Stark’s Latest: Aurilia, Fuentes, Orlando Cabrera

By Tim Dierkes | July 30, 2008 at 2:18pm CDT

New collection of rumors from ESPN’s Jayson Stark…

  • The Twins have asked the Giants about Rich Aurilia.  They’ve been dangling Boof Bonser for a position player; would they trade him back to San Francisco for Aurilia?
  • On the Phillies’ radar: John Grabow, Will Ohman, Arthur Rhodes, and Jack Taschner.
  • A Brian Fuentes trade remains doubtful.
  • The White Sox will trade Orlando Cabrera for the right pitcher.  The Sox aren’t generating much interest in their prospects.

Rays Scouting Jayson Werth

By Tim Dierkes | July 30, 2008 at 10:49am CDT

Mike Tingle of ESPN 840 in Charlottesville spoke to Rays scout Mike Cubbage yesterday.  Cubbage said that he plans to scout Phillies outfielder Jayson Werth, and that Werth may be available in the right deal.  Werth, 29, is hitting .272/.358/.485 in 268 plate appearances (most of the damage done against lefties).

Additionally, the Rays offered a package of players for Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte but the Bucs chose the Yankees’ offer.  The Rays also looked at Jon Rauch previously, though he was not at the top of their list.  And of course, the Rays would like to acquire Brian Fuentes.

Maddux Won’t Go To Philly

By Tim Dierkes | July 30, 2008 at 10:22am CDT

According to Scott Miller of CBSSports.com, the Phillies had the Padres ask Greg Maddux if he would accept a trade there.  Maddux told Padres GM Kevin Towers he would not.  Towers continues to be limited to the West Coast as he tries to move Maddux’s remaining $3.3MM salary.

Tom Krasovic says the Dodgers are the one plausible option, and they’re not interested at this time.  They should probably look into it though.  The Giants could be buyers, but only with an eye on ’09.

Phillies Interested In Mahay

By Tim Dierkes | July 29, 2008 at 2:40pm CDT

2:40pm: Todd Zolecki spoke to a source who says there’s no proposal on the table from the Phillies for Mahay.

12:56pm: Stark is now saying the Phillies are not close on Mahay.

12:47pm: Ken Rosenthal says the Phils are not the frontrunner for Mahay.  Other teams may be willing to give up more.  The Red Sox are known to have Mahay in their sights.

12:01pm: According to ESPN’s Jayson Stark, the Phillies have been having extensive conversations with the Royals about lefty Ron Mahay.  The Royals would receive 23 year-old Double A shortstop prospect Jason Donald in return.

Mahay has been quite popular on the trade market.  The Phillies are able to fill a need for the Royals with Donald.

Odds and Ends: Rhodes, Happ, Manny

By Tim Dierkes | July 29, 2008 at 2:06pm CDT

Let’s round up some links and rumors.

  • The Brewers scouted Arthur Rhodes last night, according to Jon Heyman.
  • About a "half-dozen" Braves are subject of trade talks, according to GM Frank Wren.
  • Baseball Prospectus’ Kevin Goldstein notes that Brandon Wood’s stock is rising in case the Angels want to use him as a trade chip.
  • Phillies prospect J.A. Happ wasn’t necessarily pulled from his start last weekend because of a big league promotion.  Phillies assistant GM Mike Arbuckle admitted that a trade is another option.  [UPDATE: Happ has indeed been recalled to the Majors, though.]
  • Tom Verducci of SI.com believes the proper business decision for the Red Sox will be to keep Manny Ramirez and exercise his $20MM option for ’09.
  • Richard Durrett of the Dallas Morning News says the D’Backs, Rays, and Tigers had scouts at last night’s Rangers-Mariners contest.

Molony’s Latest: Ohman, Fuentes, Sherrill, Tejada

By Tim Dierkes | July 29, 2008 at 1:15pm CDT

Here’s a new column from MLB.com’s Jim Molony.

  • Will Ohman suitors: the Marlins, Red Sox, Rays, Tigers and White Sox.  Molony says the Braves aren’t highly motivated to trade Ohman, as they might want to re-sign him for ’09.  Odd.
  • The Rockies would need to be bowled over, but the Cardinals, Mets, Phillies, Rays, Red Sox, White Sox and Yankees still like Brian Fuentes.
  • George Sherrill suitors: Cardinals, Dodgers, Marlins, Phillies, Red Sox and Tigers.  He’s another reliever unlikely to be dealt.
  • Molony disagrees with other reports on the Red Sox and Miguel Tejada; he says they did inquire but were rebuffed.

