Angel Martinez

Guardians Option Juan Brito

The Guardians optioned second baseman Juan Brito and outfielders Angel Martínez and Johnathan Rodríguez to Triple-A Columbus. It’s most notable regarding Brito, who entered camp with a good chance to secure the second base job.

Cleveland created a hole at the position when they dealt Andrés Giménez to Toronto to offload the nearly $100MM remaining on his contract. Last year’s first overall pick Travis Bazzana is the expected long-term answer. He hasn’t gotten beyond High-A, so he’s unlikely to be a factor before the second half at the earliest.

The 23-year-old Brito was a much more realistic candidate to break camp. He’s been on the 40-man roster since the Guardians swapped Nolan Jones to Colorado to acquire him during the 2022-23 offseason. Brito spent all of last season on optional assignment to Triple-A Columbus. He hit .256/.365/.443 with a robust 13.5% walk rate against a modest 16.1% strikeout percentage. He popped 21 homers and stole 13 bases.

Brito doesn’t have huge physical tools, but the well-rounded offensive profile and ability to play in the middle of the diamond landed him among the league’s Top 100 prospects at FanGraphs. The switch-hitter had a bizarre Spring Training. He hit four home runs in 39 trips to the plate, but those accounted for all but three of his total hits. He hit .189 with a .231 on-base percentage that wasn’t enough to grab an Opening Day job.

The Guardians will seemingly go with a combination of Tyler Freeman, Daniel Schneemann and potentially Gabriel Arias at the keystone. The righty-hitting Freeman owns a modest .223/.304/.329 slash in parts of three seasons, but he’s been on fire this spring (.278/.381/.583 in 14 games). Schneemann, a lefty bat, hit .218/.303/.368 in 73 games as a 27-year-old rookie last season. He’s also had a big showing in camp (.265/.342/.559 over 14 contests). Schneemann has moved all around the infield and outfield and only logged 59 innings at second base between Triple-A and the majors last year.

Arias is out of options and needs to make the team or be exposed to waivers. The 25-year-old utilityman has hit a couple homers this spring but has only a .275 OBP in 15 games. His plate discipline has been a major problem over his three big league seasons. He’s a .212/.274/.350 hitter with a 32.3% strikeout rate over 563 plate appearances.

Guardians Add Pedro Avila To ALCS Roster

The Guardians set their roster for their ALCS showdown with the Yankees and announced only one change from their ALDS roster: infielder/outfielder Angel Martinez has been swapped out for right-handed reliever Pedro Avila.

Martinez, 22, was a mid-series addition to the ALDS roster, taking the place of Tyler Freeman after he suffered a left oblique strain. Freeman didn’t get into a game during the Division Series but sustained the injury during a simulated game ramping up for that round of play. Martinez took his spot on the roster but only wound up tallying one plate appearance. With the Guards now facing down a best-of-seven series, they’ll opt for an additional arm in the bullpen rather than a switch-hitting utilityman off the bench.

Avila, 27, was acquired from the Padres in exchange for cash back in April after San Diego had designated him for assignment. He went on to play a major role as a multi-inning option out of Stephen Vogt’s bullpen, appearing in 50 games and tallying 74 2/3 innings with Cleveland. Along the way, he pitched to a 3.25 ERA, fanned 23% of his opponents, issued walks at a 9.4% clip and kept 43.1% of his opponents’ batted balls on the ground.

Avila was primarily used in lower-leverage spots and will presumably work in a similar capacity if called upon in the ALCS. He had several appearances spanning more than one frame in 2024, topping out with a handful of three-inning outings.

The ALCS will kick off tonight in New York at 7:38pm ET, when the Guards send veteran righty Alex Cobb to the mound against Yankees left-hander Carlos Rodon. Neither has fared particularly well in the postseason thus far. Game 2 will feature a battle of staff aces when Cleveland sends young Tanner Bibee to the mound against 2023 Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole. The Yankees will send Clarke Schmidt to the mound in Game 3 on Thursday. The Guardians have not yet announced a starter in Game 3. Matthew Boyd and Gavin Williams are the only two other starters on the roster.

Angel Martínez Replaces Tyler Freeman On Guardians Postseason Roster

The Guardians announced a roster move ahead of Game 2 of the ALDS this afternoon: Angel Martínez will sub in for Tyler Freeman, who has been removed from the roster after suffering a left oblique strain. According to Mandy Bell of MLB.com, Freeman hurt his oblique while playing in a simulated game. Major League Baseball has already approved the substitution.

