Nationals Designate Juan Yepez For Assignment

By Darragh McDonald | June 16, 2025 at 1:25pm CDT

The Nationals announced a series of roster moves today. Outfielder Robert Hassell III and infielder José Tena have been optioned to Triple-A Rochester. Outfielder Daylen Lile has been recalled while third baseman Brady House has had his contract selected. Those four moves were reported yesterday. To open a 40-man spot for House, the Nats designated first baseman Juan Yepez for assignment.

Yepez, 27, first joined the Nationals via a minor league deal going into the 2024 season. He got added to the club’s roster in July and got fairly regular playing time in the second half of last year. He slashed .283/.335/.429 for a 113 wRC+ in 249 plate appearances.

Coming into 2025, the Nats made a couple of additions to the first base/designated hitter mix, acquiring Nathaniel Lowe from the Rangers and also signing free agent Josh Bell. Those moves pushed Yepez down the depth chart and he was optioned to Rochester to start the year. He has since appeared in 45 games for the Red Wings with a .199/.273/.301 line and 56 wRC+. He hasn’t been helped by a .212 batting average on balls in play but he also has only three home runs.

Yepez has some experience at other positions but is mostly just a first baseman. He hasn’t played third base since 2022 and his work in the outfield corners has been very limited. He’s not really a threat on the basepaths either. In short, he needs to hit. The fact that he hasn’t done so this year has hurt his value and bumped him off Washington’s roster. He’s also in his final option year, so he’s down to a few months where he can be easily sent to the minors.

He’s now in DFA limbo, which can last as long as a week. The waiver process takes 48 hours, so the Nats could take five days to explore trades. He’s been a roughly average big league hitter in 588 plate appearances between the Cardinals and Nationals but this year’s struggles on the farm will naturally tamp down interest.

If he is passed through outright waivers unclaimed, he will stick with the club as depth without taking up a roster spot. He won’t have the right to elect free agency since he has less than three years of service time and hasn’t been previously outrighted in his career.

Nationals To Promote Brady House

By Nick Deeds | June 15, 2025 at 5:29pm CDT

The Nationals optioned outfielder Robert Hassell III and infielder Jose Tena to Triple-A after today’s game, per a club announcement. The corresponding moves for those transactions have not yet been formally announced, but Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports that the club plans to select the contract of top infield prospect Brady House and recall outfielder Daylen Lile.

House, 22, was drafted 11th overall by the Nats in 2021 and was a consensus top-100 prospect in the sport as recently as last season. The third baseman enjoyed a breakout season in 2023, when he rocketed from Single-A to Double-A over the course of a single campaign and slashed .312/.365/.497 with 12 homers and nine steals in just 88 games. That 20/20 potential combined with solid defense at the hot corner was enough to send House soaring up to prospect boards in spite of his low walk rate and 23.9% strikeout rate, but a disappointing 2024 campaign was enough to quell the excitement regarding the infielder’s future. In a return to Double-A last year, he hit a somewhat middling .234/.310/.423 in 75 games before being promoted to Triple-A.

House’s first taste of the highest level of the minors knocked him for a loop with a .250/.280/.375 line in 54 games, but he returned to the level better equipped in 2025. This year, he’s looked excellent at the plate for Triple-A Rochester with a .301/.349/.516 (126 wRC+) line in 64 games with 14 doubles, 13 homers, and a triple in that time. That’s exciting power from a strong defender at third base, though that high batting average should not be expected to transfer over to the majors. House has long been criticized by scouts for his hit tool, and he’s benefited from a .376 BABIP so far with Rochester that’s unlikely to be sustainable. Between that high BABIP and a 27.0% strikeout rate, House could struggle to get on base with regularity in the majors but figures to make up for that with above-average pop and an impressive glove.

