Holliday To Cards Dead

By Tim Dierkes | November 10, 2008 at 8:28am CDT

MONDAY: Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch also checked in with Mozeliak, who said, "That one’s not happening – at all" in reference to a Cards-Holliday trade.  The Cardinals balked at the required player package.  Mozeliak was irritated that (inaccurate) details of the talks leaked to the press.  The Cards are looking at other things now, though Strauss’s source believes Holliday talks could be resurrected.

SUNDAY: Tracy Ringolsby of the Rocky Mountain News talked to Cardinals GM John Mozeliak, who admitted the idea of a Matt Holliday trade is dead.  The Rockies sought Ryan Ludwick, Skip Schumaker, and Mitchell Boggs from the Cards, and talks hit a wall.

The A’s may still be in play, while Ringolsby says the Phillies did not discuss Holliday with the Rox during the GM meetings.  The Phils are unwilling to part with Shane Victorino.  Ringolsby adds that the Red Sox, Rays, and Yankees have expressed interest in Holliday.  Joe Strauss recently said the Mets are in pursuit, and Bill Ladson had him as a Nationals target.

Phils Won’t Listen On Rollins

By Tim Dierkes | November 10, 2008 at 8:16am CDT

On Thursday, Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News spoke of "rumors that Philadelphia will listen to offers" for Jimmy Rollins.  Todd Zolecki of the Philadelphia Inquirer ran this one by Phils GM Ruben Amaro Jr.  Amaro called the rumor "ludicrous" and "unequivocally false."  So, cross Rollins off your wishlist.

Odds And Ends: Saltalamacchia, White Sox, Ludwick

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | November 9, 2008 at 10:27am CDT

Links for Sunday…

  • Jarrod Saltalamacchia says playing with Jason Varitek for the Red Sox would be a "dream come true."
  • Ken Davidoff writes that the White Sox would like to trade Jermaine Dye, Paul Konerko or Jim Thome.
  • Bernie Miklasz asks whether the Cardinals believe in Ryan Ludwick.
  • According to the Chicago Tribune, 19-year-old Cuban prospect Dayan Viciedo has raw tools and questionable commitment. Yesterday, the Chicago Sun-Times suggested the Sox were interested.
  • Mike Jacobs doesn’t expect to walk more than he did last year.
  • Tim Cowlishaw thinks the Rangers should try to sign Manny Ramirez.
  • Phil Rogers says that the Cubs could sign Ryan Dempster by Thursday. Rogers doesn’t expect Manny Ramirez or C.C. Sabathia to sign soon.

Odds and Ends: Tazawa, Young, Kouzmanoff

By Tim Dierkes | November 7, 2008 at 4:00pm CDT

Links for Friday.  As always, I’ll update this post with more stuff so refresh later if you’re interested.

  • Nick Piecoro suggests catcher Miguel Montero could be the D’Backs’ best trade chip.  Their needs will be second base and perhaps starting pitching.
  • The Marlins’ top priority is improving their defense.
  • Dave Cameron takes apart Scott Boras’ claim about Oliver Perez.  If more of these client books leak out, Boras is going to have to hire Cameron to keep him quiet.
  • White Sox GM Ken Williams talked about adding speed from within, though Williams is notoriously unpredictable.
  • Two 19 year-old Indian men named Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel will try out in front of Major League scouts today after winning the Million Dollar Arm contest.  The idea of the contest was to find raw talent among India’s huge population, kids who could hit 85mph consistently.  The Red Sox and Indians are among the clubs in attendance.
  • The Phillies may be interested in Junichi Tazawa, though Ruben Amaro’s "We know of him" comment isn’t exactly an endorsement.  The Indians, Yankees, and D’Backs will pass on Tazawa, who could command $7MM.
  • Also at NPB Tracker, a second Japanese club hopes to convince the Rangers to trade Nelson Cruz.  Doesn’t make much sense for Texas.
  • Amaro is figuring out his front office; Chuck LaMar has been promoted to assistant GM.
  • Chris De Luca’s sources close to Bud Selig say there’s "zero chance" Bud and the owners let Mark Cuban buy the Cubs.
  • Baseball America has the full list of 561 minor league free agents.  See anyone you like?
  • Former Dodgers GM Fred Claire looks at the notable waiver claims of the past few years.
  • Baseball Prospectus’ John Perrotto says the Twins are reportedly willing to trade Delmon Young to the Padres for Kevin Kouzmanoff.

Phils, Cards Battle For Holliday

By Tim Dierkes | November 7, 2008 at 9:20am CDT

According to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post, the Phillies and Cardinals are the top suitors for Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday.

The Phillies discussed Holliday and Brian Fuentes with the Rockies during the season.  The Rockies have an eye on Carlos Carrasco, J.A. Happ, and Shane Victorino.  Todd Zolecki believes Jayson Werth could be in the mix.

The Cardinals have been aggressive, and Ryan Ludwick is their bargaining chip.  Joe Strauss says the Cardinals would like to try to sign Holliday to an extension, but may not have the leverage to require a window.  The Cards would like to get something done soon.  Ludwick alone seems a pretty solid return for Holliday, since the Rockies would have him for three years.  Strauss adds that the Mets are also in the running for Holliday.

Phillies Rumors: Baldelli, Hairston, Mench

By Tim Dierkes | November 6, 2008 at 5:48pm CDT

5:44pm: MLB.com’s Ken Mandel says the Phillies have Rocco Baldelli, Jerry Hairston Jr., and Kevin Mench on the radar in the event they don’t re-sign Burrell.  The Phillies have long liked Baldelli, though the Rays hope to talk contract soon.  Reds GM Walt Jocketty recently met with Hairston’s agent, and feels he made progress.  And the Hanshin Tigers hope to lure Mench to Japan.