Freeman, 25, appeared in 118 games for the Guardians this season. A converted infielder, her saw most of his playing time in center field but also took reps at second base, third base, shortstop, and DH. In addition, he was a regular pinch-hitter and pinch-runner for manager Stephen Vogt. While he wasn’t particularly productive in any aspect of the game, his speed, contact skills, and defensive versatility helped him earn playing time throughout the year. However, he did not appear in Game 1 of the ALDS, and he is now ineligible to return until the World Series, should Cleveland advance that far.

Martínez, 22, made his big league debut in June but struggled to stick on the Guardians’ roster. However, he hit well in 55 games at Triple-A this year, producing an .812 OPS and 111 wRC+. Indeed, he was so red-hot at Triple-A to start September (182 wRC+ in 10 games) that he bumped Freeman off the active roster. Unfortunately for Martínez, he just could not find the same success against MLB pitching, going 9-for-41 (.220) with a .517 OPS and a 51 wRC+ over 12 games after his latest promotion. That likely explains why the Guardians went back to Freeman in favor of Martínez on the ALDS roster in the first place. With Freeman on the shelf, Cleveland will turn back to Martínez to fill the role of the athletic backup outfielder/pinch-runner/utility man off the bench.

Guardians Recall Angel Martínez For MLB Debut

The Guardians announced that infielder Gabriel Arias has been placed on the family medical emergency list. In a corresponding move, the club has recalled infielder Angel Martínez, who will be making his major league debut as soon as he gets into a game.

Martínez, 22, has been a notable prospect in the club’s system for some time. Baseball America ranked him as one of the top 30 prospects in the organization back in 2020 and each year since. In 2022, he hit .278/.378/.471 between High-A and Double-A for a 135 wRC+ while also stealing 12 bases.

The Guards selected him to their 40-man roster after that season, in order to prevent him from being selected in the Rule 5 draft. He had a down year in 2023, slashing .251/.321/.394 between Double-A and Triple-A for a 92 wRC+. This season then got off to a rocky start, as he began the year on the injured list due to a right foot contusion and then suffered a left hamate fracture. He was reinstated from the IL at the end of May.

Despite the injury setbacks, he’s been in good form this year. He has taken 74 trips to the plate with Triple-A Columbus, walking more than he has struck out and hitting three home runs. His current batting line at that level is .333/.438/.550 this year.

Martínez has primarily played the three infield positions to the left of first base, with a brief showing in center field as well. The Guardians have José Ramírez, Andrés Giménez and Brayan Rocchio getting regular playing time at those infield spots with Daniel Schneemann bouncing around to multiple spots and Tyler Freeman getting semi-regular work in center. Arias has been serving in a bench role that Martínez should jump into.

Guardians Reinstate, Option Angel Martínez

The Guardians announced today that infielder Angel Martínez has been activated from the 60-day injured list and optioned to Triple-A Columbus. Cleveland had an open 40-man spot but that roster is once again at capacity after this move.

Martínez, 22, began the season on the injured list due to a right foot contusion but later transferred him to the 60-day IL, with his injury listed as a left hamate fracture. He still hasn’t made his major league debut but this stint on the IL did allow him to pick up roughly two months of MLB service time.

He was initially added to Cleveland’s 40-man roster in November of 2022, to keep him out of that year’s Rule 5 draft. He was coming off a season in which he hit .278/.378/.471 in the minors for a 135 wRC+. His offense dipped a bit last year, as he hit .251/.321/.394 between Double-A and Triple-A for a 92 wRC+.

The Guards have had an open 40-man spot since designating Ramón Laureano for assignment last week, which is why no corresponding move was required today. Martínez will try to earn his major league debut by getting regular action in Columbus. He can be kept on optional assignment for the rest of this year and one more season as well.

Guardians Notes: McKenzie, Lively, Curry, Martinez

Triston McKenzie has had a rough start to the season, allowing 11 runs over his first 13 innings. The lanky righty has issued 12 walks with just five strikeouts. His swinging strike rate has plummeted to 5.6% while his velocity has backed up. McKenzie’s average fastball has sat at 90.9 MPH, down from its standard 92-93 range.

McKenzie entered the season hoping for a rebound after his 2023 campaign was mostly lost to injury. He began last year on the shelf with a teres major strain in his throwing shoulder. He returned in June, made two starts, and then was shut back down after spraining the UCL in his throwing elbow. That initially led to concern that he might go under the knife, but he opted for non-surgical rehab. McKenzie made it back for a pair of appearances in the final week of the season.

