on a minor league deal with the Pirates, Fulmer was cut loose in June and rejoined the Angels on a minors contract, with a selection to the active roster coming in July.  All of Fulmer’s MLB time in the last three seasons has come in a Halos uniform, with a 4.43 ERA to show for his 126 career innings in Anaheim.

Angels Activate Robert Stephenson

The Angels announced they’ve reinstated reliever Robert Stephenson from the 60-day injured list. They optioned righty Chase Silseth in a corresponding move. Los Angeles already had a couple openings on the 40-man roster after recently designating Connor Brogdon and Shaun Anderson for assignment.

Stephenson returns after losing almost three months to a biceps injury. He’d missed all of last season rehabbing elbow surgery. That carried over into late May this year. Stephenson has spent a total of three days on the Angels’ active roster. He tossed a perfect inning with two strikeouts in his team debut on May 28. Two days later, the biceps injury knocked him out of action before he finished an at-bat.

The Halos signed Stephenson to a three-year, $33MM free agent deal going into 2024. While the elbow injury wiped out the entire first season, it triggered a conditional $2.5MM club option for 2027. Stephenson was dominant down the stretch two seasons back, striking out 43% of opponents with a 2.35 ERA in 42 appearances for the Rays. His arm hasn’t given him a chance to repeat that performance.

The Halos have dropped five games under .500 and are very likely going to miss the playoffs. They’ll hope Stephenson looks like his old self in the final five weeks of the regular season. That’d at least allow them to pencil him in as a high-leverage arm as they construct their 2026 bullpen.

Kenley Jansen is an impending free agent. Ben Joyce will be working back from shoulder surgery. Reid Detmers is a quality reliever but might get a chance to compete for a rotation spot next spring. Ryan Zeferjahn has strikeout stuff with wildly inconsistent command. Stephenson and Brock Burke may be the only locks for next year’s season-opening bullpen right now, and that’s obviously conditional on the former staying healthy after two injury-wrecked years.

Connor Brogdon Elects Free Agency

Right-hander Connor Brogdon has elected free agency, according to his transactions tracker at MLB.com. The Angels had outrighted him to Triple-A earlier this week but he has exercised his right to reject that assignment. Players have the right to elect free agency in lieu of accepting an outright assignment if they have either three years of service time or a previous career outright. Brogdon qualifies on both counts.

Brogdon, 30, signed a minor league deal with the Halos in the offseason. He was called up to the big league club in early May. He gave the Angels 37 1/3 innings with a 5.30 earned run average. His 20.9% strikeout rate and 10.1% walk rate were both a bit worse than average. He eventually wore out his welcome with the Angels. Since he’s out of options, he had to be bumped off the 40-man completely. The 29 other clubs passed on the chance to grab him off waivers.

He’ll now see what opportunities are out there for him. The fact that he cleared waivers suggests that he’ll be limited to minor league offers. It’s possible some club out there sees a bit of upside. Brogdon had much better results a few years back. He tossed 113 innings for the Phillies over the 2020-22 seasons with a 3.42 ERA, 25.1% strikeout rate and 7.3% walk rate.

Things trended in the wrong direction from there. His ERA climbed a bit to 4.03 in 2023, while his strikeout and walk rates went in the wrong direction to 20.5% and 10.2% respectively. 2024 was mostly a lost season due to injuries. The Phils designated him for assignment early in the year. The Dodgers claimed him but plantar fasciitis limited him to just three big league innings.

This year’s results don’t qualify as a bounceback, but at least the stuff has improved. Brogdon averaged between 95 and 96 miles per hour on his fastball during those 2020-22 seasons. That dropped to 94.7 mph in 2023 and just 92.8 mph in last year’s tiny sample of work. He has got that back up to 95.5 mph so far in 2025. His cutter and changeup have similarly bounced back after recent drops.

Given his past success and recent uptick in velo, he should at least get some interest. All clubs need depth arms, given the rate of injuries in the modern era. If he signs somewhere before September 1st, he’ll be playoff eligible with that club, even if it’s just a minor league deal. He has just over four years of service, so he could also be retained beyond this year via arbitration if he’s on a 40-man roster at season’s end.
