Rosenthal’s Latest: Teixeira, Yankees, Padres, Fish

By Nat Boyle | July 6, 2008 at 10:04am CDT

And now, the latest from Ken Rosenthal’s Full Count video:
  • If the Braves decide to shop Mark Teixeira, they may have a tough time getting as much as they’d like. The Red Sox, Angels, and Diamondbacks – among other contenders – are set at 1B/DH with David Ortiz, Casey Kotchman, and Conor Jackson respectively. Rosenthal notes Boston will only pursue Teixeira if Ortiz’s wrist fails to heal.
  • Brian Cashman isn’t sure whether the Yankees are buyers or sellers.  Most of their high paid players have no-trade clauses.  Should they want to buy, Rosenthal suggests A.J. Burnett is a guy they could make a play for: an underperformer with a contract the Blue Jays would be happy to pass off.
  • The Padres are planning to hold onto Brian Giles with the anticipation that a better replacement will not be available this winter. They continue to shop Randy Wolf, who can veto up to 14 clubs, and Greg Maddux to the Cubs continues to be bandied about.
  • The Marlins need help in the bullpen, at catcher, and particularly centerfield. They could pursue Willy Taveras, Scott Podsednik, or potentially free agent Kenny Lofton, 41, who has generated interest but not signed anywhere.

Pettitte To Pitch In ’09?

By Tim Dierkes | July 3, 2008 at 4:57pm CDT

From Buster Olney’s blog today:

Heard this: Andy Pettitte may well pitch another season, in 2009.

Pettitte, 36, has a 3.98 ERA in 17 starts for the Yankees this year.  He’s well-compensated at $16MM.  About a month ago, Pettitte said it would be "a joy and an honor" to pitch at the new Yankee Stadium.

Stark’s Latest: Harang, Bedard, Hardy, Weeks, McLouth

By Tim Dierkes | July 3, 2008 at 4:30pm CDT

Brand new column from ESPN’s Jayson Stark.

  • Stark explains why he feels the trade deadline is overrated.  I guess it all depends on what you expect from it.
  • You may recall Walt Jocketty’s Reds untouchables list from a few weeks ago.  It did not include Aaron Harang.  While the Reds might listen on Harang, there wouldn’t be any kind of discount.
  • The Mariners have pushed Erik Bedard to the backburner, focusing on shopping other veterans.  They’re also not dying to move Raul Ibanez at the moment.
  • The Brewers might be willing to include J.J. Hardy or Rickie Weeks in a trade.  In our chat today, a commenter wondered whether some kind of Hardy-A.J. Burnett swap could work.
  • The Tigers are looking ahead, inquiring about various shortstops they might be able to use in ’09 and beyond.  Perhaps if they find one they’ll decline Edgar Renteria’s option.
  • Add the Marlins to the list of Brian Fuentes suitors.  One source from another team said the cost for Fuentes is "one good piece."
  • Stark agrees with recent indications that the Royals aren’t dying to move Ron Mahay.  Nonetheless, the Yankees, Marlins, Phillies, and Tigers are named as interested parties.
  • Pirate outfield chatter: some teams are calling on Nate McLouth, though the Bucs prefer to move Jason Bay or Xavier Nady.  Despite earlier reports, Stark says the Bucs could consider trading both.  The Rays are "especially interested" in Bay.
  • Stark talked to one club official who hasn’t heard any indications that the Phillies are willing to trade Shane Victorino.  Also possibly off-limits: Double A catcher Lou Marson.
  • To acquire Rich Harden, a package "would have to at least approach last year’s Dan Haren extravaganza."  So, look for him to stay put.  Harden’s velocity was down yesterday, by the way.
  • Brett Myers’ future with the Phillies could hinge on whether they re-sign closer Brad Lidge.
  • Still no buzz around Adam Dunn.
  • C.C. chatter: don’t write off the Indians’ attempt to sign him to an extension.  "One friend" sees Sabathia as more likely to land on the West Coast than the east if he doesn’t re-sign.

Selling Off The Mariners

By Joe Pawlikowski | July 2, 2008 at 2:58pm CDT

So it’s been a bit Mariners heavy today at MLBTR. It makes sense, though. They currently own the worst record in baseball, yet have some chips that could be valuable to contending teams. Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times takes a look at a few teams that might be interested in buying what the M’s are selling.

  • Jason Varitek is hitting poorly. Kevin Cash is doing worse. Could the Sox pick up one of the M’s catchers? Baker notes that Jamie Burke could catch Tim Wakefield and probably hit better than Cash. Or, what about Kenji Johjima? Baker mentions that he could take over for Varitek, who will be a free agent, next year. Problem is, Johjima is hitting even worse this year.
  • With Hideki Matsui’s knee barking, could the Yanks be interested in Raul Ibanez? I think they’d opt to bring in Barry Bonds if Matsui’s knee doesn’t heal up soon. Not mentioned by Baker, but speculated by yours truly, the Yanks might show some interest in Richie Sexson as a defensive backup first baseman.
  • Plenty of teams need relievers, and the Mariners have a few. Baker names Mark Lowe, Sean Green, and Arthur Rhodes as available parties. Just about any team in contention might be interested, though Baker names the Braves and the Rays.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Padilla, Manny, Beltre, Dunn

By Tim Dierkes | July 1, 2008 at 2:07pm CDT

Rumor man Ken Rosenthal has a new column up.