While he was able to get back to the mound, McKenzie clearly hasn’t been operating at peak form. The 26-year-old candidly admitted to Zack Meisel and Jason Lloyd of the Athletic that he’s still unsure whether his decision not to undergo surgery was the correct one. McKenzie told The Athletic that he’s not pitching through pain but conceded the possibility of a serious injury is “always in the back of (his) head.” While he said that hasn’t changed his approach or effort level on the mound, he clearly hasn’t found his best stuff.

Meisel’s and Lloyd’s piece is worth a full perusal, as they also speak with former Cleveland reliever Bryan Shaw and Guards starter Shane Bieber about the health and contractual considerations a player weighs when deciding whether to undergo surgery. Bieber, of course, opted for non-surgical rehab for elbow inflammation last season. After two excellent starts this year, he required Tommy John surgery — a brutal development six months before his first trip to free agency. McKenzie has three seasons of remaining arbitration control and won’t get to the open market until the 2026-27 offseason.

Bieber’s absence makes it all the more significant that McKenzie is able to get back on track in short order. The Guardians have also been without Gavin Williams thus far after the second-year righty experienced elbow discomfort of his own this spring. McKenzie has been joined Logan Allen, Tanner Bibee and Carlos Carrasco in the rotation. Of that quartet, only Carrasco has an ERA below 4.82 so far.

The Guardians have nevertheless gotten out to a great start behind an excellent bullpen and a surprisingly potent offense. They enter today’s series finale against the Red Sox with a 12-6 record. Still, the rotation will feel tenuous — at least until Williams’ return — if McKenzie’s struggles continue.

In the short term, it seems journeyman righty Ben Lively will hold down the #5 spot. He somewhat surprisingly landed a major league contract from Cleveland after being waived by the Reds last winter. Lively started the season on the IL after being delayed by an illness, but he was activated for his team debut last night. The 32-year-old worked five innings of two-run ball with seven strikeouts in a loss to Boston.

Lively is out of options, so the Guardians need to keep him on the big league club or put him on waivers. That perhaps gave him the edge over Xzavion Curry, who was optioned back to Triple-A Columbus as the corresponding move for Lively’s reinstatement. Curry had returned from his own virus-related IL stint to make his season debut on Monday. He worked five scoreless frames with a trio of strikeouts and could be the top depth option if anyone from the current rotation suffers an injury.

In other Guardians news, the team placed infield prospect Angel Martínez on the 60-day injured list yesterday. According to the MLB.com injury tracker, Martínez is undergoing surgery to repair a hamate fracture in his wrist. The 22-year-old has yet to make his MLB debut. He split last season between the top two levels of the minors, hitting .251/.321/.392 with 14 homers.

Guardians Acquire Pedro Avila

April 17: The teams announced that Avila has been traded from San Diego to Cleveland in exchange for cash. In a corresponding 40-man move, the Guards transferred infielder Angel Martinez from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list.

April 16: The Guardians are acquiring right-hander Pedro Avila from the Padres, reports Daniel Álvarez-Montes of El Extrabase (on X). San Diego had designated Avila for assignment last week.

Avila has had a tough start to the 2024 campaign. The Venezuelan-born pitcher has allowed eight runs in as many innings over his first four appearances. Avila has fanned nine but issued six walks and tossed three wild pitches. Inconsistent command has been an issue throughout the 27-year-old’s big league tenure. Avila has walked nearly 12% of batters faced over his 71 2/3 career innings.

While he has yet to find sustained success, Avila has shown the ability to miss bats at the highest level. He has punched out nearly a quarter of opponents in his career behind a solid 11.7% swinging strike rate. Avila’s fastball velocity is more solid than standout (typically 93-94 MPH) but his changeup has been a reliably excellent swing-and-miss offering.

Avila has come out of the bullpen for 14 of his 22 major league outings. He’s been a starter in the minors, although his recent rotation work was not effective. He was tagged for an unsightly 8.57 ERA over 19 appearances (15 of them starts) in the Pacific Coast League last season. That pushed his career Triple-A earned run average to 5.59 in 190 innings. Avila has a solid 23.2% strikeout rate at that level, where he has handed out free passes at a lofty 11.2% clip.