House’s promotion to the majors completes the Nationals’ infield after the club opted to leave the position to part-time options like Amed Rosario, Paul DeJong, and Tena throughout the first few months of the season as they awaited House’s eventual promotion. DeJong appeared in just 16 games before being sidelined by injury, but Tena and Rosario have formed a roughly league average platoon at the hot corner to this point in the year. Tena is headed to Triple-A for the time being but has been a very pleasant surprise for the Nationals since he was acquired from Cleveland last year. He’s hit a nearly league average .261/.312/.364 across 84 games in a Nationals uniform, and his positional versatility and left-handed bat should make him a valuable bench piece and depth starter for the team going forward.

Joining Tena in packing his bags for Rochester is Hassell, a former top-100 prospect who made his MLB debut just last month. Hassell has hit a paltry .230/.240/.284 (44 wRC+) in 20 games with the Nationals since being called up to the majors, and his departure should allow Jacob Young and his top-of-the-scale defense in center field to reclaim a larger role on the team going forward. Young will be backed up in the outfield by Lile, who went 6-for-31 at the plate with three doubles, two walks, and a triple when he made his big league debut in an 11-game cup of coffee earlier this year. The left-handed Lile figures to serve as a complement to the righty-swinging Young in center field, at least until Dylan Crews returns from the injured list.

Nationals Release Zach Davies, Reassign Several Top Prospects To Minor League Camp

By Steve Adams | March 22, 2024 at 3:00pm CDT

The Nationals announced Friday that they’ve released veteran right-hander Zach Davies, who’d been in camp on a minor league contract. Washington also reassigned veteran lefty Richard Bleier, first baseman Juan Yepez, and top prospects James Wood, Brady House, Dylan Crews and Robert Hassell III to minor league camp. Bleier and Yepez, like Davies, were in camp on non-roster deals with spring invites.

Davies, 31, was signed to provide some depth to a thin rotation but was rocked for 14 runs in 14 innings this spring. Opposing hitters connected on 20 hits, including a pair of homers, and Davies issued seven free passes while plunking another batter. To his credit, he fanned 17 of his 69 opponents — a 24.6% clip that’s far north of his career average — but it wasn’t a strong all around impression. He’ll look to latch on with another club in need of some depth.

From 2022-23, Davies was in the D-backs’ rotation. He was a solid back-end arm in 2022, logging 134 1/3 frames of 4.09 ERA ball, albeit with worse-than-average strikeout and walk rates alike. He was torched for a 7.00 ERA in 82 1/3 innings last year, missing time with back and oblique injuries along the way. Davies has never had good strikeout numbers, fanning just 17.5% of his career opponents, but he’s typically had solid command (8.1% walk rate) and a slightly above-average ground-ball rate (44.9%). It’s not the flashiest skill set, but Davies has regularly dodged hard contact and managed to post a career 4.36 ERA in 1048 1/3 innings despite averaging under 90 mph on his fastball.

Also not making the cut are veterans Bleier and Yepez. Bleier, soon to turn 37, had a big spring with just two runs allowed on eight hits and no walks with nine strikeouts through 10 2/3 innings. The soft-tossing lefty is looking to bounce back from last year’s 5.28 ERA in Boston. From 2020-22, he turned in 125 1/3 innings of 3.09 ERA ball with well below-average strikeout rates but elite command and ground-ball tendencies.

The 26-year-old Yepez came to Nationals camp hoping to win a spot in the team’s first base/left field/designated hitter mix. Like Bleier, he’s performed well, hitting .387/.424/.581 with a couple homers in 33 trips to the plate. Yepez didn’t hit much in parts of two seasons with the Cardinals (.240/.286/.419, 97 wRC+) — especially considering his lack of speed and defensive value. However, he has a nice track record in Triple-A, where he’s slashed .279/.349/.515 in 948 plate appearances.