  • At least three teams have inquired on the Rangers’ Vicente Padilla: the Mets, Yankees, and Brewers.  Jon Daniels is looking for "quality young pitching."
  • Manny Ramirez’s $20MM option for ’09 isn’t a lock.  It’s a tough call – .900 OPS players on one-year deals don’t grow on trees.
  • Rosenthal suggests David DeJesus or Melky Cabrera would be nice fits for the Diamondbacks, who aren’t looking for a rental.  He also speculates on names like Brian Giles, David Dellucci, and Randy Winn.  Note: Rosenthal is playing GM here, not relaying inside info of trade talks.
  • Rosenthal believes Matt Stairs would be a nice addition for the Dodgers, and notes that the Dodgers and Blue Jays have spoken.  The Jays’ direction for ’08 is still uncertain though.
  • Still sounds like it’d take a "knockout offer" to pry Rich Harden loose from the A’s.
  • The A’s are said to like Mariners third baseman Adrian Beltre.  He can block trades to eight unknown clubs though.
  • Adam Dunn isn’t generating much trade interest yet.
  • KC’s Ron Mahay is "drawing significant interest."  The trade market for lefty relievers is fairly robust.

GM Trade History: Brian Cashman

By Tim Dierkes | July 1, 2008 at 11:24am CDT

Next up in our GM Trade History series, the Yankees’ Brian Cashman.  Cash’s current contract with the Yanks runs through this season.

Many thanks to Brendan Bianowicz for putting together Cashman’s history, which can be downloaded as an Excel spreadsheet here.  Please let us know in the comments if you find any errors or omissions.

Commenters have mentioned that this info would be better as a searchable webpage, and I agree.  We’ll look into that after Brendan has finished all the GMs.

Latest C.C. Sabathia Rumors

By Tim Dierkes | July 1, 2008 at 10:35am CDT

We’ve entered trade deadline month, with Indians ace C.C. Sabathia front row and center.  Let’s discuss.

  • Ken Davidoff has a nice summary of the situation, agreeing with Buster Olney’s suggestion that the Brewers have the best mix of means and motivation to acquire Sabathia.  Olney’s handicap yesterday ranked the Rays, Red Sox, Dodgers, and Cubs behind the Brewers (in that order).
  • Brewers GM Doug Melvin calls the speculation "just the same old rumors."  Still, Melvin would consider moving prospects for a rental and notes that his stacked Double A club has been popular with other clubs.
  • Yankees GM Brian Cashman does not sound like someone who plans to go all-in to get Sabathia.  Gammons says they’ve "lurked."
  • On the topic of the Cubs, ESPN’s Peter Gammons writes, "They doubt they have enough to get Sabathia, although Hendry constantly touches base with Indians GM Mark Shapiro."  Regardless, Gammons expects the Indians to move quickly on Sabathia.
  • Gammons says the Rangers are out but the Phillies "shouldn’t be overlooked."  The Rays?  They’ve lurked.

Odds and Ends: Meche, Horne, Manny, Uggla

By Tim Dierkes | June 30, 2008 at 1:29pm CDT

Today’s random hot stove links…

  • Gil Meche wants to stay with the Royals.
  • Yankees pitching prospect Alan Horne may be injured.  This could have hot stove ramifications – Horne could’ve been a top trade chip or even a rotation addition this year.
  • Peter Abraham does not think Barry Bonds makes sense for the Yankees.  Hideki Matsui will be out at least a couple of weeks with a knee injury, with surgery as a last resort.
  • Manny Ramirez shoved the Red Sox’s traveling secretary.  This is slightly different than the Shawn Chacon situation, in that Chacon had his hands around Ed Wade’s neck.  But is Manny getting off easy because he’s Manny?
  • CBS’s Scott Miller weighs in on the starting pitching market.
  • Dan Uggla is in line for at least a tenfold raise in arbitration next year.  The Marlins haven’t decided whether to talk extension with him.

Odds and Ends: White Sox, Mackowiak, Garcia, Rays

By Tim Dierkes | June 29, 2008 at 2:50pm CDT

A gathering of Sunday afternoon links…

  • From the What Might’ve Been File – Phil Rogers reminds us that the White Sox offered more than the Cubs did for Kosuke Fukudome.
  • The White Sox seem content with the current roster.
  • River Ave. Blues doesn’t expect Brian Cashman and the Yankees to pursue an impact player at the trade deadline.
  • The Reds signed Rob Mackowiak to a minor league deal.
  • Free agent Freddy Garcia is looking to sign before the trade deadline.  Garcia says he feels like he has a new shoulder.
  • For the first time in their history, the Rays will consider trading for rentals.

Odds And Ends: Brewers, White Sox, Astros, Harden

By Cork Gaines | June 28, 2008 at 11:02am CDT

A few minor notes from around the MLBiverse…

  • Jon Heyman came up with a list of 19 pitchers that could be made available prior to the trade deadline. He also presents a list of 12 candidates that the Mariners may consider for their vacant GM position.
  • The Brewers’ assistant GM indicated the team would like to add a starting pitcher to give the pitching staff more depth.
  • Ken Williams says that he is happy with the White Sox’ roster and has not assigned scouts to specific players on other teams that could be available.
  • Richard Justice says that the Astros will not ship off veterans before the trade deadline, but also notes that they might not be able to even if they wanted to be active sellers.
  • Rich Harden struck out 11 in eight shutout innings in front of a number of scouts two nights ago.  Also at this link, Joe Blanton and Chad Gaudin have heard trade rumors about themselves.  Gaudin is "convinced that he’s going to be traded."
  • Derek Jeter vouched for Shawn Chacon’s character.

Cork Gaines writes for RaysIndex and can be reached here.  Tim Dierkes also contributed to this post.