Since he’s out of options, Avila can’t be sent to the minors without going through waivers. The Guardians figure to give him a look in the MLB bullpen as a long reliever. Cleveland has a fair bit of roster flexibility in that regard. Of their current middle innings group, only Tyler Beede can’t be optioned.

Despite their inexperience, the Guards’ bullpen has been excellent in the early going. They went into play Wednesday with an MLB-best 1.76 ERA and the league’s fourth-highest strikeout rate (27.6%). Cleveland has a full 40-man roster and will need to make a corresponding move once Avila’s acquisition is finalized.

Guardians Release Kirk McCarty

NOVEMBER 17: McCarty has been released, according to the transactions log at MLB.com.

NOVEMBER 15: The Guardians announced a series of roster moves in setting their 40-man roster in advance of next month’s Rule 5 Draft. In addition to tonight’s pair of trades — Nolan Jones to the Rockies; Carlos Vargas to the D-backs — Cleveland has designated lefties Anthony Gose and Kirk McCarty for assignment. The series of subtractions from the 40-man paves the way for the Guardians to select the contracts of infielder Angel Martinez and lefties Joey Cantillo and Tim Herrin. Cleveland also selected infielder Juan Brito, whom they acquired from Colorado in exchange for Jones. The team’s 40-man roster is at capacity.

It’s been quite the year for McCarty, from a transactions standpoint. Originally called to the Majors as a Covid replacement in April, McCarty was returned to the minors shortly thereafter but formally selected to the 40-man roster the following month. Cleveland designated him for assignment on July 3, after which he was claimed by the Orioles, who designated him for assignment just nine days later and lost him on waivers… back to the Guardians. Beyond that series of moves, McCarty was optioned to the minors on four separate occasions over the course of his roller coaster season.

The 27-year-old McCarty generated decent but unspectacular results at the big league level in his his rookie effort this year, logging a 4.54 ERA in 37 2/3 frames. His 16.4% strikeout rate was well below average, but he turned in a respectable 8.2% walk rate. McCarty has well above-average spin on his fastball and curveball, but he doesn’t throw especially hard or miss many bats, and the 2.63 HR/9 he yielded this season is an obvious red flag. He was solid in Triple-A (3.52 ERA in 65 1/3 innings) and does have multiple minor league option years remaining, so another club in need of some left-handed depth could conceivably take a look.

Gose, 32, was one of baseball’s feel-good stories in recent years. Originally a second-round pick and top prospect as an outfielder, his career stalled out after he was unable to produce much at the plate in the Majors or in the upper minors. Gose, a two-way star in high school who some scouts preferred as a pitcher in the draft, got back on the mound in A-ball as a 26-year-old in 2017 and, after taking several years to refine his command and learn to control his blazing fastball, finally made it back to the big leagues in 2021.

Gose didn’t just return to the Majors last year, though. He tossed 6 2/3 innings out of the Cleveland bullpen and allowed just a run on two hits and two walks with nine strikeouts and a heater that averaged 99.2 mph. It was a small sample, of course, but Gose stormed out of the gates in 2022 with 20 1/3 innings of 3.10 ERA ball and a 31.4% strikeout rate. Walks looked like an issue (14%), but by that point Gose’s big league pitching career consisted of 27 innings of 3.00 ERA ball with 36 strikeouts.

The Yankees pounced on Gose for four runs in his next outing, however, after which he landed on the injured list. The Guardians initially characterized the move as one made out of necessity with a doubleheader looming, but Gose’s absence proved protracted, and more than two months after he was shelved, the team announced Gose had undergone Tommy John surgery. The Sept. 14 date of the procedure all but formally rules Gose out for the 2023 campaign, so it’s no surprise to see the Guardians open his roster spot in this fashion.

Joining the Guardians’ 40-man roster are two of their top 30 prospects — Martinez and Cantillo — as well as a lefty reliever (Herrin) who posted eye-popping numbers in Double-A. Baseball America ranks Martinez 12th in Cleveland’s system and Cantillo 15th. Martinez hit .278/.378/.471 as a 20-year-old between High-A and Double-A this season. Cantillo was limited to just 60 2/3 innings by a shoulder strain this season but made 14 appearances (13 starts) with a 1.93 ERA and 35.5% strikeout rate. Herrin, 26, turned in a 2.01 ERA and 41.6% strikeout rate in 22 1/3 Double-A innings before being bumped to Triple-A, where he recorded a 4.98 ERA and “just” a 30.9% strikeout rate in 47 frames.