9:38am: Checkin’ in on the Phillies…

  • GM Ruben Amaro Jr. had an informal five-minute talk with Casey Close, who represents Ryan Howard and Joe Blanton.
  • Talks have not yet begun with free agents Pat Burrell, Jamie Moyer, and Scott Eyre.  Conversations will begin soon with Moyer and Eyre.
  • Curt Schilling would be open to returning to the Phillies if he pitches next year.  Amaro says he hasn’t even considered the possibility yet.  He would make a nice fifth starter if they can re-sign Moyer.
  • The Phillies control setup man Ryan Madson through 2009, but he’s represented by Scott Boras.  Boras compared Madson to Mariano Rivera circa 1996, so don’t look for an affordable long-term deal.
  • Amaro talked to at least 27 other GMs at the meetings.
  • No word yet from the Philly writers on Andrew Baggarly’s rumor that the Phils will listen on Jimmy Rollins.

Matt Holliday Rumors: Thursday

By Tim Dierkes | November 6, 2008 at 5:10pm CDT

5:10pm: Joe Strauss says the Cards are in on Holliday; Ryan Ludwick could be part of the package.  Strauss says the Cardinals would have interest in signing Holliday to an extension.  Tracy Ringolsby says the Cardinals have taken an aggressive approach, and also mentions Ludwick.  He adds that GM John Mozeliak would need ownership approval to acquire Holliday.

4:53pm: The latest on Matt Holliday: SI.com’s Jon Heyman says the Phillies are the most aggressive suitor.  The Phils do have the goods to get it done, especially with the suggestion this morning that the Rockies might be willing to take a bit less.

Meanwhile, Troy E. Renck continues to suggest the Phillies and A’s are the most likely suitors for Holliday.  He reiterates that the Rockies are open-minded on the return.

Rockies Rumors: Holliday, Taveras, Atkins

By Tim Dierkes | November 6, 2008 at 4:54pm CDT

4:54pm: More Rockies chatter from Troy Renck.  The Rockies intend to sort out the Holliday/Atkins trade situations before moving on to other concerns such as the bullpen.  They do like the idea of bringing Jeremy Affeldt back, though.  Renck has the Twins and Indians kicking the tires on Atkins, while Tracy Ringolsby believes Michael Cuddyer could be a fit for Colorado.

11:18am: The latest Rockies buzz…

  • Buster Olney says the Rockies are very motivated to move Matt Holliday.  Olney wonders if the Rox might end up taking a bit less than expected for him.  Troy Renck says various execs see the A’s and Phillies as the most likely matches for Holliday.  The Rays are another possibility.  GM Dan O’Dowd will be open-minded about the return.
  • Renck also says the White Sox have contacted the Rockies about Willy Taveras.
  • Renck talked to the agent for Doug Brocail, Brandon Lyon, and Kyle Farnsworth.  All three are open to pitching in Colorado.
  • Tracy Ringolsby says the Rockies have had "initial talks" with the Twins regarding Garrett Atkins.  He wonders if the Angels could jump in later.
  • Ringolsby suggests Brad Penny would be an interesting candidate for the Rockies.

More Odds And Ends: Padres, Francoeur, Manny, Phillies

By Cork Gaines | November 6, 2008 at 4:28pm CDT

A few more notes from the MLBiverse…

  • Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune is reporting that the Padres have not set their ’09 payroll but that it could be as low as $40MM. Krasovic also notes that the Braves are not one of the teams that have inquired about Khalil Greene. Also, Kevin Towers continues to sound positive about the possibility of resigning Trevor Hoffman. The Padres have offered Hoffman a one-year deal for $4MM with a ’10 option at the same price.
  • Paul DePodesta comments about all of the rumors that are swirling on his personal blog.
  • We have heard this before, but now a Braves official is saying there have been no recent discussions involving Jeff Francoeur.
  • Jayson Stark discusses why a six-year deal for Manny Ramirez makes little sense.
  • Ken Mandel takes a closer look at the Phillies’ contract commitments and what they mean for the ’09 roster.

Cork Gaines writes for RaysIndex.com and can be reached here.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Furcal, Bradley, Greinke

By Tim Dierkes | November 6, 2008 at 8:31am CDT

Another day, another Ken Rosenthal column.

  • The A’s have payroll flexibility, and are expressing "strong interest" in free agent shortstop Rafael Furcal.  Bobby Crosby is set to earn $5.25MM in ’09, but it makes sense to upgrade.
  • Contrary to previous reports, Rosenthal says the Tigers are not in on Furcal.  They’ll also pass on Francisco Rodriguez, which was expected.
  • Rosenthal discusses possible fits for Milton Bradley, including the Rays, Rangers, Blue Jays, Mets, Cardinals, and Phillies.  It will be hard to overlook the health risk and give Bradley a three-year deal, especially for an NL club.
  • Rosenthal confirms interest in Khalil Greene from the Orioles and Reds.  The Blue Jays and Tigers have also been mentioned.
  • There’s no way the Phillies can afford Manny Ramirez; a look at their ’09 commitments makes that clear.
  • The Royals hope to sign Zack Greinke and Alex Gordon to long-term extensions.  Rosenthal feels trade discussions could pick up for Greinke if the Royals can’t sign him.  Keith Law said the same yesterday.
  • The Padres will exercise Brian Giles’ $9MM option in the next day or two.