Pirates Rumors: Grabow, Bay, Wilson

By Tim Dierkes | July 29, 2008 at 9:36am CDT

Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has the latest Pirates buzz.

  • Lefty John Grabow is drawing interest from the Rays, Cardinals, Phillies, Red Sox, and Angels.  Grabow gave up a couple of homers in his last outing; he missed time earlier this month with arm fatigue.  The 29 year-old southpaw is under team control through ’09.
  • Calls are still coming in on Jason Bay and Jack Wilson, though the Rays are backing off on Bay.  Kovacevic says the Red Sox might provide competition for the Dodgers in the Wilson sweepstakes.  The Bucs interestingly called up shortstop Brian Bixler when Adam LaRoche hit the DL, but that simply may be to cover for an ailing Freddy Sanchez at second base.
  • Nothing to yesterday’s MLB.com report of Pirates’ ownership nixing a Bay-to-Atlanta deal.

Carroll’s Latest: Torrealba, Wheeler, Dunn

By Tim Dierkes | July 28, 2008 at 10:56pm CDT

Here’s the latest from Will Carroll at Baseball Prospectus.  Some of this info is from this afternoon, so I apologize for the tardiness.

  • The Rockies may still move a lesser player like Yorvit Torrealba, if anyone’s interested.  There doesn’t seem to be a match with the catching-hungry Marlins though.
  • Carroll tosses a new name into the relief market: Dan Wheeler.  Would the Rays part with him?
  • Carroll’s sources don’t think much of the recent Jeff Kent rumor.
  • The White Sox have been aggressive in their relief pursuit; the Twins have been passive in general.  The Mets, Rays, and Phillies have been quiet.
  • Still no interest in Adam Dunn.  The man has 30 home runs!  Carroll says David Weathers is drawing some inquiries.

Manny Ramirez Rumors: Monday

By Tim Dierkes | July 28, 2008 at 9:37pm CDT

9:35pm: The D’Backs are considered "highly unlikely" to acquire Ramirez.  So now we have denials from all four teams named this morning.

9:08pm: The Dodgers would only be interested in Ramirez if the Red Sox took Andruw Jones back.

8:42pm: Peter Gammons has some unkind words for Manny.

6:46pm: Cross the Mets off the list too, according to Jayson Stark.

3:06pm: GM Pat Gillick says the Phillies have no interest in Ramirez.  He makes the fairly obvious point that the Phils don’t have an open position for Manny.

9:26am: Click here for a refresher on yesterday’s Manny Ramirez rumors.  He said he would approve a trade, if the Red Sox can find one.  Todd Zolecki noted that the Phillies have discussed Manny internally.

  • Dan Graziano and Ed Price of the Newark Star-Ledger talked to an official who says the Mets and Phillies are both in "serious pursuit" of Ramirez.  If so, why do both teams have no interest in Adam Dunn?  Graziano and Price think Ramirez would command big-name prospects like Fernando Martinez or Lou Marson.
  • Sean McAdam says the Sox have spoken to four teams about Manny: the Phillies, Mets, Diamondbacks, and Dodgers.  McAdam says Ramirez will waive his no-trade clause for a guarantee that his options will be declined.  Additionally, the Red Sox might consider kicking in money to get better players in return.
  • Ken Davidoff of Newsday says the Mets aren’t interested in Ramirez and continue to eye Raul Ibanez. However, the asking price may be too high.
  • Paul Hagen finds no indication that the Phillies are interested.  And unless Pat Burrell is included in a deal, he or Ramirez would have to play right field.  Umm…no.
  • Jeff Passan thinks that all things considered, Manny still might be worth keeping in Boston for $20MM in ’09.

Stark’s Latest: Eyre, Sherrill

By Tim Dierkes | July 28, 2008 at 6:55pm CDT

ESPN’s Jayson Stark has been burning up the phone lines today.  New blog posts can be found here and here.

  • Brian Fuentes and Damaso Marte are off the market, but lefty relievers remain plentiful.  The Cubs would like to move Scott Eyre, perhaps to an AL club like the Rays, Red Sox, or Tigers.  Eyre is in the last year of a three-year contract and can block trades to ten clubs.
  • The Orioles would like to pry a young shortstop loose if they are to trade George Sherrill.  Erick Aybar, Maicer Izturis, and Jason Donald are names of interest, but the Angels and Phillies aren’t biting.
