Mets, Phillies, Dodgers Interested In Ibanez

According to Ken Davidoff of Newsday, the Mets, Phillies, and Dodgers have expressed interest in free agent outfielder Raul Ibanez. Ibanez would replace Pat Burrell in Philly, and is a backup plan for the Dodgers if they fail to sign Manny Ramirez. The Cubs and Royals may also get involved, but both clubs face payroll limitations currently.

Interest from four NL clubs means Ibanez could remain an outfielder for his age 37-39 seasons, a dicey proposition. He allowed 18 more bases than the average left fielder in 2008, according to the plus/minus system. Ibanez hit .293/.358/.479 in 707 plate appearances, earning just $5.5MM in the last year of his contract. He should be able to double his salary in ’09.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Griffey, Peavy, Dempster

A look at the latest column from FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal:

Rosenthal wonders if Jason Varitek’s viral sickness and divorce last year contributed to his poor performance at the plate.
Ken Griffey Jr.’s wife gave him her blessing to play anywhere he’d like. If he’s focused on getting a ring, Seattle might not make sense. Griffey’s doctor believes his knee will be in better shape in 2009.
Padres GM Kevin Towers wonders if Jake Peavy would’ve accepted a trade to the Braves, given Atlanta’s club policy against no-trade clauses. Towers isn’t talking to the Braves, Dodgers, or Yankees about Peavy, and Rosenthal says he’s "not making much headway" with the Cubs. ESPN’s Peter Gammons says the Cubs’ loss of Jose Ceda lessens their chances, while Frank Wren still believes Peavy will end up a Brave.
The Cubs hope to resolve the Ryan Dempster situation this week. The team wants to do a four-year deal.
The Giants are still in on Juan Cruz after their Jeremy Affeldt signing.
The Phillies gave Pat Burrell "parameters" for a new deal, while Rosenthal speculates on the Giants and Dodgers as other possible fits.

The Yankees hope Mike Mussina decides whether he’s retiring soon. He says it might be this week.

Roch Kubatko had the scoop yesterday – Scott Proefrock, formerly of the Orioles, is the new assistant GM for the Phillies.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Peavy, Teixeira, Burnett

Ken Rosenthal’s got an interesting new column up.

Now that talks with the Braves have ended for the time being, Padres GM Kevin Towers is talking with the Yankees about Jake Peavy. The Yankees have had “numerous discussions” with the Padres, even though they just offered C.C. Sabathia a contract and are still considering A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe.
Peavy’s agent Barry Axelrod said that “the Angels probably would be more appealing” geographically, but “from other perspectives, they might be less appealing” than other teams
Rosenthal talked with an agent who said that the Angels could wait a week or 10 days before making Mark Teixeira a “knockout offer” with a deadline.
Even though the Yankees traded for Nick Swisher, they could still have interest in Teixeira if he’s willing to consider a shorter contract of four or five years for top dollar.
Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi knows that Toronto “won’t be the highest bidder” for A.J. Burnett. Ricciardi hopes that Burnett likes Toronto enough to re-sign.
The Indians are considering going after both Juan Cruz and Jeremy Affeldt instead of an experienced closer.
The Phillies and Giants could also bid on Cruz.
The Cardinals will have interest in Affeldt and Joe Beimel as they try to strengthen their bullpen.

Stark’s Latest: Abreu, Arroyo, Hudson

ESPN’s Jayson Stark is back with a look at needs and plans for all 30 teams. I highly recommend you read the article, but here are a few highlights. He’s also got a fresh blog post here.

The Phillies are eyeing Doug Brocail and Russ Springer.
The Mets like Bobby Abreu, but not his three year, $45MM asking price.
The Reds are quietly listening on Bronson Arroyo, and the Rangers may be interested.
Contrary to previous reports, Stark believes the Mets’ first order of business is getting a starting pitcher.
Here’s a new one – the Marlins are interested in Orlando Hudson?
The Astros may be trying to move money, and Stark implies trading Miguel Tejada or Jose Valverde could be one path.
The Rockies have "actively explored" signing Jeremy Affeldt, who could also wind up back home with the Mariners. A few more interesting names for Seattle: Joe Crede (if Adrian Beltre is traded), Jason Giambi, and Ken Griffey Jr.

Phillies Rumors: Holliday, Moyer, Burrell

5:34pm: Mandel talked to a team source who says the Phillies were never close to a deal for Matt Holliday. Talks at the GM meetings were brief.

3:25pm: According to MLB.com’s Ken Mandel, Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. is now focused on re-signing lefty starter Jamie Moyer. Mandel gives a 50-50 chance Moyer signs before Friday. Moyer turns 46 soon, but he’s not showing any signs of slowing down. He wants a multiyear deal after earning $7MM this season.

Mandel adds that the Phillies have expressed interest in re-signing Pat Burrell, but he’ll likely have a chance to test the open market.

Rockies Talking Trade With Reds

8:50pm: Reds GM Walt Jocketty says nothing is close with the Rockies; he’s talked to a lot of clubs. His snide remark: "They all didn’t allow it to get out."

Jocketty talked to the Rockies about Matt Holliday, but it was a short discussion.

7:37pm: Tracy Ringolsby of the Rocky Mountain News says the Reds have definite interest in Atkins, but not Torrealba or Taveras. The Reds like the idea of adding Atkins’ righthanded bat. They don’t like Torrealba’s price and Taveras’ inability to get on base. Ringolsby says the Phillies, Angels, and Twins are also after Atkins.

3:28pm: Troy Renck confirms Rosenthal’s report, and also speaks of speculation that the Red Sox will make a run at Chris Iannetta. A long shot to be sure.

Other Rockies notes: Renck says the Rox told people close to Manny Corpas that he’s still the closer, meaning Street might be on the outs. Additionally, the Rockies have expressed interest in Carl Pavano.

1:17pm: Ken Rosenthal says the Rockies aren’t done dealing – they’re talking trade with the Reds and other clubs. The Reds like Willy Taveras, Yorvit Torrealba, and Garrett Atkins, with a "definite interest" in Taveras.

Meanwhile the Indians like newly acquired Huston Street and the Nationals are one club eyeing Carlos Gonzalez. Rosenthal says the Rockies figure to hang on to Greg Smith.

It seems we can’t yet judge the Holliday trade for the Rockies. It did seem odd that they would acquire a closer and a young center fielder, two positions at which they already had solid options.

Phillies Sign Scott Eyre

According to Scott Lauber of The News Journal, the Phillies signed reliever Scott Eyre to a one-year deal worth $2MM plus bonuses. Eyre, 36, posted a 4.21 ERA in 25.2 innings with the Cubs and Phillies this year. He was much better in his 14.1 innings with the Phils. He dealt with elbow and groin injuries during his time with the Cubs.

Even after signing LaTroy Hawkins, the Astros would like to re-sign Doug Brocail. They already chose a $250K buyout over his $3.25MM option. Further complicating matters, Brocail is a Type A free agent.
The Royals signed pitcher Brandon Duckworth and then outrighted him to Triple A.
Yahoo’s Jeff Passan ranks all the free agents, from C.C. Sabathia at #1 to Vance Wilson at #183.
The Giants seem likely to hit the free agent market for a reliever.
Pat Burrell hasn’t heard from the Phillies yet.
John Brattain battles Scott Boras on his Manny Ramirez claims.
Aaron Gleeman suggests the Twins would be better off platooning Brian Buscher and Brendan Harris at third base than acquiring Garrett Atkins.