Of the top prospects optioned today, Wood had the best chance of making the roster, though even that was likely only an outside shot. The 21-year-old slugger was one of the centerpieces of Washington’s Juan Soto return from the Padres (along with Hassell) and did his best to force the issue this spring, slashing .341/.491/.707 with four homers. Despite that borderline comical offensive output, Wood has yet to play in Triple-A and only has 87 games above  A-ball. He’ll head to the upper minors for some more refinement, but he’s one of the game’s top-ranked prospects and will have a real chance to make his MLB debut in 2024.

Nationals Sign First-Rounder Brady House

By TC Zencka | July 31, 2021 at 7:40am CDT

As reported yesterday, the Nationals signed first-round pick Brady House. His deal is worth $5MM, per Jon Heyman of the MLB Network (via Twitter). The slot value for the 11th overall selection is $4.55MM.

House’s signing represents a bit of good news for Nats fans amid their sell-off yesterday. The high school shortstop was long considered one of the top prospects in the draft, but he ended up slipping to the Nats at number 11, largely because of signing concerns. Many of the small market teams picking ahead of the Nationals went with draft picks they could sign to below-slot deals.

The Athletic’s Keith Law ranked House as the 11th best prospect in the class, but he was the low man. ESPN had him as high as sixth on their draft board, Fangraphs at ninth, and Baseball America at seventh. The Nats represented a potential floor, then, at number 11 where they got him.

House brings a big bat, but there are some concerns about his hit tool, and most expect him to eventually move to third base. Still, his ceiling is tremendous, and for the Nats, he represents good value.

The Nats farm system looks much more robust today than it did yesterday with House joining trade acquisitions like Keibert Ruiz and Josiah Gray. Prior to those acquisitions, House was probably going to be near the very top of the Nats’ prospect chart. Now, he’ll slot in further down, but he’ll still be a top-ten prospect from the jump.

House represents a class of his own in some ways, however, as most of the prospects the Nationals targets should be in the big leagues within the next year or two. House’s timeline is probably further out than that. High school prep athletes tend closer to the three-to-five-year development path.

Draft Signings: 7/30/21

By Darragh McDonald | July 30, 2021 at 9:33pm CDT

Today’s most notable signings from last week’s amateur draft.  As always, you can get more background on these players via the prospect rankings and scouting reports compiled by Baseball America, Fangraphs, MLB Pipeline, The Athletic’s Keith Law, and ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel.  As well, here is MLB Pipeline’s breakdown of the slot values assigned to each pick in the first 10 rounds, as well as the bonus pool money available to all 30 teams.

  • The Diamondbacks signed first-round selection Jordan Lawlar, according to Jim Callis of MLB Pipeline. Lawlar will receive almost $1MM above slot value. As Callis notes, this was the highest number the team could give without exceeding their bonus pool.
  • Marlins have also signed their first-round selection Kahlil Watson, pending a physical. Callis expects Watson to get well above slot, similar to Lawlar.
  • The Nationals have also signed their first-round pick Brady House, according to a team announcement. Terms were not disclosed. But the slot value is $4.55MM.
  • The Red Sox have signed fifth-round pick Nathan Hickey, $1MM on a slot of $410k. As noted by Callis, this is the highest bonus given to any player in rounds 4 through 10 so far this year.

2021 MLB Draft, Day One Results

By Mark Polishuk | July 11, 2021 at 7:52pm CDT

The 2021 MLB Draft is underway, and we’ll be keeping track of tonight’s picks as they’re announced.  The draft will get underway this evening with the first 36 picks — the first round proper, the compensatory round (which consists of just one pick, the Reds’ extra selection granted when Trevor Bauer rejected their qualifying offer last winter and signed with the Dodgers for more than $50MM), and then Competitive Balance Round A.

Rounds 2-10 (plus the included compensation picks and Competitive Balance Round B) will take place on Monday afternoon, and then rounds 11-20 will take place Tuesday afternoon.  This year’s draft is to 20 rounds from five rounds in 2020, and the current expectation is that the 2022 draft will return to its old 40-round format, though the draft structure will be one of many topics under discussion when the league and the players’ union negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement this winter.
